No, you don't have to play the first Ni no Kuni game on PlayStation 3 in order to wrap your head around Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom - that's according to PlayStation Access, who got to go hands on with the upcoming role-playing title at E3 2017. The lucky buggers.
While the sequel does take place within the same universe, it's an entirely separate story with vastly different themes - and that's something that's actually reflected in the title's gameplay. You can catch some new boss fight footage above.

YES!
Just what I wanted to know. Never owned a PS3, and PS Now sucks if you don't have a super-stable internet connection.
Will probably preorder this now.
Found the original a bit mundane myself, but this ones looking decent enough from the footage on show.
Preposterous! Sequels should always leave those who never played the earlier games lost and discombobulated.
I really hope that they are not forgetting about oliver and drippy all together. Still love the first game
Good, because unless they port it, I have no way to play the original.
This game looks beautiful
I suppose it hints at no plans for a re-release anytime soon. Perhaps the DS original will end up fantranslated sooner after all.
@nhSnork @OneBagTravel @Ralizah You can always just buy a PS3, they're going for $160-$200 Like New on Amazon now: https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B009DL2TBA/ref=olp_f_usedLikeNew?ie=UTF8&f_new=true&f_usedLikeNew=true&qid=1497559049&sr=8-1
As for the first game I'm sure you can find it cheap on Amazon or PSN.
@ToddlerNaruto thanks for the link, but while Amazon never ships such stuff to Belarus, there are affordable units to be found here, too. I would have long bought a PS3 (and a PS2 and a Wii U and Xbox 360/One) over the years if I could expect to play them properly. Alas, work schedules and general routines beg to differ. Portability has been my ticket to active gaming pretty much since the end of my university student days; PS4 and Switch are the only* TV-compatible platforms I own now for different but homogeneous reasons - and TV compatibility itself is not among them.
I want this so bad.
I hope it's as bonkers as the Mummy's Tummy part in the first game.
I must admit, I'm a bit sad that the familiars were scrapped but the new combat system with those higgledy thingies looks pretty interesting.
The combat seems ok but I'm really really sad the familiar part is gone!
@Ralizah if it's even half as good as the original were in for a real treat, that game was probably my favourite game on the PS3 or at least in my top 3
I find it utterly bizarre they haven't ported the original, it defies logic.
@carlos82 Yeah, it's one of my few regrets about not owning a PS3. I was hoping for a PS4 port, but I'll take a sequel that has the same gorgeous style and is fully appreciable as an independent experience.
Really looking forward to this. I played a few hours of the first game on PS Now (never had a PS3). I liked it a lot but PS Now made it frustrating. It'd lag during boss fights and I was always worried about losing the connection when I hadn't saved for a while.
Cannot wait for Ni No Kuni II to release the first was excellent.
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi This is Level-5 we're talking about, they never port older games for newer consoles, with a few exceptions.
Not to mention this is their very first PS4 game, they're still novices when it comes to PS4.
