We want to believe, but we're finding it difficult. It's now August, and barring a trailer and an official English website, we don't really have any evidence that Persona 5 is actually releasing this year in North America - or even Japan, for that matter.
But in an interview with God is a Geek, the always enthusiastic John Hardin, Atlus USA's PR manager, still insists that the game's arriving on Western shores in 2015. "The only thing I can confirm for Persona 5 is 2015," he told the publication.
On a slightly different note, Hardin also comments on a European launch, stating that "we are trying to get publishers locked in for our titles in EU and will announce things when they are locked in," adding: "We are very aware of what happens when we make premature announcements for Europe." But hey, at least it's coming, right?
Persona 5 will undoubtedly have a big showing at this year's Tokyo Game Show, so if it's going to at least get a Japanese release date, the nation's biggest gaming expo will be the place to reveal it. That said, we wouldn't be at all surprised if the title's TGS trailer didn't come with a 'launching 2016' message at the end of it.
Do you think that the super stylish role-playing game will release by the end of the year, or does it just not seem feasible? Don your mask and stealth through the shadows of the comments section below.

Boooooo. Give me the game. LIKE NOW.
Can't wait. Although being in Europe, I'll have to. Bugger.
Oh yeah, they need to translate it into French and crap probably. Spanish and German too perhaps. I hate living in Europe sometimes. We Swedes are forced to learn English while nobody else wants to in other countries.
Until recently I found out via a comment here that this one also hits on PS3.
If this releases this year, there are just 3 months left to build hype for it for Black Friday, so I find it doubtful.
@Riririn No one is forcing you. It's completely optional to learn English or not.
No need to insult anyone - Robert
It really needs to come out this year. I'd be more upset about a 2016 release if Fallout 4 wasn't coming out. A delay would give me more time to explore that world
So nice to be screwed over yet again, no I will be importing it.
Not waiting.
I want to believe but it's not even got a japan release date.
It really annoys me how us Brits have to wait for ages for games just so they can translate them into French, German, Italian and Spanish as well. Why can't we (plus Australia and New Zealand) get the game alongside the US, then mainland Europe gets it when their translation is done? For that matter, the vast majority of people under a certain age (and many above) speak fluent English in mainland Europe anyway, at least in the countries covered by the aforementioned languages. Maybe they could release specific translations as DLC later. I dunno, this predictable delay thing just annoys me.
It's a vicious circle because many people will just import the US version thus making it seem more successful in the US than it really is and, later, less successful in EU than it really is. Of course, this is compounded by the fact that even including the fee for someone to fly it over in an aeroplane, it's still usually cheaper than buying it from the UK anyway (even worse for our AU and NZ cousins).
Being in the US, I'm hoping it does reach us in 2015, but there hasn't been much shown since earlier this year so unless TGS has as big splash, I don't see it being released by end of year for the US (maybe Japan). As much as I enjoy Persona 4 and the whole universe/franchise, after P4D, I'm ready to move on from the setting/characters.
@sinalefa
I'm a lot more hyped for this after watching gameplay of Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem. From what I've been told they're VERY similar, and SMT x FE looks absolutely amazing so naturally that's translating to Persona 5.
I'd honestly be fine with waiting until 2016. There's too many RPGs coming out this year that I'm interested in getting. (Fallout 4, Tales of Zestiria, Xenoblade Chronicles X, & maybe Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced) Not only that, but there's expansions on the way for Witcher 3, Bloodborne's expansion, and then the release of MGS5, which isn't an RPG, but it's about as massive as an RPG, so yeah....
I hope he's telling the truth. I need this game.
The lack of even a Japanese release date and John Hardin saying "All I can say is 2015" makes it sound like there is a concrete date all lined up but they're holding off on it until TGS (or another event, I've lost track of them). Like, Hardin knows it'll be December 12th or whatever but he's not allowed to say. Let's put it this way, if you're certain that it'll come out in 2015, that means that you know the date. You can't be certain it'll come out within the next 3.5 months without at least knowing the month, if not the week or day.
I'll let you in on something a member of Atlus told me, Atlus wants this game to surprise us, and they're afraid that if they put out any more trailers then things will become spoiled.
I already heard about the 2015 release. We get it. JUST GIVE US A MONTH AND DAY!!!

All I ask is a month and day, is that too much to ask?
@SegaBlueSky import?
It does seem a trifle strange that a game that will be translated into English for the American market cannot be sold in England whose native language is English. And have you ever been to Europe or spoken to a European. A lot of them can speak perfect English as well.
As much as I love the games from Atlus there is something a bit lacking in how they handle their releases.
Still looking forward to this release.
@GCPlugs great idea, gonna import from America if the European release is miles away.
Good, I was beginning to get worried whether we were going to get it this year or not. Supposedly the NA and JP release dates are virtually the same, which is awesome. The wait for EO2U after it dropped in JP was pretty painful for me.
Sucks that our European brothers and sisters will have to wait unless their importing though.
@JaxonH This. Everyone has been really down on SMTxFE from what I've seen. In mean, nobody's played it yet so that seems a little premature to me. But I know I'll certainly be playing it on release day.
@battleshipharuna It isn't. It's required to graduate at all in Sweden. Not that you actually have to try to learn. It's easy. Yet other countries refuse and demand games in their own language. There's no way I'm waiting, if it's region free like usual I'm importing it.
@john_c It really depends where you go. French people are famous to "hate" English. The ones I talked to ignored the classes on purpose. But no that's not how things work. UK is part of the PAL region so they'll get the same game as everybody else there. That means waiting until it's translated into all these billion different languages unless publisher choose only to release it in one language. And that rarely happens these days. It's always multi. It's a good thing they kept the PS4 region free.
I was scared it would get delayed!
Hope the Japanese release will be this year. i will get the Japanese version.
Unless Atlus is going for a Christmas release with Persona 5, I don't see how it could possibly release this year.
If it does, though, I'll be getting Xenoblade Chronicles X and Persona 5 in roughly the same timeframe.
God help me.
