Hideo Kojima really taxed the translators at Sony's Tokyo Game Show press conference today, talking cryptically about his upcoming game Death Stranding – which will launch exclusively for the PlayStation 4. Given that development on the title only started a few months ago, the acclaimed auteur didn't have anything new to show, but he did talk a little bit about what we can expect.

As already reported, a death stranding is when deceased marine life washes up on the shore of a beach. According to Kojima, his new game will deal with entities "stranding" on Earth, all of which will be connected by a cord. The former Metal Gear man explained that the game will boast an open world with online elements.

Kojima's explanation of the game was so vague that it's hard to glean much from how it will work, but it sounds like he wants to make an experience where everyone is connected all of the time – perhaps in a similar way to Dark Souls or even Destiny? It's not entirely clear, but he did use a drawing of Guillermo Del Toro to illustrate his point. Is he involved in the project just like Silent Hills?

The veteran also said that he's finally settled upon an engine for the game, with Eurogamer.net reporting that he may be using the same tech as Media Molecule's Dreams. Kojima has heaped a lot of praise on the British studio, but we've also heard speculation that he may be leveraging Sucker Punch's proprietary tech – particularly because of its emphasis on motion capture.

Personally, we think that the luminary should step back a bit until he's got something new to show. This game's going to take years to make, and while it's nice to see Kojima back in the limelight again, are we really going to have to hear him describe the title at every presser from now on? We can appreciate that Sony's stoked to have him on board, but c'mon
