The PlayStation 4 is now looking ahead to its fourth year on the market, but it shows now signs of slowing down in terms of sales. Taking to the stage at the company's CES keynote, Sony CEO Kaz Hirai revealed that the current-gen console has topped 53 million worldwide sales. Our last update on PS4 sales came before Christmas, when the machine had smashed past the 50 million mark.
Perhaps even more impressive, though, is that the console managed to sell through a gigantic 6.2 million units over the 2016 holiday period. That's a huge amount of hardware to shift over such a short space of time, and is no doubt an indication of the PS4's overall popularity. At this point, it's safe to say that the console has got a firm grip on the market.
The PS4 continues to go from strength to strength, then, and with so many heavy hitting titles lined up over the course of 2017, we can't see that changing. Are you left impressed by the PS4's success? Give Kaz a thumbs up in the comments section below.

It's ridiculous. I know people will balk at this comparison, but to put into perspective, PS4 sold roughly HALF the Wii U's entire lifetime install base in around five weeks.
@get2sammyb And more than a third of the Vita's lifetime sales!
@ShogunRok plus i bet money that the slim and pro will be $200 and $300 in the US during black friday/holiday.
@WebHead Yes, that's the amazing thing. You can see the play moving forwards, and $199 PS4 will be mental this Christmas. They've also got, as far as I understand, marketing rights to Call of Duty 2017, Red Dead Redemption 2, Star Wars Battlefront 2, and probably Destiny 2...
Cool, now hopefully they'll start buying games as well. PS4 does have some good ones to play but you wouldn't know it by the pitiful holiday numbers.
it's impressive that it continues selling so well.. despite not having many games i want to play.
so what happens when u have a console that doesn't have many exclusives, release a bunch of remasters and indie games? u sell 53 million units and beat everyone in this lame console generation.
Yep. It's the PS2 all over again. Sony is utterly destroying the competition this gen.
Wow, that is impressive...
very impressive...although i still feel that their gaming exclusives are not strong enough to warrant a purchase...many of their said AAA titles have no release dates whatsoever...Sony release very little information other than how much consoles they keep selling.
Well done Sony, that's a huge win.
I thought they had played the situation wrong with psvr and pspro at the same time, Sony in fact played their cards brilliantly.
Gaming is like the Scottish premiership, only one team in it atm. It aint good for football and it aint good for gaming! Anyway GJ Sony.
I would love to know install figures for PSVR and also the distinction between Pro and Slim, but as a PS4 owner, then this is good news. I think they are positioned well for the new Scorpio.
@xMEADx It's always been like this really, last gen was one exception. NES dominated the MS, SNES crapped on the MD, PS1 made a mockery of Saturn and N64, PS2 humiliated, DC, Xbox and GC. I'm pretty sure that so far in 75% of generations that have had 3+ consoles, the best seller outsold the other two or three combined.
@Gamer83 Actually... I'm just about to post an article about that!
I'm one of those holiday buyers. I own both the Wii U and 3DS, and I was very happy with both. However, I missed out on playing some of the titles that were never going to see the light of day on a Nintendo system. I also got a bit impatient with Nintendo's lack of details in regards to the Switch.
@gizmoto I love your avatar so funny
@scorpioMKD Are you joking....
If there are no exclusive games you like now then PS is not for you.
@xMEADx Well we keep getting big titles so i dont see a problem here.
Good for Sony. I would've been one of those 6 million but I came across a bundle that was too hard to pass back in March so I had to pull the trigger. I realized I was missing out on so many great games by only gaming on Nintendo consoles and I've never been more right in my life!
That's insane. Apparently Uncharted 4's reached 8+ million sales too
@xMEADx I think that you are making assumptions based not on history, but on fear. Contrary to popular belief, having one dominate platform holder does not mean that the gamers will suffer, or that innovation and creativity will be stifled. Take Sony as an example, they were dominate (by a huge margin) in the PS1 era, and what came out of that? Laziness? Complacency? No, the PS2 came out of that. The best selling console in history.
Sony had no real competition in either of those generations, yet they still pushed technology, pushed quality, and above all, made a great system. The PS3 wasn't a smash hit like the PS1 and PS2, but it was far from complacency. In fact it was its desire to be more and push boundaries (BluRay, PS1 and PS2 compatibility, 1080p, built in HDD and WiFi, BlueTooth, etc...) that cost them the crown. (Still, with a year less on market, they managed to end the generation with the same sales as the 360)
Yeah but where is VR, sold out for months. W*nkers.
@portalplayer2 YOU should get a pc and Xbox mate if you think PS4 is lame. Give it up! Sell your PS4 secondhand and let someone who loves gaming and wants to play some of the most amazing visually stunning games ever produced. If this gen can't satisfy your demands have you considered the Wii u? Or mobile freemium games? I hear PC total Warhammer or CIV 6 might be decent. You can also try retro... ps2 or SNES are really cheep... yeah go waste time and relive past memories... repeat and get stuck in time warp. I hear black and white TV use to have many classics... laurel and hardy or buster Keating. Personally I reckon PS4 will hit 60-70 million by end 2017!!!
