Voting for this year's Golden Joystick Awards has opened, giving us a look at the nominees for the upcoming event. Unsurprisingly, the likes of Horizon: Zero Dawn and Persona 5 are contenders for multiple awards, but what's really caught our attention is the fact that two unreleased games are up for the Ultimate Game of the Year award. Bit weird, that.
Yep, both Assassin's Creed Origins and Super Mario Odyssey have been nominated for the big one, even though neither title has actually released yet. We're not exactly sure how people are supposed to consider voting for games that they haven't played, but, er, yeah, the option's there. Good news for all you time travellers, at least.

Ok, they will be released before the end of the year...but are we that sure they are even worthy a nomination?
@Feena Yeah, that's it exactly.
Even stranger is that Dishonored 2 has been carried forward from last year into this year's vote. Why not do the same with Creed, etc?
@ShogunRok is Fire Emblem Warriors already out as well? And seriously, a Warriors game? They are fun but not really goty material...
Smells like advertising / sponsorship getting involved there... There will be a massive segment on the game, during the event or some such...
@get2sammyb FFXV was nominated as well, though I have no idea what their cut-off dates are, and well FFXV seems to release every month if you ask Squenix about FFXV Universe.
I'd vote for Zelda, but I'm not voting for anything until I play Horizon:ZD after the DLC drops.
Wishful thinking.
Can't see why Destiny 2 isn't there. It's a cracking game even the deputy leader of the labour party is harping on about. Although that might not be as great an endorsement as it sounds. Then again. if they get in there might be a tax break boost for UK based developers.
Well why not throw in God of war? This is why ppl dont take Videogame awards seriously.
Parp. Everyone knows Nier is game of the year. Second and third are still up in the air but I'll be sure to let you all know by Christmas.
Could be Resi 7 is in there.
I am voting for Death Stranding and that idea Neil Druckmann is going to have after TLOU 2.
Won't be bothered about voting but have to say Destiny 2 will be my favourite of the year! Although I don't buy every game the year it comes out tbf but I've had a few this year!
i could vote for the last guardian in just one category ;_; and no Sonic mania either.
Lucky I'm a time traveller from 2784 but unfortunately my Delorean's broken at the moment so can't check Mario/Assassin's to vote
lol, these guys are floundering and make no sense. A few goty nominees are from 2016
This year had a ton of great games and I havent even played the highest rated ones. Still have Nier, HZD and P5 on my plate and Mario hits in a month.
After the likes of No Mans Sky & ME: Andromeda, you'd think these people would have learned by now not to count their chickens.
I guess it is acceptable as they will release this year however, surely it should not be possible to cast a vote for those titles until after their release.
Lets be fair, Mario does look pretty great and may well be worthy of awards.
@Lovespuds Well, yeah. No one's saying these couldn't be nominations, it's just they shouldn't seeing as no one's played them yet.
One word: Horizon.
This just shows that GOTY awards should only be held in the first month or so of the following year, not only to allow games released at the very end of the year just as much of a chance to make their mark but it also helps to clearly define games that were actually released that year so you don't get things from the year before being added too lol
Personally i find the whole obsession/frenzy in the media to crown a GOTY to be quite tiresome and when you think what a stellar selection of games have been released this year for example, it always seems a shame that a lot of them will inevitably end up overshadowed, it's usually only the games with the biggest budgets that get considered, so indies and portable games in particular get unfairly ignored.
Either they are 'confident' the game is 'good' or that they are struggling to find enough competition for the others on the list. We are still a month away from release for AC so I don't feel I could vote for it - but it would have to be something special to beat Horizon: Zero Dawn and whilst I have it pre-ordered, I can't see it beating that.
Assassins Creed Origins and Super Mario Odyssey are sure to be great games but if they aren't out yet they shouldn't get a nomination.
The transparency of the nomination process fills me with so much faith in the validity of the results.
Dodgy as......
