There's not a single person here at Push Square Towers that doesn't at least appreciate the Metal Gear Solid series, which is a testament to the property's quality seeing as we rarely ever agree. As good as the franchise is, though, we don't think that it could ever be described as fictionally consistent – so it's fortunate that a new website has been created to timeline the story in layman's terms.
Launched on the eve of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, this simplistic guide breaks down the events of each mainline game, covering all of the major narrative beats so that you know exactly what's going on. It even excludes events from the franchise's forthcoming sequel, and has been translated into several different languages. Give it a look if you're planning on picking up next week's big release.

The MG Database is probably the best source of reference I've seen. It was available as a DL on PS3 as an add-on for MGS4. Dunno if it's still available but, probably worth a look. After checking this site, it would appear they just copy and pasted the timeline from the MG Database actually..
lol yeah, beat 4 and you'll get every piece of the puzzle
I've played the games through many times and read through to lore often enough, but I still forget big chunks of what's gone on. Always good fun to have another read through!
@Fenriswolf- the database is very good, although it doesn't have anything on Peace Walker since it wasn't out yet. Which is unfortunate, cause that one seems to have the biggest connection to MGSV.
@DrClayman Yea that's right, been a while since I read through it! Haha I should probably go back and get refreshed soon!
