Apologies for diverting your attention away from the E3 hype, but we've got to cover the latest Japanese sales charts. We're not really sure why we're bothering, though, as there really isn't much to talk about on the PlayStation front. Sony's home console dropped to second place in the hardware charts for the first time in weeks, losing out to Nintendo's New 3DS LL, which spiked thanks to the newest Phoenix Wright game.
Dragon Quest Heroes II stuck around in second place in the software charts on PS4, while Overwatch managed to remain in the top five. New entries included Mirror's Edge Catalyst and the Perfect Edition of Project CARS, but neither newcomer boasted numbers worthy of note.

I didn't think there were 21k people left in Japan who didn't own a 3DS yet. Which makes me wonder if they already did? Which makes me wonder if I'll be thinking the same thing about PS4 sales when Neo releases? I wonder if MS will even bother w/ Scorpio in Japan? Model S maybe, small and white is nice.
@rjejr I doubt Neo will do much for PS4 sales in Japan. The existing system's not exactly selling great, I don't see why a new model would improve things.
@rjejr I think that home console won't beat handheld in Japan for a long time, maybe ever.
The PS4K may boost sales for a bit, but don't believe to be great.
@get2sammyb My point was, who will buy Neo, current PS4 owners looking to upgrade, or non PS4 owners? It makes a difference when trying to figure out the install game for game sale percentages. If its non-PS4 owners, that increases the install base, if it's current PS4 owners trading in their old models, or sticking them in the closet, that less total PS4 in use than sold/purchased.
And I'm still waiting to buy mine. you got an idea for an ETA in your head? Is 2017 the earliest or does holiday 2016 still sound realistic? That would make 3 years w/o a slim.
@Frank90 Home consoles are a dieing breed, no matter how well PS4 may ultimately sale, things are only going down, not up. If you add up Gamecube, PS2, Xbox, and Wii, PS2, Xbox360, and Wii U, PS3, X1. I mayave messed tha tup, but you get the idea, total home console sales are on the decline, smart tvs and tablets and set-top boxes and cloud computing mean they are never going back up.
xbox one 46 lol
@rjejr Agree and disagree, there's no denying the decline. But the worlds been stuck in recession and certain countries in Asia have ridiculous populations with hardly any land, which means smaller homes with more people in them. That's why mobile dominates over there. Consoles were once the only way to enjoy games, not the case anymore with smart phones however terrible the experience.
@themcnoisy Well I see the agree part, but not really the disagree part. Are you adding "financial constraints" into the mix, since handhelds tend t be cheaper than consoles, or simply that people spend all their money on $500 iPhones and $70 monthly bills so they have no money left for gaming?
I can agree w/ any of that, no disagreement necessary, it's still the decline of home consoles in favor of phones.
@rjejr total home console sales are on the decline, smart tvs and tablets and set-top boxes and cloud computing mean they are never going back up.
I don't agree with this, x1 is selling better than x360 at this stage. Ps4 is on course to sell better than ps2. In consoles gamers have a big purchase every 5-6 years and are happy to move on. Parents have a boss present to give their kids. Consoles wont die unless Sony and Microsoft continue the march to become PCs.
Smart tvs - does anybody use the features?
Tablets - selling about a third compared to three years ago.
Cloud Computing - better in conjunction with a dedicated base unit than alone.
If anything PC will beat consoles in the end, but PCs issues (which I have regularly) like crashing out of nowhere or rubbish performance of a game happen all of the time. Also you always feel behind. I put a small fortune into a custom PC. I couldn't get Crysis to run properly. I needed a different graphics card for some of the effects and I had just bought the bloody thing for £1400.
Xbox One-46.
SERIOUSLY!? I knew it was struggling but good grief!
PS4 down because of summer drought? Or PS4 Neo worries?
@rjejr The DS is still some 10 million units ahead of the 3DS in Japan alone. 21k, that's nothing.
@rjejr More or less, the sales are good for now in general, even with the occasional lack of AAA games, and in 10 years nobody will play with smarphones or tablets, the culture is always changing, Consoles were the future 30/20 years ago, pc 15 years ago, consoles again, then PC again and now tablets and the reality is neither consoles or pc were extincts. They're changing but believe you will see ps10 and Nintendo Super Anything.
Something tells me that it is Phoenix Wright that is responsible for the surge in 3DS sales. Will be interesting to see what happens next week.
@Frank90 If by Nintedo Super Anything you mean an amiibo and Van's sneakers, then OK, but I highly doubt a Ntinedo home console in 50 years when the PSX wold be out. I'm not even sure PS will make it to 7. PS5 is a given, PS6 very likely, but by PS7 we may all be jacking in like the Matrix.
@Mahe "21k, that's nothing"
Well, it's 18k more than Wii U and 8k more than 3DS LL sold last week. So it's a big imrpovement from last week, which is probably a better comparison than ancient DS sales.
since the ps3 is still selling, maybe they can get rid of that 1tb maximum internal hdd limit. i just upgraded my ps4 that would really like to be in a ps3.
