Dragon Quest has done it again in Japan, as the series' latest instalment has absolutely demolished the most recent software charts. Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age shifted a whopping 950,315 copies on PlayStation 4. Impressively, the home console version wasn't that far behind the 3DS edition, which clocked in at 1,148,888 copies. That's a big win for Sony's system.
Naturally, the release of such a huge game boosted PS4 hardware sales significantly, with the console chalking up 93,356 units across the standard model and PS4 Pro.

Amazing figures all across the board.
@get2sammyb You know whats sad? These numbers kill the alleged Switch release because if its just a port of one or the other why bother buying it?
Opening week of 2 days, and it's already Japan's best-selling PS4 game. Impressive.
That's a ton of consoles sold in a week!
I'm impressed with those numbers - I really thought it would sell considerably less compared to the 3DS version.
@Mahe Hasn't FFXV sold more than a million physical copies by now?
@mookysam With the success of the New 2DS XL, the handheld version will probably gain an edge over the PS4 version in the coming weeks. But this is still a very good result in Japan, which typically favors handheld games instead of home console games.
@naruball I don't think so. I haven't seen any news about that at least. FF15 crossing the million copies sold border would be worth the news, I think?
There's about 20M 3ds compared to 5M ps4 in japan, this number is very impressive
@BLP_Software Not at all. I guarantee you some are holding out for the switch version. Some will likely double dip. Unless you've lived in Tokyo like I have, you can't appreciate how much they value portability.
@EVIL-C But they already got a portable version.
Would they buy that again? Would they bother with a down ported PS4 version?
The power of Dragon Quest
This will be the first million seller for Ps4 in Japan! FFXV should also be around that mark right now. Last time I checked it was like 930k
So 2 million total. The boost for 2DS is impressive too. You figured everyone in Japan already had a 3DS.
Oh wow, DQ just stomped all over every other game released this year in Japan.
I expected the 3DS DQ XI to completely eclipse the PS4 one in sales, didn't think it would be that close given the gap with install base.
So approximately 20% of PS4 owners own this game, 1 in 5. Great hardware boost too.
@Mahe That's because it crossed that mark way earlier, combining physical and digital copies.
https://www.technobuffalo.com/2017/01/26/final-fantasy-xv-breaks-a-million-copies-in-japan-twice-as-many-sales-as-every-other-ps4-hit/
But if you only want to look at physical copies, it sold 907,768 by January http://www.playstationlifestyle.net/2017/01/11/japanese-sales-chart-ps4-sales-final-fantasy-xv-crosses-900000/
and it's been selling since then https://www.m-create.com/english/latest_research/e_ranking.html
i'm surprised that switch didn't go down to the usual 20k
Ps3 beat xbox 1. Lol
@Godsent ikr?! That's nuts.
@manu0 Japan loves Splatoon. Even the Wii U game sold over 1.5 million.
@naruball Oh yes, I forgot about digital sales. But the FF15 sales have been very slow since that update, so it's possible the physical release still hasn't reached a million.
Also, if we're not talking only about physical, DQ11 has digital sales too. There is no info about DQ11 digital sales yet, but if we assume a similar digital ratio as FF15, then DQ11 PS4 would also be above a million already.
@manu0
Splatoon 2 is still fairly new and Nintendo may be putting more systems on shelves, I think that would explain it. It's a pretty big win for Nintendo that sales didn't fall completely off this week.
Big win for SquareEnix as it looks like DQ still is as popular as ever (FF has seen declining returns across the board in recent times). Anything in the West, where it should still sell pretty well, is now icing on the cake.
@Gamer83
And after Splatoon there is MHXX so it wont go down as long as stock is available.
Bear in mind that these figures only account for physical purchases, which is pretty mind blowing really. shows the home console market isnt dead in Japan yet.
The digital sales only get announced by famitsu apparently, so we have to wait till the end of the month to find out what the clear picture is; but the gap between ds and ps4 is likely to be even smaller, even with Japan still primarily valuing physical over digital. It will be fascinating to see.
Do I even want to know what on earth those Vita games are that are in the chart?? I'm not going to bet on a western release in any event!
The Switch still doing big big numbers. Looking forward to seeing how Nintendo respond from a software pov
@BLP_Software
They're not identical for one thing. They'll have a fully portable version of the console flagship version.
It's going to do extremely well on switch.
@EVIL-C We dont know thats what it is though.
@BLP_Software It's the most logical assumption.
@Gamer83 It's also the fact that the system is fairly new and Japan has had stock shortages. To compare, PS4 has already sold over 5 million in Japan, and 2DS and 3DS systems have sold over 23 million combined. Switch has only sold 1.2 million or so. That means there are literally tens of millions of gamers in Japan that don't have a Switch, so when there is a big release (in Japan) like Splatoon and enough stock, some of them will buy the new system.
