We're not sure about other countries, but Sony's marketing the absolute crap out of Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection here in the UK. Considering that great games like Until Dawn and to a lesser degree Bloodborne got shorter shift, it's been a surprise to see Naughty Dog's series appear during commercials for virtually every major sporting event. But this may be because the Japanese giant sees the PlayStation 4 package as a system seller.
"It certainly has the power to be a system seller this Christmas," PlayStation UK product manager Joe Palmer told MCV. "It offers fantastic value as a gifting proposition, giving newcomers the chance to pick up a PS4 with three great games at a very competitive price. PlayStation's audience base has also changed significantly since the original Uncharted games were released, so there's a huge number of gamers looking to buy a PS4 who may never have played these games before."
We recently saw a statistic suggesting that 80 per cent of current PS4 owners have not played an Uncharted game, so clearly the platform holder's investing in the brand with its current advertising blitz. "We have strong expectations for the success of this title," Palmer continued. "This is genuinely something that players want in anticipation of the launch of Uncharted 4: A Thief's End in March 2016."
The title's launching today in North America and the UK, where it's being accompanied by some pricing promotions. Those of you in the United States can pick up the game alongside a PS4 for $349.99, while a similar bundle will be available in the UK for £299.99. Good offers, then, and great games – but will you be using this compilation as an excuse to jump in, or are you still waiting for greatness to arrive? Translation - "What else we got?"
I think the bundle is a little bit chicken or egg, people looking to buy a PS4 this holiday will probably buy more of this bundle than COD or Star Wars, but the # of PS4 they sell would probably have been the same amount without Uncharted. So it may look like Uncharted is helping sell PS4, but PS4 may actually be helping to sell Uncharted which is just along for the $349 ride.
Still hope I get a U4 bundle for $349 in March.
We'll probably see the same thing happening as what we've seen with the first Uncharted on the PS3 back in the day: because there weren't really any exclusives to speak of at the time, every PS3 owner clung onto Uncharted and made it a commercial succes. The series went on to become above average and worthy of the sales numbers, but I don't think the first Uncharted would've been really successful as a 3rd party title.
Now the situation is even slightly different with the PS4 being far more popular than the PS3 was at the time and all these people want to justify their purchase. What better way to do that than with a remastered collection of 2 excellent games and another one to show its humble beginnings??
I believe this game won't move consoles as much as this console will move the game. The PS4 is so popular, especially in Europe, that it's hard to buy a One at the moment even with it's arguably better fall line up. When your friends, family or colleagues have a PS4, the PS4 shelves in stores are twice as large and everyone talks fondly of the console, you don't go out and just buy a One because you like Halo...you just take the PS4 with Uncharted and tell yourself you like those types of games from now on
Wish this England match would hurry up so I can stick the game on.
@rjejr The new Tales of Zesteria, Dragon Quest Heroes are the 2 games i getting in a week.
I just started Drake's Fortune and falling in love with the series all over again.
@Splat did the same today, its amazing how after all these years i still remember where some treasures are.
"Marketing the absolute crap" is slightly over the top. I've seen one bus stop poster, and the two different adverts three, maybe four times each in the last week or so. Considering I've been ill and done not much other than watch TV the last five days that's about average. Seen the adverts for Walking Dead, the Suffragettes film, Vodafone and Nivea a lot, lot more. Saw the Splatoon ads more than that! Wouldn't it have been nice though if Sony had put in any sort of effort whatsoever with Tearaway?
@rastamadeus But why? Because the small minority in the Internet thinks it deserves to be heavily advertised and hailed for the spectacle it is? I agree it is a good game, but do you really think it would have ever been a huge multi million seller? Even with ads on TV and billboards, tear away would still not sell like some of us would have liked. A game like Tear away may have been a big seller on a Nintendo console, simply because they are seen as the "kids" console, but never on the ps4. Sony knew this, they knew it would make a decent little profit and that's about it, so why waste the ad money? Seems smart to me.
Those of us that post comments on video game sites and research small, obscure games that never get much publicity, we are rewarded with finding the gems amongst the trash heap of games. Expecting these niche games to become household names, or expecting the dynamic of the gaming industry and customer trends to change is only wishful thinking.
Ofcourse the Uncharted Trilogy is a system seller. There is nothing to match it or The Last Of Us on the xbox consoles. Tomb Raider comes close but nowhere near close enough. I'm playing the first game right now on PS4 and even though I've already played the games on PS3, I'm loving every second. It feels fresh and plays like a dream with awesome graphics.
The compressed Youtube comparison videos make the two versions look similar, but when you see the PS4 version in the flesh, the clarity of the graphics, lighting and texture work is outstanding. All gamers should be enjoying this. If you're not on PS4 you're on the wrong console because this is incredible value for money. Three of the best games ever made for £40, remastered in epic quality.
80% percent of PS4 gamers are in for one hell of a ride if they have not played them. I'm in for one hell of a ride and I've already played them. As I always say, it's a great time to be gamer if you're on PS4. Even more so now.
I cannot believe Sony is going to kill the series off with the fourth game. Crazy.
