There are a lot of angry Dynasty Warriors fans out there on the internet right now. For the past few weeks, Koei Tecmo has been steadily revealing new and returning characters who are set to appear in Dynasty Warriors 9, the next game in the long-running series. However, not all of these reveals have gone down especially well.
Earlier today, the game's official website was updated with three returning characters: Sun Ce, Ma Chao, and Jia Chong. Of those three, both Sun Ce and Jia Chong -- two fan favourite warriors -- have been given new weapons. Sun Ce has lost his beloved tonfas, and Jia Chong has lost his cool throwing axes.
That may not sound like a big deal, but it certainly doesn't ease the current uproar among the dedicated Koei community. You see, clone movesets have been a sticking point in Dynasty Warriors for years. Dynasty Warriors 6 was torn to bits by some fans because many of its playable characters were given generic, rather boring movesets which weren't unique. Basically, it was a way for developer Omega Force to cut corners.
And now, the worry is that corners are being cut once again. Sun Ce's new weapon -- a kind of long blade -- is the same type of weapon that newcomer Zhou Cang uses. Likewise, Zhang He has been given throwing knives instead of his trademark claws -- the former is typically used by Wang Yuanji.
It's not hard to see why some fans are worried. Omega Force did a great job of making a massive amount of unique movesets in Dynasty Warriors 8, but it's starting to look as though all that hard work is being reversed. If we really are getting clones in Dynasty Warriors 9 -- which is due out at some point next year -- then we could be looking at a hardcore community crapstorm.

Yeah those changes are never a good thing. Yue Ying moveset from 6 is atrocious without her Scythe. The only passable change so far was Diao Chan.
Do we really need more characters that focuses more on spears, swords, and knives? Where's the creativity, Tecmo?
It's OK if the weapons are close look-alikes, as long as the move sets are different.
How many custom moves do you need to cut through 50,000 mindless AI? Seems like it all boils down to pressing two or three buttons to make combos.
@RedMageLanakyn I think that's one of the reasons you need interesting movesets, though. Warriors games get repetitive — that's inevitable by design — so deriving enjoyment from different movesets and what they're capable of is a lot of the fun. If bunches of characters play basically the same, it only kills the fun faster, if that makes sense.
@ShogunRok I guess for me the movesets never really mattered, I always looked for the combo that killed the most and did it fast. Probably part of the reason I've started to steer away from this type of game, as I started getting bored no matter what was happening on screen (although DQH2 and Hyrule Warriors were quite fun and flashy, but i don't know if they count since they're spinoffs)
