God of War enjoyed a semi-decent opening in Japan, moving roughly 46,000 copies and landing in second place. We weren't expecting it to do crazy numbers, but we perhaps thought that it would get a little closer to 100,000. It was beaten out by the newly released Nintendo Labo Variety Kit, which isn't a huge surprise.
Things remain dire on the hardware front, with PlayStation 4 numbers down in the dumps. Apparently, stock shortages may play a part here, and that seems probable given that the PS4 Pro actually outsold the standard model.

Are people really buying cardboard over God of War?
meh...japanese market is totally on its own....
Worth remembering that this is physical sales only. God of War probably does end up close to 100k if digital's included. Still nothing amazing, but respectable.
God of Labo.
Labo is great. God of War is great.
Weird, no article at NintendoLife. I noticed they are very selective when publishing an article about japanese sales.
Correction: i saw it. I just questioned myself how can they give a positive spin to it. But ofcourse they had to give a jab at God of war
@redd214 Do you recommend it? My gf is interested but i think it is very expensive
Cardboard > Kratos
This is shaping up to be a fun thread. We've replaced "port begging" with "waa waa but digital". 😉
Edit - Pro probably beat Slim b/c GoW was bundled with Pro. That Slim number was low though. It's too soon for them to drop it unless "Super Slimmerer" is coming soon. It might be due, right time of year.
@Sanquine um no? they publish one every week. they just usually take a little longer than this site.
@rjejr Best get to banning.
In allnseriousness the fact charts dont include digital is frankly asinine in this day and age.
@manu0 Every Week? I noticed them missing with the release of monster hunter world. I could be wrong ofcourse:)
@Sanquine you noticed one week miss and suddenly they're "very selective"?
Kratos the best.word up son
@Tulio517 It occurs much more often for my feeling. But as i said i could be wrong ^^
Did i strike a nerve or something?
@Sanquine That's a tough one honestly. I have 2 boys, 9 and 8, who love building things/diy projects etc. Also they do learn some simple robotics/STEM/coding things in school already so for us Labo makes a TON of sense. While it is fun to build things together the included games themselves are a bit rudimentary and underwhelming to be honest. I think the real magic of labo will come from the customization and creativity that it will allow.
@redd214 Thanks:) I think this will save me some money. I was doubting whether to buy Labo or Donkey kong TF. Donky kong it is.
@Simon_Fitzgerald
Yeah Boy. Labo Toycon Garage is actually deeper and more technical than GoW in terms of gameplay judging by Twitter posts.
Anyway, is Sony slowly phasing out the standard PS4 in Japan? Not surprised.
@Sanquine no problem, happy to help!
It's almost like comparing the sales of an M-rated AAA action game to a peripheral designed primarily for children is kind of stupid, innit?
The people who have brought Labo have only done so to make a cardboard cutout of Kratos
@Simon_Fitzgerald funnily that is possible heck w the Piano someone can take a GoW theme & play it
wondering how much does god of war sold copies on launch day and now ? 3 million copies ??
Meanwhile at NL "LABO OUTSOLD GoW" and "SWITCH IS BEST SELLING CONSOLE IN MARCH" cos apparently PS4 and Pro shouldn't be counted together. I know Nintendo's fans were bad but I didn't think they were running the site too.
@porhawj2016 we dunno we know it sold well in Europe, near 50K in Japan, dunno US...
@adf86 Given PS had "PS4 is best selling console" when not counting all the 3DS SKUs together....fair game I say.
@Derpie1 yeah it likely ended up with 1 millions in Europe and probably end up with 800 k in USA
@porhawj2016 we dunno & prob won’t for a bit
You lost out to cardboard, Kratos. Go home and keep training. You are not ready.
@Simon_Fitzgerald Nice copy/paste job onto NL btw. Shame it didn't get a reaction here eh?
You're staff, I expect better.
Man vs cardboard. I guess cardboard came out on top this time.
Don’t know if I believe those stock shortages. If that is indeed true then Sony has themselves to blame. It’s not like the PS4 is selling like hot cakes in Japan.
Labo has won the battle, but we all know Kratos wins the war. He always does .
@YummyHappyPills It's our sister site, it'd be unfair to have a favourite
@Fight_Teza_Fight If there are stock shortages they've been a thing since February it seems.
@rjejr
I called it, but it's still stupid to be celebrating this. Again, Labo is an accessory for people of all ages associated with what is the hottest item in gaming right now. God of War is an M-rated game. Why anybody expects this to play out if favor of GoW is beyond me. I'll still take a well made game over $80 cardboard any day.
Most Japanese people love handhelds, it fits their lifestyle better than a console, I’m sure everyone here knows this already. there’s no way for Sony to get continuous sales figures as high as the switch except by releasing a new handheld. These sales charts don’t mean anything other than a reminder of that fact.
The jump in PS4 Pro sales is pretty interesting. It suggests that a decent chunk of the people that bought God of War, bought it as part of a bundle. Collectors? A small dedicated God of War fanbase or perhaps a lot of GOW fans simply didn't own PS4s yet? I don't know, I'm no Michael Pachter
@Pamela you say this yet MHW happened which made the PS4 sales high as heck same w DQXI.
Not to generalize and be bad...but Japan prefers games with "bad" graphics and old mechanics like Earth Defense Force, Dinasty Warriors xD But jokes aside, they don't like western games that much so it is to be expected!
@Derpie1 I said the PS4 won’t sell “continuously” better due to it not being a handheld. mhw was a temporary boost due to the game being popular over there and then the figures dropped again.
Nintendo's plan to make Japan suck again is going off without a hitch.
Are we really seeing Nintendo as competition? I've always thought they were their own thing. I loved my Gameboy and NES when I was a kid but from the wii onward it seems like they focus on first party stuff now, which they do very well.
Different audience I guess.
What I'm saying is, who cares if Labo outsold GoW? It's a totally different audience.
@adf86 ninty fans are literally the worst, it makes me ashamed to own a Switch whenever i see the constant port begging. 🙄
@YummyHappyPills 3DS isn't a console.
@Clutch_Nixon oh don’t worry loving fanboys of both companies will uh make ya eat yer words for that last part cus people care for cardboard in 2 ways
@viciousarcanum nothing is stopping you from trading it in if you’re that ashamed...
Trying to compare these two is like comparing chalk and cheese, on the one hand you've got an amazingly made, traditional game, on the other, a genius idea that's tonnes of fun (as a gamer and crafter, i especially approve of Labo).
The fact they're both doing well should be cause for celebration, but of course the fanboys (on both sides) have to make stupid comments lol
@YummyHappyPills They should include digital, I agree. 99%-100% of Switch games each week are digital only, so they don't get counted at all. And with Switch games that require a cart purchase and then a download people are going to go digital just b/c.
I know these charts aren't going to start including indies, but disc/cart games should include digital sales. Maybe next gen.
But I couldn't let that quick "oh but digital" from Shogun go.
@Gamer83 "be celebrating this"
If I came across as celebrating this I apologize. I was trying to rub the noses of the PS staff in it. I'm getting both so I don't care. I enjoy, and hate, everyone and everything equally.
Is pretty easy to predict anything handheld in Japan beating out anything console based, w/ a few exceptions such as Monster Hunter and DQ, I was more interested if these "charts" would even include Labo in the game category b/c they are almost more toy than video game. I've never seen them include amiibo sales and some of those cost $20 each. Huge Yarn Yoshi cost $50 or something nuts like that. Kratos did beat Project Giant Robot Labo quite handily so he has that going for him. (I always thought 1 $80 robot selling against a $70 5-pack was a bad idea) .
So actually Kratos vs Labo is a tie. Lost 1, beat 1.
Anyone upset about this needs to take a look at their life...
I got GoW, not getting Labo.
@Enuo No, the us is great again,trump fan.
@premko1 Don't ever call me that again.
Wario, Kirby, toad, link. Why are you in the comments for a playstation site?
Ahhh I see jealous of God of War. Now go and fly your flying boat collecting moons and jumping on turtles and let us lot crack on with the real games where we errr sail boats in a norse world talking to snakes. Hmmmm.
Actually you can stay.
@porhawj2016 I believe here in the States, it will be higher than that. I also expect pretty fantastic 2nd week sales in EU
Always amazes me how poorly Xbox sells in Japan.
I usually pay very little to no attention to the Japanese sales charts.
On a side note, how in the hell does the Xbox One and One X sell so abysmally poor? Guess the Japanese market really hates Western stuff lol. Different market, different people.
LOL, that market is totally on a different Planet. But I digress, if people prefer Cardboard, who cares? Although, it would be extremely hilarious if at The Game Awards, they selected Nintendo Labo as Game of the Year (a bit depressing too)
@rjejr
Not so much directed at you, more at what I saw over at Nintendo Life, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised. Both staffs and both comment sections at these websites are getting a bit full of the fanboy nonsense in sales articles this days. It's always been this way but it's gotten worse over the last 3 or 4 months, imo.
Anyway, I've been saying Labo will do will everywhere, not just Japan. I can see the appeal, even if it's not a product for me. I'm not sure why so many expected it to fail. When you really break it down, it is kind of overpriced cardboard but at the same time, we've seen consumers get behind stuff like Kinect (it did sell very well for the first couple years) and that thing was an interesting concept but not the most well designed and was overpriced for what was delivered.
@Simon_Fitzgerald I know, right? Someone ought to tell them that if you buy a PS4, you get a whole BOX of cardboard free with it. It'd surely fly off the shelves then.
@Gamer83 "I'm not sure why so many expected it to fail"
B/c most people on both of these websites are gamers, and it isn't for them, therefore it must fail.
And the internet.
I sort of found out what INCEL is today. Not exactly, but more than I wanted to. Makes these 2 websites seem more childish than dangerous, so that's good, right?
You playing Gow? I bought it to trade it in for Labo, supposed to be 25-30 hours, but I'm thinking more like 50 easy rate I'm going, 22% done in 10 hours. And I've only died 8 or 9 times so far, stupid Viken. But I wasn't planning on getting Labo until school was out anyway, mid-June, maybe a Father's Day sale. Not that it's a Father's Day gift but stores don't care, ti's just an excuse.
Personally I could care less if labo outsells anything, different strokes for different folks and all that. But to purposely create clickbait articles around it, in one territory, is sadly becoming the status quo at NL.
You guys are forgetting this does not include digital numbers..
