After the disappointment of 2015’s rebooted Need for Speed, developer Ghost Games is going full-on Fast & Furious with 2017’s edition, Need for Speed Payback. Scheduled to release on 10th November, the new entry’s set in Fortune City, where you’ll be racing against a syndicate named the House that controls the city’s casinos, criminals, and cops.
Here’s what the blurb from a leaked Amazon listing says:
Play a variety of challenges and events as Tyler, the racer; Mac, the showman, and; Jess, the wheelman. Each driver must take on races, missions, and challenges to earn the respect of the valley's underground and compete in the Ultimate race to finally take down the House. Played almost every single NFS game since the original on the PS1 so im pretty excited for this. The fact that it sounds like theyre going back to the cringe-worthy story driven type game is def. reason for pause but hopefully the gameplay makes up for it. The last one was decent but got boring for me pretty quickly hope this one has more to do.
Am i the only person in the world anxiously waiting for a NFS the run 2 announcement? I really loved the Whole cross country driving and not a big fan of open world racing games for some reason made me really really love nfs the run. Odly this one is sounding a bit like 2015 nfs, hopefully I'm wrong, let's see
I can't wait for an NFS, but I don't get why they focus on plot so much. EA, people don't really buy this game for the story, but rather despite it. C'mon, we need a spiritual successor to Burnout Paradise.
I'm really hyped for this! I loved the 2015 edition and this looks like something different to that which can only be a good thing.
Most wanted from the PS2/PS3 era is still my favorite. They really need to remaster that game.
@RedMageLanakyn Most Wanted was great (and the Vita version was a seriously impressive port). I think my favourite NFS in recent memory is the Criterion's Hot Pursuit. Absolutely loved that game.
This new one looks good, but like others have said, their focus on narrative seems a bit misplaced to me. I'm sure we'll see more at E3, though. Not long to go now
I'm reading about the last game being "a disappointment" so much these days, I'm beginning to suspect that I'm gonna love it. Especially recalling how The Run - also proved to be a lot more fun than the internet described it. I do like racing games to have a storyline as well, complex or not. After the bunch of Black Box entries I had played, MW2012 actually felt lacking in that regard.
Payback seems like it's going GTA5 in terms of multiple protagonists? All the better. Consider me in the market for this game so far, although it had better either release on Switch as well or at least allow remapping brakes and acceleration.

@Brasilkilla I love open world NFSs, but The Run made sense not to be one, and I honestly liked it. But loading times didn't go well with rental Xbox 360 sessions I indulged in for a while, so I didn't get too far and I'm actually holding out for a re-release more (I know there's a 3DS port, but finding it here is a whole different issue).
Another "the RUN"?, oh well, for me, I am not interested for "a story arc" because almost every NFS with story, its gameplay is very limited for the story, don't single race/quick race for more action racing games after of complete the main game as the classics (or criterions) NFS's, and only online game is ALL in these games.
And, well, I do not say that it is bad or that it is not worth it, ; but, if NFS change of the classic "ilegal" racing game (driving in any area, challenging the traffic and the police, no problem with adds (but adds, not main) as Crashes Burnout style or Car customization) to another kind of "racing" or "cars" game, and, again, very limited and only more options for online only, well, for me, I think I'll think about it and maybe it's another NFS that won't add to my collection ...

You Should never feel bad about liking something! This game sounds like something I could get into. Loved all the Fast and Furious Movies.
Why do they think we want a terrible story. We need a great game with tuning.

@nhSnork I actually really liked it. the handling was a bit unpredictable but overall the game was great in my opinion.
