There comes a time when you have to sit down, take a hard look at what you're seeing, and just try to tell it like it is. Numerous other gaming sites have reported on this already, and we could have quite easily made our headline out to be a little more hopeful, but the day that we start taking 'leaks' from unknown sources seriously is the day that we quit our jobs and become football reporters instead. And yes, we know all too well that we're writing a story on this Destiny 2 rumour anyway, but we at least thought that we should weigh in with our own opinions on the matter.
So, according to a Reddit post - written by an account with no posting history, we might add - Destiny 2's beans have been spilled, revealing that the sequel runs on an entirely new engine, features a Cabal-heavy storyline, and its official title is Destiny II: Forge of Hope. Oh, and your Destiny characters won't carry over, but let's be honest, that's just about expected, isn't it?
Now, there's a chance that this whole thing could be totally legitimate. As with any leak, there's absolutely no way of knowing for sure whether this information is accurate or not - but we can still speculate. For starters, we're just not sure that Bungie has had the time to build a brand new engine "from the ground up". The post claims that the new engine will allow the developer to update Destiny 2 far more frequently, which would obviously be nice and seems like something that the studio would be aiming for, but to create an entirely fresh engine? Again, we don't quite buy it.
Next up, the Cabal-centric storyline falls in line with a recently announced Mega Bloks Destiny playset, which supposedly has no ties with the current game, featuring an attack on the Tower by the bulky war-obsessed aliens. To be honest, though, that playset could mean anything. It could just be an original take, or it might even reference the upcoming spring update. Either way, this Reddit poster is clearly aware of the whispers that the toy caused - if this leak turns out to be true, it all makes sense, but anyone could very easily compile similar, past rumours together and come up with a post just like this one.
The post goes on to say that Bungie already has a small team working on the sequel's first major expansion, which is apparently set to release in the autumn of 2018. If Destiny 2 launches near the end of this year, would the first expansion really be scheduled for release almost a year later? All we're saying is that these supposed content updates must be pretty darn meaty.
Here's another quote that doesn't add up for us: "The next instalment will be launching on five platforms: PS4, PS4 Pro, Xbox One, Xbox Scorpio (TBA) and PC." Publishers aren't going to start separating PS4 and PS4 Pro, and we assume that it'll be the same for Xbox One and Scorpio - why would it be written like this? It's just all a bit weird, innit?
Anyway, whether we believe the post to be accurate or not doesn't matter - it's already made its way around the web and back again. However, it's well worth remembering that anyone can write anything on the internet.
Update: Bungie marketing director and writer Eric Osborne has confirmed on Twitter that this whole 'leak' is a load of old shite. We told you to be cynical!

A Cabal heavy story and Guardians not carrying over was already much rumoured for awhile so the leak is not exactly anything new. Very interested to see what Destiny 2 is like, have Bungie learned from the first one by giving us a better story and more varied missions.
Well your "logic" just blew your chances of ever getting a job a Fox News or to ever be taken seriously by the Trump administration. Don't you know we live in a post-truth world now? #AlternativeFacts
I really hope if it comes to PC they make the gameplay more challenging for all platforms. It felt like it was almost on rails for the most part in terms of AI, and i'm pretty terrible with a controller on FPS games. It'd be pretty boring with m+kb if they stuck to the same formula.
I reckon that title Forge of Hope is cack, that leaked The Gods Forge DLC title is spookily similar to the Archons Forge from Rise of Iron..but anyways.
I can see the Cabal storyline being true, and what with the Megablox things as well, that all adds up to be fair. Im fully expecting to not being able to carry over current characters, and I can see them updating the engine, not "from ground up"
We'll see if the Activision reports mentions anything other than the fact that Destiny 2 is releasing this year, I doubt it though, Im hyped for its release anyway.
@PapaShuffler you jus mad cuz u ugly
Destiny 2 on PS4 Pro and Scorpio... drool!!!
Hmm i always expected D2 to have a new engine. I always read the whole problem with D1 updates not coming quick enough (and when they did often using recycled areas) was because it took an awful long time for them to create new spaces with the engine they had. I would put money on the next game running on a new engine.
Donald Trump tweeted it too.
Seems genuine and probably likely true.
@kyleforrester87 No doubt that the engine will be upgraded, but an engine that's literally been built from scratch for Destiny 2? I just can't quite believe it.
@ShogunRok ah perhaps you're right. At any rate of the stories are true about how tough it is to develop using the current engine I expect they will be making some substantial changes to it.
@ShogunRok
You're probably correct but I think anything is possible. Remember a lot of what held them back with the first game was the fact that they also had to be programming for last generation consoles. That impediment will no longer exist going forward. Whether it's a new engine, or a completely revamped engine, I expect there will be a lot of changes regardless.
@kyleforrester87 Yeah, definitely. I'm expecting a heavily tweaked engine, just not one that's been built from scratch. We'll see soon I imagine (E3).
@NorrinRadd For sure, Bungie said itself that last-gen hardware held a lot of the first game's scope back, which explains the scaled-down environments among other things. I think big changes are a must not just for Bungie's benefit in how it approaches supporting the game, but for potential players, too.
I'm sure Destiny would have been able to keep hold of a lot more people had it been better realised from early-on, but it's been a learning process for Bungie. To be honest, I can't see this sequel being anything other than an improvement.
Updated the story, it's been confirmed fake as we implied in the article.
Silly rumours aside, I'm looking forward to seeing what Destiny 2 looks like when it is eventually revealed. Loved parts of the first one but it didn't quite have enough content to keep me coming back. If they address that then I'm in.
