In the words of Geralt of Rivia: not bad. Unsurprisingly marking CD Projekt Red's most successful release, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt sold four million copies during its first two weeks on the market.
The game's success may come as a bit of a shock to some, considering that the role-playing release perhaps isn't as mainstream as other blockbuster titles, but with a solid marketing campaign and more than a few incredibly positive reviews, the open world adventure has done very well for itself indeed.
The news comes via an open letter from the developer's co-founder, Martin Iwinski. In it, he wrote that "4 million RPG fans spending their hard-earned money on our game is a sign that we did something right, and you can be sure that we'll harness all that positive energy and make the upcoming expansions worthy of the grand adventure that you're telling us Wild Hunt already is!"
We reckon that Wild Hunt's success is a good sign, given that the title wasn't swamped in pre-order bonuses and day one downloadable content - not to mention that the Polish studio is still pumping out free DLC every week, too. They should have told us where the game sold most. PC, PS4, or Xbone
@Wesker Does it matter?
Anyway, I'm really tempted.
@Wesker All we know is that it sold better on PS4 over Xbox One here in the UK. We'll know about the US once the NPD comes out at some point next week.
I can see myself playinh this for a very long time. I am doing a story run at the minute and will be doing my death march run after. Played around 130 hours since launch so far!
@WebHead No. But it would be interesting if a previously PC-based developer with a co-marketing agreement with Microsoft, sold the most on PlayStation.
Crushes everything else in PS4. Shame about the last minute season pass but it'll be worth it no doubt.
Everyone I know was raving about this game. I had to buy it. Barely even started it and I can tell I'm gonna love it
Btw, was this game gonna be published by Bandai Namco at one time, like in the pic in the top right? My copy has WB Games on it.
@audiobrainiac It was published by Bandai Namco in Europe, Warner Bros. in North America.
Awesome...
Well deserved sales from a solid, honest studio. I think everyone knew this would sell well. So yeah, well done CDPR.
@Wesker, my money's on the PS4, so to speak. Not that it matters, well deserved success of an excellent game (I'm taking my time with it).
Devil survivor 2 has my time for now but I will probably be able to start witcher 3 by the time all the dlc's have come out.
Well deserved. Love it so far.
Oh, but it's multiplat. That probably helped it tons. I wonder how many people bought a PS4 to play it.
Awesome game. I don't think I will be playing anything else for a while.... Every time I plan on progressing with the story I get sidetracked by the awesome side quests and hunting down those bloody "?"s!
@Riririn I know I did.
Seriously pleased about this. The team seem to have a real passion for their work and it feels as though they had a huge say in how it was published. They threw in a thank you note, a soundtrack, stickers a map and...a manual! Also, through in the fact it has a unique atmosphere of it's own and it only becomes easier to see why it's doing so well. Oh, and free DLC. Take note everyone, THIS is how you release a Triple A title.
Although it might be because you can have sex on a unicorn.
Would love it but just don't have the time to give it , I haven't even got kids. Decided to avoid these type of games this generation. Ive a cupboard full of Fallouts ,GTA's, Red Dead , Far Crys , Red Factions ,Skyrim ,Bioshocks,Dragon's Dogmas etc etc, all about 30% completed. Have still to even install MGS on the PS3 ! . @Mrskinner how the heck have you found 130 hours to play The Witcher ?!! I get home from work have my dinner then have at most 2 hours to game a night , don't ever become a Taxi Driver.
