Between the movie, car, decade-long development cycle, and official restaurant menu, it's safe to say that Square Enix has a lot riding on Final Fantasy XV. The publisher's put out some positive numbers following the long-awaited foray's launch this week, then, revealing that the RPG has sold five million copies globally thus far.
This number accounts for physical and digital sales, though it's probably worth noting that these are very likely shipped figures. Retailers aren't in the habit of buying stock that won't sell, but if you start to see sharp declines in the game's price this Christmas, then you may fairly surmise that the publisher sent out too many copies. It's done it before.
Still, this is good news. The game registered the highest ever digital launch in Japan, while it also broke records in other parts of Asia. Square Enix has said that after this successful launch it will continue the development of the game with downloadable content and updates, such as the 60 frames-per-second patch promised for the PS4 Pro.

Great, well done Tabata and team. I thought it would launch as a big creaking mess, but while the demos did not impress they really seem to have pulled out the stops to take on feedback and improve it.
Again, only a few hours in and not out the first area yet, but already can see me enjoying this for a good long while. Excellent : )

Wow, missing Black Friday might not have hurt it as bad as I thought it would. The game actually isn't that bad. I've liked other Final Fantasy spinoffs like Crisis Core and this started as a spinoff so I gave it a try and don't regret it. Just 8 hours in but the combat seems really fun and that's definitely what helps drive RPGs.

@Xaessya FFXIV is full of quirky little descriptions like that, especially about the minions. love them.
My retail copy is at home waiting for Uncharted 4 to be done. I purposely avoided most trailers and articles about this game. I somehow expected this to be a good game and can't wait for the Uncharted plat to pop so I can dive into the world of FFXV.
@ApostateMage I don't know for sure in your case, but the combat is much more varied in the full game than in the Platinum demo. There are many more weapons to use and a really cool spell crafting system, and enemy types that help keep the game from feeling repetitive. If you're on the fence about this game you should make a Japanese account and download the Judgement Disc Demo. I think it's like the first chapter of the game. They changed a lot from the Platinum demo for sure; I can safely say the full game is leagues better than that demo.
As always look at some gameplay, and maybe check reviews.

So 5 million is good for a world famous FF game, but a few years ago they were looking for 10 million with Tomb Raider?
So anybody want to help out the noob? About how long after inserting my disc will it be before I can play it? Do I need to install the entire game and download and install that 7.8GB day 1 patch, b/c that all would take about 5 hours on my PS3.
Does PS4 have auto shut-off? We're spending the day at my parents so if it will take that long I'll put it in before we leave, but we'll be gone about 12 hours so I don't want it on that long with nobody home. Same for the day after, it's my niece 11th birthday, I think we're taking her to Rockefeller Center to see the tree.
This whole install to HDD thing kind of sucks. But for everybody waiting for external HDD support, be careful what you wish for, keeping track of everything on Wii U is a nightmare with Nintendo archaic system. Hopefully if Sony does get around to it they do a much better job with data management.

Release a GOTY edition after all the DLC is done then in 2 years time release on PC.
This may actually go on to become the best selling Final Fantasy ever and it would be well deserved- I'm completely addicted to it.

It'll easily sell 10 mil but I imagine their target is 15-20 though. A tough ask.
@rjejr Installs are ridiculously fast on PS4. If you're coming off PS3, you'll be amazed at the difference. Obviously, you will want the patch downloaded and installed, but you can do that in 'Rest Mode', which is like a low-power state for the system.
Really nice surprise, I honestly thought it would flop.

@rjejr About 5-10 minutes, ps4 usually install game quickly to hdd. You can play the game without patch but you can't use the games online component before you installed the patch. Yes ps4 has auto shut-off, you can change the time in the settings.
I prefer installing to hdd rather than playing the game on disc, the install time is quick and the disc drive is silent while playing. Since we can change internal hdd ourself (with standard 2.5mm laptop), ps4 doesn't have external hdd support doesn't bother me.
I love the homoerotic subtext. Yep, just 4 well groomed pals out in the desert together. It's gonna be gears of war all over again.
@Dakt 5 million shipped is impressive. It'll be more than that before it breaks even though, goodness.
I honestly thought releasing right after Pokémon would knock it's chances, but maybe 15 and Pokémon combined knock the chances of every other game this autumn. Wouldn't surprise me people go for the biggest hitters. Both games are very in your face with advertising.

I opened up the Slim box but I couldn't get the console out easily and I didn't want to mess it up before Christmas. And I'm not taking the shrink wrap off of FFXV, my kids will think I got it used from Gamestop. Nothing like shrink wrap on Christmas morning.
Oh well, guess we'll muddle through. After the holidays are over I'll let ya know how it all went, and how impressed I was. You've been telling me for 3 years now how much better PS4 functions than PS3, can't wait to find out for myself.
Well deserved! I don't think they were too fussed about the game being that profitable anyway, the mission of XV was to bring back positiveness about Final Fantasy. Their next project is the safety blanket FF7R and you know they are going to sell buck loads of that. Even if with Nomura directing it anything can happen...can he just focus on chara design and Kingdom hearts, please.

@ApostateMage I was HORRIFIED by the thought that they finally made a Final Fantasy with a battle system I couldn't like at all after that terribad Platinum demo but combat in the game is a lot of fun.
Really glad to hear they are doing so well. Of all of the games I have highly anticipated since I got a PS4(MGS V,FO4,TW3,FFXV, and a couple others I cant remember) this is definitely my favorite of them all. Why? This game has something that a LOT of games have been missing for some time, heart and soul. You could feel the love put into this before you even start it. Congratulations Square, keep em coming!
Well, 4 of those copies are on account of me.
Let's see, first got the deluxe edition, then got the day one ( I always do that for Final Fantasy games so I can have the normal game cases all side-by-side in addition to the LE boxes and steel books).
But then I notice there's a cut mark across the spine of the game case. So I order a new one from BestBuy, and figured I would just sell the other copy or trade it in since it's already opened.
But my new copy arrives, and IT HAS THE SAME CUT MARK ACROSS THE SPINE! Wtf!
Now I've gotta get another copy.
This was their plan all along. Sell damaged copies so the collectors looking for a copy that doesn't actually have the artwork all cut up have to buy it four times
