As expected, it seems as though Square Enix is going to announce Dragon Quest XI on the 28th July during a Japanese presentation. The next instalment in Japan's favourite role-playing franchise was teased in a recent issue of Jump Magazine, and now Wall Street Journal reporter Takashi Mochizuki has reinforced expectations via a tweet.
According to the social media post, the publisher's invite to the event mentions "the first main Dragon Quest title in three years". It all sounds pretty definitive for now, then, but there's still no mention of what platforms the upcoming title will release on. As we've mentioned before, though, series creator Yuji Hori has previously stated that the next main instalment in the series will be an offline home console title, and as such, we reckon that the PlayStation 4 fits the bill, especially when you consider how closely Square Enix and Sony seem to be working - at least in Japan.

knowing Square and what they are doing with the main Dragon Quest games lately it will probably be on Android
I would LOVE to see DQXI on PS4! VIII was one of my favorite games on PS2. Both this series & SMT/Persona skipped the PS3. It'd make a great double - Persona 5 & this!

It's not gonna be a mobile game, and probably not a 3DS game either. They already said they wanted to bring the next DQ game to consoles and that it wouldn't be online only.
@BLPs It most certainly will not be for Xbox. That system is dead in Japan & considering how Japanese centric the series is there is no reason for it to be on a dead console. Considering how dominating the PS4 is worldwide & Shuhei Yoshida's comments on how they're trying to reinvigorate the console market in Japan there is little left for speculation.
No matter what console this comes to, I'll be getting this day 1!! Dragon Quest is my favorite RPG series, so I'm pretty stoked.
As far as odds go, I'm betting on PS4. If so, this and wattam will make me get one this year
WiiU is next in line I'm guessing, since Nintendo has a great history with the DQ games, and it's still a reasonably popular console in Japan.
As for XB1, I see almost a 0% chance, unless it is a pure multiplat release. There is no way that SE would waste one of its biggest franchises on a console that sells next to nothing in its most profitable country.
All my opinion though, and like I said, I'm happy as long as it gets a USA release. I've really enjoyed the DS/3DS releases, but I'm so happy to play it on the tv once more. Welcome back, DQ!
Dragon Quest XI developed by Level-5 for the PS4 is all I need to hear next week.
As long as they don't 'cater for the west' and make it an action RPG over its traditional turn based gameplay.
Just to repeat what I said the last time this was in an article, the Wii U actually has about 1 million more units sold in Japan. DQ has always released on the console with the largest install base in Japan, although it does also tend to then end up everywhere else anyway (not 100% sure but I think IX is the only one that is still only available on its original platform). However, even Nintendo are trying to take focus away from the Wii U and are delaying the next Zelda so it doesn't just sink on that console and can instead really boost the NX.
Thing is, even if every single PS4 owner (or Wii U owner if it was released on there) bought DQXI, it would still be the worst selling DQ in history. The PS3 is actually the safest bet by far, combining having a large install base in Japan with being a home console and still being supported (unlike the Wii). Yet, as I said, they can't keep playing it safe by putting everything on the PS3; they really need to bite the bullet at one point and just go for PS4 alone so Japanese gamers will actually feel encouraged to move on.
@ApostateMage They won't. They wanted to make DQIX with a real-time battle system but the Japanese fans were having none of it. Even the change that we did get in the end, that people don't just stand in rigid lines in battle and move around dynamically, was very controversial. It was one of the elements, the other being the fairy that was based on a Ganguro girl, that led to it being review bombed on Amazon Japan and other sites.
Watch the western localization on this game never to make it on PS3 in the U.S. and U.K. :/
