When Dragon Age: Inquisition launched on PlayStation 4 in 2014, we were confident that it was one of the best role-playing games on the console - mostly because there wasn't much competition. In 2015, however, it more than met its match; The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt basically blew it away in almost every department. There was one area in particular, though, where CD Projekt Red's masterpiece downright embarrassed Inquisition: its side quests.
Where Inquisition offered diary entries and fetch quests, Wild Hunt spoiled us with genuinely interesting personal stories and loads of player choice, raising the bar for the entire genre. Fortunately, it seems as though BioWare is keen to try and follow in The Witcher 3's footsteps rather than its previous project's. Speaking to PC Gamer about Mass Effect: Andromeda, producer Fabrice Condominas says that the studio is taking a more thoughtful approach to side quests.
"We are approaching the completionist aspect very differently, because we've done and learned a lot from Inquisition, but we've also observed what other games have been doing, like The Witcher," Condominas explains. "It was very important for us that the quantity of scope doesn't downgrade the quality of whatever you are doing there," Condominas continues.
Hopefully Andromeda won't just be Dragon Age: Inquisition in space, as many onlookers have speculated. That said, BioWare has confirmed that there'll be enemy camps to capture and crafting materials to scan, so we're still unconvinced that it won't be stuffed with your usual open world guff. At least we'll find out next month, eh?

OK let's all hold our breath and let see what they do....
Everyone's harping on Inquisition side quests and rightfully so, but lost amid that is the fact that the main quest storyline was totally dull, short and uninspiring too . They're saying all the right things now, but I'll believe it when I see it.
There were also some other interesting tidbits from that interview, like the fact that they aiming for a lighter tone, more optimistic bent and supposedly there is no overarching threat this time around.
I pre-ordered this months ago - long before we received any real information and that 'story' trailer with some unusual facial animation. Still looking forward to it though as I really enjoyed the previous trilogy.
I know that side quests are not always that great, that different or interesting but they are optional and I often completed them more for XP, rewards or just for something to do before getting back to the 'story'. Obviously I prefer them to have more depth than a bog standard fetch quest - although the Witcher had these too. I believe that the crew have their own side quests in this. No doubt I will try to complete as many as possible...
Call me crazy, but I thoroughly enjoyed my time with DA:I. I felt the story and gameplay together made an enjoyable experience.
Nice to know they have set their targets high, time will tell if they succeed, I'm hopeful.
good because dragon age inquisition sucks
evil within is a way better game than dragon age inquisition.
so is far cry 4
The side mission in the Witcher 3 where you had to bust into an old lady's house to retrieve her frying pan had a better story than DA: Inquisition's main one.
@Lurker I'm enjoying DAI not perfect but still a fun game. Then Witcher3 DLC, then it will be 2018 lol
@playstation1995 lol never played that game horror not really my thing
@ApostateMage LOL no way
@playstation1995 I thought evil within sucked....and I still agree that it's better than DAI. It was just so....boring after you get out of the first major area.
I enjoyed my time with DAI but after player Witcher 3 I found it hard to go back to DAI.
I'm all for less guff.
@playstation1995 you've just made possibly the best statement in the forums followed by the worst examples of better games. Funny though.
Looking forward to this but I am in the "Hopefully Andromeda won't just be Dragon Age: Inquisition in space, as many onlookers have speculated. " camp. I am worried but hell its mass effect, how bad can it get......
There's no 'probably' about it, this is absolutely a good thing. The Witcher 3 is one of (some would say the) the premier games this generation, Dragon Age: Inquisition is decent at best.
@Gamer83
Agreed, but then again their statement isn't really that strong, they "observed what other games like Witcher 3 are doing", that's fine but how will that influence their game in the end?
Would be funny if the parts of Witcher 3 that they have "observed" and implemented turned out to be things like smuggler caches, bandit camps and monster nests (I think they actually have the latter two in the game).
I preferred DA although the aesthetic and polish on Witcher was immense. Just bought the DLC so I'll be playing Witcher again soon, maybe my opinion will change after that.
I really hope this one isn't just padded out with busy work.
