It's not been a great day for Konami, with Japanese newspaper Nikkei reporting some pretty nasty things about its corporate culture. The company may as well get all of the bad news out in one go, then: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain's multiplayer mode won't go online until 6th October.
While you'll get the competitive component with all copies of the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 game, it sounds like Konami's taking a little extra time to get the squad-based suite running smoothly. Grand Theft Auto V employed a similar rollout model, of course, so it's not the end of the world – and it will at least give you ample opportunity to complete the single player campaign.
For those out of the loop, the mode's being developed by Kojima Productions Los Angeles – or, er, Konami Los Angeles Studio as its now known. Despite the online focus, however, the extra will maintain the series' eye for silliness, with toy dogs and all manner of other ridiculous implements on display in its debut trailer.

I'm honestly surprised they didn't go ahead and cancel the online component out of spite for Kojima and his production team.
I like this model as demonstrated by gta v. But that was arguably the best openworld game ever.
Ah well the single player will keep me more than occupied till then, I prefer to wait then get something half baked.
I probably won't buy it then, for now. MGO was the bigger draw for me, I will wait and see what happens with that.
@themcnoisy I also think this is a good model, not really that bothered about the online part but will still check it out
I wasn't going to touch it until I completely beat single-player anyway, so I'm okay with this.
Couldn't care less. The online presumably isn't Canon and just you wait, it's going to be riddled with microtransactions. Konami want every penny they can get out of us now, so prepare for a gouging.
Long as the single player is good I'm happy.
I'm not too bothered honestly, the single player campaign is by far my favorite part of the MGS games anyway. Though, if the multiplayer is similar to Peace Walker's, I'm quite excited for it.
Really want to try this game, but the last one I played was metal gear solid on psone. How many have there been since then, 10? I jest, but seriously is this something you can just pick up and it has an independent story like witcher 3, or does it require knowledge from previous entries? Either way looks great but I am secretly happy Kojima will be moving on, Konami doesn't deserve him.
Do not say such things, @JesWood13! Say not so! 😰
I think I genuinely liked 4's MGO better than any other interactive gaming experience I've ever had. More than GoldenEye64, CS, MarioKart, any game co-op, and even StarCraft over battle.net dial-up. I cried when they patched MGS4 (you mean I have to 100% this game YET AGAIN??) and can only just barely wait for 5's now lol
@Johnnycide @SonyInfinity Did you not play MGS Ground Zero? It was free last month or the month previous to last.
If you haven't played it I highly recommend you do, as it'll give you an idea of what to expect from the upcoming Phantom Pain. Im not 100% but I think it gives you some of the back story from the series, though how much I don't know. I also think its a prolog to Phantom Pain too.
I myself won't be picking up MGS Phantom Pain on release as I still have The Witcher 3 along with the upcoming October dlc, Batman AK, Elder Scrolls Online to finish.
Mad Max is also due out around the same time as MGS PP and from what I have seen looks pretty good. Their is one game due out in either August or September which I will be getting, and thats SOMA. I've been waiting for SOMA since Amnesia announced it back in 2013.
Once I've finished all the games I mentioned above and Fallout 4, then I will give MGS phantom Pain its own place on my gaming shelf. In regards to MGS Online, im not bothered. I prefer the single player experience in my games. Besides, like @Johnnycide said, it will probably be full of microtransactions knowing Konami.
I read somewhere (may have been Push Square) that the reason Konami got rid of Kojima was because he was spending to much money on MGS PP trying to make it the best he possibly could as this was going to be his last MGS game. They couldn't afford him anymore and as such they will probably try and squeeze every penny out of us through MGS Online and microtransactions.
@SonyInfinity I'd recommend playing mgs hd collection first. The story arc goes mgs3, mgs peace walker, mgs ground zeroes, mgs phantom pain. This is effectively a prequel to metal gear solid.
To be honest i am only interested in single player.
Although I'd be lying to say I'm not disappointed, this isn't the end of the world for me. Still getting this day 1, but with a week off work I imagine me and my mates will be done with the story within a few days. Oh well, just gives me more time after that to try and finish the Witcher!
Lol cancelled my pre order i'm gunna get it off ebay now what's the point in pre ordering if it's not online on day one i'll get it a few weeks after release probabaly alot cheaper than I would of paid now, still looking forward to it like, but i've alway's been more excited for Seige tbh.
