When Tom Clancy's The Division was initially revealed, we were thrown into a snowy recreation of Brooklyn - one of New York's most famous boroughs. However, according to a statement from creative director Magnus Jansen, published by Examiner, Brooklyn won't feature in the finished game - at least, not at launch.
"For Tom Clancy's The Division we are going with Midtown Manhattan. It is because of the 1 to 1 re-creation and the way the pandemic has [happened]. Basically, everything has been hit and there are no more resources because everyone tried to get out. There is no more gasoline in the cars, there is no traffic, you're on foot," Jansen explains.
The developer also assures the publication that The Division is "a very sizable open-world game", and that "Midtown Manhattan is a huge open-world experience and more than enough to sink your teeth into". Could other boroughs be added to the release via downloadable content? We could certainly see it, especially if the title ends up featuring expansions similar to Destiny's.
Were you looking forward to seeing Brooklyn in The Division, or was that original gameplay demo so long ago that you couldn't care less? Escape from New York in the comments section below.

I've wanted to play a Tom Clancy game for a while as it's always sparked my attention, I was looking at the Humble Bundle (which I'm not sure if it's still present) that contained a majority of the Clancy games I believe, but I didn't pick it up in the end because I'm not sure it was worth it and I don't see the hype, I watched approximately 30 seconds of a video and it just seemed like an ordinary FPS game.
What makes Tom Clancy so special and would it be wise to pick up The Division as a first, or should I go back and get story or something?
what a surprise, Ubisoft cutting down a game before launch
*SHOCKER
Was that the bit that looked better in the 2013 E3 demo?! hehe
Probably include it in future DLC like Destiny
Mmmmmmm......DLC.....mmmm....
Yeah, it's obviously gonna be DLC, if they gave us most of the famous parts of the city then there'd be nowhere left to expand the DLC to, I'm not sure if an apocalyptic Jersey Shore DLC would be greatly appealing.
@Phillendon it's third person, it has a single player campaign, it's a huge open world and it's an rpg also apparently. It's more like Destiny than your average first person shooter game.
I hope there is some really high level customisation in this game for your character.
I have a feeling this is going to be another disappointment from Ubisoft.
pre-order, check it out then feel free to bad mouth it and cancel pre-order. This game was my reasoning for buying ps4 way back at the start. I admit some things now have me worried but not enough to give up on the game until I at least play the thing.
This doesn't worry me much of course they have removed stuff they delayed the game for 2 year's is it? It wouldn't suprise me if they've removed more ,tbh they have probobly added/removed a hell of a lot in the last 2 year's. As i'll be getting mine off the PSN store the whole year's DLC is only going to cost me £25, they can cram as much dlc in there as they want for all I care and I also don't care if they could of fit it into the release but chose not to, i'm sick of all this crybaby dlc rubbish anyway
Sounds like a way to charge more for a piece of a game that was originally intended to be a part of the main release. At least now they admit they are doing this to sell it later. Wow.
The only thing i've seen that's Destinyish is it's an RPG shooter, there's nothing else that make's it Destiny like that you wouldn't find in any other RPG shooter. Apart from it's on console ofc and that people keep using that word Destiny. Even the DLC isn't Destiny like, there's a season pass.
@TomKongPhooey I like that plan. Certainly the industry is using Betas as the new demos at the moment.
THANK GAWD.
So a porttion has been cut from the gameplay not a big deal its done in other media all of the time. How many times is a scene filmed for a movie and then never ends up in the final title. If its released as DLC later then so be it no one ever forces you to buy the extras.
There are so many vehicles in the game, will we able to drive them?
Honestly screw Ubisoft. Screw any company that cuts content from games and plans to sell it as DLC. Screw 'em
So I've only been to NY once but i seem to recall midtown being a pretty confined area. Will they let you go into most of the buildings?
To be fair, cutting things from a game is completely normal and has always been so. The only difference in more recent times is that people expect loads of info and updates for the years running up to launch. That means we all know what has and hasn't been cut or changed. Before people didn't know what they were getting at all outside of one or two previews in a usually very biased article in the official magazine.
My entire knowledge of FFVII going into it was from a single preview in the Official Playstation Magazine. It had about 7 screenshots at best, a couple were non-representative pre-rendered stuff (e.g. those character pics they did) and one of which was Cloud standing on a toilet in a cubicle. "Wow, a man standing on a toilet seat and staring at the ceiling, I must get this amazing game" is exactly what I didn't think.
@chiptoon Well "raw size" can be deceptive. Fallout 4 feels like a big game but you can run from one corner to the diagonally opposite one in about 7 minutes (with infinite sprint). If you've ever played WoW, you'll know how strange it is when you first get the ability to fly and then realise that those 40 hours you spent moving around a few zones can now be condensed into about 5 minutes.
I just looked at a map of Midtown Manhattan and did a very rough calculation. It seems to be 25km2. That's slightly larger than Skyrim.
@Matroska Interesting. I don't play many open world games, some earlier ones like Infamous really turned me off. But I'm heavily into Xenoblade Chronicles X right now, so my idea of a big map might be a little skewed
@WanderingBullet
nope, you can't even re-open the doors for cover
@CD456 looks incredible. Best looking turd I've seen. I think this will be a huge disappointment.
@Anchorsam_9 Thank you for your avatar. It reminded me that a much better game exists. Not disappointed. My wallet is happier.
@Matroska I think Bethesda may be starting a new trend for open worlds. From this gen onwards i believe open worlds will be more densely packed.
From what I have seen, the map reminds me a lot of Arkham City. Its a big 'U' shape with the middle of that 'U' being the Dark Zone.
As it stands at the moment, its not a pre-order or day 1 purchase. It has some things I like but more that I have concerns over. The visual look doesn't look a good as I first thought although that's not a major issue. I know that as a game develops and grows, it may need to have its visual presentation scaled back a bit. What does concern me though is that the 'story' seems lacking and the game-play repetitive too. Destiny has different environments and enemies but this is set in one place with just human enemies. The game-play looks like it will be a case of clear out enemies then move to the next area and repeat with a bit of scavenging for gear en-route.Car doors are not 'closed' but more you bump into them to shut them but can't open them for cover - it just seems pointless!
I don't like the idea that your 'friends' can grief you in the Dark Zone either Being a Ubisoft game also doesn't bode well with me.
This smells a little like destiny but won't jump to conclusions but I'm not buying the game either until I try it for a while.
Buying Destiny (no DLC) was a huge waste of money for me. if you didn't pay for DLC you were locked out the game basically. I hope that this isn't the case with this game.
@Shellcore That's my view these days and with Amazon etc letting you pre-order for free and with no penalties to cancel before the release date then I'm all for abusing the system they are putting in place to get a free go at playing and see if it's worthwhile forking out my hard earned for it.
I've it pre-ordered on Amazon but I'll deffo not be buying from them as I've my whole PS4 collection on digital this generation so I'll be buying from PSN if I like the game. It's worth a few clicks to get a beta code. deffo.
And just watch... they'll charge 20 bucks to access the area that used to be in the game too. I'm still cautiously interested in the game but dang, it's pretty ballsy to admit that you are removing content from the game that was previously playable, and then admit that you'll probably add it in again later.
@Phillendon I would recommend starting with Rainbow Six 3 Gold on steam(since you can't find Rogue Spear that works on Windows 10), as it's the epitome of what made the original games great. The current games are nothing like the originals (though Siege certainly does a good job). I'm looking forward to The Division, but I know it won't be like the originals so I'm not expecting it. What made Tom Clancy games special was the realism and tactical aspect, and that's why I'd recommend starting with R6 3.
I don't see why they would cut it out from the game (Other than Brooklyn being crap, jk), but unfortunately I can see them using it as DLC. yippee.
I'd like to see some actual reasons for this, but since Ubi is slogging along lately, I'm suspecting the worst.
So I have cancelled my pre order, if this is anything like Destiny I know in a years time I will be able to pick the base game and ALL DLC up for £25!! Till then I shall happily carry on with Rainbow/FIFA
@Phillendon The Tom Clancy games aren't connected by story, only be the tactical type of gameplay reminiscent of Tom Clancy's novels/movies. And not all of them are FPS. Splinter Cell, which is its own story is a third-person stealth game. Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon are mostly FPS. The Division is an entirely new property that is a third-person shooter. The Tactical is the big part. It's not anything twitchy like Call of Duty. It's a lot slower and all about planning, more so for the older titles.
@Anchorsam_9 It seems like they don't have enough time to complete it, unless they want to delay a game again that was supposed to come out in 2014. If they finish it months after release and sell it, I don't see the problem in that. However, if it's something like only two months, then it's a scam.
@FullbringIchigo That's a shame cause if the maps are big the traveling aspect of the game could get tedious unless they implement some sort of fast-travel feature.
When they say 1 to 1 re-creation do they mean they replicated Manhattan on a 1 to 1 scale? If so, that is a huge map, and releasing a 1 to 1 scale New York City as an online game would be a little empty probably.
@Phillendon Some of the "Clancy's" games are pretty special. Most are just very well crafted games: great gameplay and with a lot of attention for detail for their time.
I'd advise: wait for the reviews of The Divison (as this game isn't without controversy) and pick it up if it's good enough. And then, if you enjoyed the game, you can always decide on picking up on some of the classic Tom Clancy's afterwards: Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, Rainbow Six Vegas.
@Phillendon The Best "Clancy" game to my knowledge and taste is the first Rainbow Six Vegas. This was extra-ordinary. And what made the Clancy games awesome for me is the realism they convey. At least Vegas does. Weapons, Modes, AI - everything top notch. I'm also not a fan of what I'm seeing about The Division...
@Gamer83 What else really?
I hope Far Cry Primal is something "new" and fresh but I also doubt it. They always aim SO HIGH (and promote it like that) and then SO underdeliver.
This is WatchDogs all over again!
@Phillendon Tom Clancy is an author that Ubisoft have a licensing deal with to use his name, and the name and characters and settings from his books. Despite this 99% of their games have little to do with anything in the books, and no similarity between them. The games vary hugely in quality, so the answer to your question "What makes Tom Clancy so special" is nothing in particular lol. Some of the games are great but because of the specific design choices made in that game, not because of the Tom Clancy series if that makes sense. You're better off researching the games individually and seeing which ones you want as opposed to buying all of them. Splinter Cell and Rainbox Six, for example have zero in common and even within those series the games vary wildly. Division will be no different and a completely new experience pretty much.
@WanderingBullet it might have a fast travel system
AngryJoe put a video on youtube where he played it with the developers and got quite a bit of info about the game out of them

Way to milk a game. Ubisoft following in EAs footsteps.
Ubisoft:Don't believe their lies.
Ubi are worse than EA at this point.
@FullbringIchigo Thanks for the link. The gameplay looks decent and it'll probably be more fun if you can get 3 other mates to join in. I wonder if the enemy healths are scaled down when you play solo.
@WanderingBullet apparently enemy numbers and health will be lower on single player
@FullbringIchigo That's good to know. Thanks for the info, man.
Thanks Ubisoft for giving us this "great" news! (Doesn't ultimately mean anything but this isn't good news)
@Scollurio
Far Cry Primal probably won't provide much in the way of new or creative, but I do think at the very least it'll be a good game. That's the only series Ubisoft has these days where a game comes out and I expect good things.
