What the heck is this? A Japanese role-playing game not named 'Final Fantasy' at number one? Surely not? It's true: Persona 5 has robbed the rest of the UK sales charts blind this week, climbing to the summit and securing Atlus' best ever launch in Britain by some margin. Not bad at all, eh?
The title sold 97 per cent of its copies on the PlayStation 4, with three per cent of players plumping up for the PlayStation 3 version – an interesting statistic, no? The title overcame Mass Effect: Andromeda, which fell all the way down into fifth. Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Wildlands, LEGO Worlds, and Grand Theft Auto V rounded out the top five.
LEGO City Undercover entered in eighth, though almost half of its copies sold on the Nintendo Switch, perhaps demonstrating an apathy from other console owners – or a hunger for more software on the House of Mario's new handheld. The only other new entry was Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition, which struggled in 23rd position.
UK Sales Charts: Week Ending 8th April, 2017

- LEGO Worlds
- Grand Theft Auto V
- Mass Effect: Andromeda

Nicee, japan is trully back
About bulletstorm, I want to try it but there's no way I'm gonna spend $60 for a 2011 game, are they nut? Given the choice of horizon, persona 5, nioh, or resident evil 7 there's no freaking way people will chose bulletstorm. I thought it was $20 game!
Really impressive. I haven't gotten this game yet, but as far as I heard it's really good so it might deserve that success.
Its even more impressive when you consider how difficult it is to source a copy of the game at the moment. This and yakuza 0 are the only games in recent memory where I have been relieved to pre-order and secure my copy for day one. Hopefully with a quiet week of releases, Atlus and Deep Silver can get more stock into stores to make it two weeks in a row. Congratulations on this achievement. It is well deserved. Absolutely fantastic game. 2017 continues to deliver.
Yeah my top 3 games so far this year are Japanese, what with Resi 7, Nier and Persona.
They really do make the best games, when they want to.
Well deserved. It's amazing.
Very impressive! I wasn't expecting it to do that well considering it seems to have been undershipped. According to chart track its the first JRPG to reach number one here since Ni No Kuni. Japanese games have been smashing it so far this year.
Well deserved and it's easily the best game I've played this year on any format and may even be the best game on the console. Japan have been smashing it recently with this Yakuza 0 and Resident Evil 7 with only Horizon from the west getting a look in front me. I suspect Nier would be up there too but I don't have time to play it 😔
On a side note it seems Switch owners are desperate for any game at the minute
@carlos82 lol might wanna double check the spelling on Nier, you're close to something else. Unless you meant the country, of course
@carlos82 If a game comes out called Niger is that illegal? I don't actually know...
Regarding Switch owners, lets run down this.
1 - A lot of Switch owners probably didn't own a Wii U, so LCU/MK8 are new to them
2 - Maybe other systems just didn't give a toss about an old port being sold at full price? I mean didn't that plague low sales on Wii U too?
3 - Havent LEGO games sold better on those platforms anyway? Maybe with a few exceptions but I always thought they did decently well there.
4 - One thing I keep hearing is that the PS4 isn't portable.
Or yeah, maybe there isn't anything to play because Switch has no games, it doesn't have any good games, its underpowered trash that needs to equal PS4 minimum and doesn't even have a web browser, le gasp.
Or, you know, LEGO just hits the current demographic well.
And didn't release at the same time as Persona 5.
It's true, it's DAMN true.
Approaching 40 hours and it still has me captivated. Hopefully the trophy guide will be out soon. I'd like to get the platinum in NG+.
No doubt Lego City Undercover and Bulletstorm suffered because of their ridiculous pricing. £40-50 for remasters of 4-6 year old games is just stupid.
P5's pretty good i'm starting to enjoy it more now at about 35 hour's in. The constant talking is getting tedious though, atm it seem's 50% of the game is a game and the other 50% is talking about the game and explaining what we've done or what we are about to do for the tenth time. The actual gameplay is damn good fun though.
@Gatatog Agreed.
With recent successes like Yakuza, Nioh, Nioh and now Persona it does make you wonder whether people tastes have changed towards Japanese games,
18 hours in and i've only just beaten the first dungeon. Loving it, loving it, loving it.
Nintendo Switch is a brand new platform with a very limited lineup of games, whereas the PS4 has finally hit its stride and is swimming in great games. Not surprised so many sales are for the Switch version of LCU.
I'm surprised but really happy that Persona 5 is even doing so well in the UK. Especially considering the relative lack of advertising for it. Imagine if Sony had done more to show it off!
@kyleforrester87 haha my stupid phone, such a pain for names of some games. Changed now
UKIE are saying Persona 5 first JPRG to be Number One since Ni Nu Kuni, yet Pokemon has took top spot. I emailed UKIE and got this reply on the subject.

I was close to buying P5 as I got caught up in all the lovliness but couldn't find a copy and also realised I don't have the money or time with Zelda on the go and a huge backlog. Will defo try and pick up this year.
A great launch for gaming - something a little different doing so well.
@BLP_Software my phone trying to get me in trouble 😃
I actually own a Switch too and even having bought Mario Kart 8 on Wii U previously will probably still buy on Switch. I just wish there were more games now that I've finished Zelda, I don't mind the release schedule being padded with ports/remasters but I can't see an old Lego game released at that price as the answer
@carlos82 I think MK8 has a lower than previous launch RRP as well....its WB being WB at the end of the day. Everyone gets screwed there. :/
Yay! P5 deserves it. People complain about content in their games, but P5 has it in spades. And its meaningful too! It's not just a bunch of fetch quests and tower climbs.
You'll never see it cominnnng, you'll see!
