Time to take out your mouth guard and chomp down on a tasty rumour regarding Rise of the Tomb Raider: the Xbox exclusive will apparently release on the PlayStation 4 in Q4 2016. This tidbit comes courtesy of YouTube channel The Know, which has a shaky track record right now; the account successfully leaked Dark Souls III, but did also peddle that bogus Silent Hills report. There is some semblance of sense to this story, though.
Citing a document from an anonymous source, the embedded video explains that Square Enix is aiming to announce the PS4 version of the action adventure game in mid-2016, with a roll-out due during the holidays. Apparently, it's expecting some kind of backlash, and it intends to sell the title for the discounted price of $40 in order to appease the more angry among you. Considering that the Xbox version will probably cost half that by then, we're not sure whether it'll work.
And we're also not entirely convinced that this is true in the first place. Microsoft has been keen to describe this game as an exclusive for holiday 2015, which leads us to believe that it's got a much shorter stranglehold on the sequel than a year. Moreover, is Square Enix really going to put this out against all of the big hitters that will inevitably be announced for next Christmas? It's already going to get slaughtered by Fallout 4 this year as it is.
Personally, we reckon that the PS4 version will be out by next summer – but feel free to share your thoughts on this sorry saga in the comments section below.

I rather the game release sooner for full price, the previous game was definitely worth every penny. And it is said this game is even better since it is more like the older games which i grew up with.
@Sonicfan11589 I'm kinda with you to be honest. I think summer would be the perfect time for it, personally. There's less stuff coming out, so it should get a second wind. Just toss in a few DLC costumes/weapons/etc and it'll be gravy.
I hope it will be released before the 4th Q. Am a fan of this game since the first Tomb Raider released, it always keep me hyped and it is obvious that this sequel visuals and the game play will be great.
@get2sammyb Yeah I think Square is really regretting selling out now.
meh, i really dont care at this point and i doubt many will buy it if its that far away. there are plenty of better games coming to ps4 this year and through-out 2016 that this game will become a shadow on ps4 when it releases. talking of shadows, persona 5 is all the ps4 needs this year and its looking brilliant.
Yeah......but no. I refuse to support this title now.
With Bungie pulling a double whammy this week and various others selling out and cashing in, I'd rather support the last 'true' few. CDPR get my vote. DICE have kind of turned it around to what they used to be like, and those that still realize that gamers pay their wage on the promise of a good job. Not shady money grubbers who've become a shadow, a spectre left after their parasitic hosts have drained them of all morals, honesty and decency.
Gamers have become sheep. Just ask the executive from Bethesda who couldn't believe the whole Fallout 4/Pip-Boy fiasco. Even he gasped at a whole new level of stupid.
Well, I for one, am very interested. The last game amazed me and I have no doubt this will too. It's a shame it will take so long to be available on PS4, but since a PS4 version wasn't (isn't?) even a sure thing yet, I'm regarding this as good news. Should it comes, I'm buying!
I'll happily pay €40 for this
Personally this game is much more likely to get purchased over Fallout 4 as I prefer the more focussed story telling and really enjoyed the reboot. With other games like Star Wars: Battlefront and CoD: BO3 more likely to be occupying my MP and co-op gaming and BF in particular lacking a campaign, I am more likely to want Tomb Raider for that Single Player fix - especially as Uncharted isn't out until 2016.
No doubt I will be playing the Witcher 3 and its expansions too for that RPG (although RotTR does have some RPG elements to it). Fallout 4 for me is more likely to be a purchase for when gaming is going through a 'dry' patch as I can and will want to spend longer periods of time exploring and completing the many quests. Tomb Raider I think will be better for that Single Player game to play before jumping into some co-op/MP when friends come online and jumping back into again afterwards.
@JasonBeckerFan I don't believe for one second that CDPR are giving you DLC that wasn't in the game prior. I feel that most (if not all) was in the game but they took it out as a PR exercise. At most maybe a few were created afterwards - like the different 'skins', but I can't believe they put the whole treasure hunt and quests in afterwards - the way they work, the areas they are in etc leads me to believe they were there before.
I certainly wouldn't 'boycott' a game because of them signing a deal to get money to make a game - why should I lose out on that experience? I am fortunate to own both consoles now and as a result can buy games based on 'exclusives' timed or otherwise and whilst I don't agree with the practice, I am not going to cut off my nose to spite my face.
The way the reboot ended ha made my desire to play a sequel even greater - part of the reason I feel for those on PS but do you feel sorry for XB owners not having SF5 at all or even Shenmue 3 if/when that comes out - after all that was a 'Dreamcast' game not a Playstation one.
I take it then you won't be buying Fallout 4, Rainbow Six Seige or the Division because they have Xbox links (extra content, early DLC/Mods)?
I find this to be sounding bogus too, my guess is that they'll do a "complete edition" for the full $60 when they do release it on ps4. Haven't heard of any dlc yet but uh, this is 2015
If it ever happens, it will be too late for most PS4 owners to give a damn. Anyway, just more talk about a game that as of right now should be as relevant to PS gamers as Uncharted is to Xbox gamers. If this game does come out on PS4 at some point, great, lets have 4 articles in two weeks, until then I feel like PS specific websites should move on.
Rooster Teeth isn't my first choice for gaming news, so I'm not putting my stock in that rumor. Even if it is true, Uncharted 4 will already be out, and even with a lowered price Playstation fans may not care.
I think the game looks great, maybe I'll get it later on, but the PR and whatever has been absolutely stupid to follow.
I'm not angry, and I'll buy.
If it turns out to be true, its a stupid move. Uncharted will release months earlier and no doubt blow everyone away, then Tomb Raider will fall flat. I was a big fan of the old Tomb Raiders and I've always been a PS user, disappointing that they decided to screw us over after so long.
Hell, at that rate I might just have an Xbox One by then. Square Enix sure did screw Playstation owners on this one.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAH no, piss off SellOutEnix and CD because I'm done with Tomb Raider.
So glad MS has destroyed yet ANOTHER childhood series I adored.
Tomb Raider is a timed exclusive not exclusive, & it will more & likely be a six month deal & by that time there are a lot of other better games out.
It's not an xbox exclusive.
I think it will be released on ps4 close to a year after the xbox release.
Eh.... this is just sad. Tomb Raider always was playstation thing for me. And not just for me, sales of this franchise is always better on sony machines. So, it's all just sad and stupid. And considering that it will have better graphics and all dlcs on ps4 ... Eh....
I also think that it is 6 month exclusive at most. But hope for three moonth =).
But I really like this series for T and A... So I'll buy it anyway. Not sure about big crowd. Sales can be really disappointing for SE.
It's going to be difficult for them now on ps4, it either gets lost in the shuffle of the big hitters just before Christmas especially as it would be a year old and those who really care would probably have played it. Or release it earlier and potentially go up against Uncharted and I don't see it winning that particular battle.
Also timed exclusives are a terrible idea and bad for gaming in general, I understand third party exclusives to a point when made in conjunction with the platform holder but a franchise that has always been multiplatform and made famous by Playstation is just ridiculous. It would make some sense if it was the other way round considering it's history and the considerably larger user base, though I still wouldn't agree with it
I have to be honest, I don't mind timed exclusives if there on the system I have, but in reality, those timed exclusive deals can really stab developers in the back. If this game gets overshadowed on the PS4, I doubt the money they made from Microsoft was even worth the timed exclusive deal. This means that Microsoft would've had to recoupe the potential money loss that the developers would suffer with such a deal. If they accepted the deal from Microsoft and it doesn't come close to recouping that lost money for that time, they just shot themselves in the foot.
I wouldn't buy it for 1p
I've always felt 3rd party developers should never play favorites. Even if it is timed.
Well it looks like I'll be buying it in 2017 then on PS4 when the price comes down in order to financially punish Square Enix and Crystal dynamics for stabbing the loyal Tomb Raider fans in the back by taking a MS corrupt bribe for short term gain.
I still don't get the anger towards MS. Just like Sony and Nintendo have made deals with third parties in the past, MS is doing the same to try and sell its console. I do understand the anger because I'm p*ssed to hell about this myself, but the hostility should be directed to SE and Crystal Dynamics. Looking at all the games SE is funding you can't tell me it couldn't have done the same for Rise of the Tomb Raider. Especially when these a-holes are funding a new Hitman game, when the last one tanked worse than the TR reboot. It didn't have to take the MS handout, but it did. It is what it is. At least at E3 it looked like it was trying to make up for things a little bit, of course there's no telling when the hell any of the JRPGs it announced for PS4 will be out.
I'm torn on this. I have both ps4 and X1. I loved the Tomb Raider reboot and have the definitive edition on PS4. I would love to have this sitting on the shelf next to it with the rest of my ps4 games. However, I am really excited about this and it does release on my birthday. So I might just go ahead and pick it up on Xbox.
@JaredJ
If you want to play it that bad you're just better off just getting it on your birthday. We know for a fact it will be on Xbox One. It may not come to PS4 and even if it does it won't be before Sept. 2016 would be my guess. I can't imagine MS would be stupid enough to pay for a 3-month exclusive on a full game.
@Gamer83 Oh ho trust me, you won't believe how much I've prayed for SellOutEnix and CD to go bankrupt over this.
Don't want it to be that extreme anymore but I want this game to fail hard and for them to lose millions.
@Gamer83 yeah I will probably just go ahead and pick it up on my birthday
@VenomSnake08 its just sh*tty business
@NaughtyOttsel22
SE is throwing a lot of JRPGs behind the PS4 though. Including giving it the FF VII remake first. This was an ill-advised decision but I also have to wonder how much was Crystal Dynamic's decisions as well? I mean, whenever I hear the guy who's in charge of that studio talk about MS, it's a verbal bj and it's disgusting. And all I can think to myself is 'yes, we get it, MS helped you advertise TR: Underworld and the Tomb Raider reboot as Xbox exclusives, but when it was time to show up with the $$$ who were the console gamers there?' Hint... it wasn't the Xbox guys. So I do understand the anger from PS gamers, and there is legit cause for it. People can give me the 'it's business' crap all they want. It's funny how it's ok until the shoe is on the other foot. The anger is real and it's the same legit anger I saw aimed at Capcom when it was announced that not even 3DS would get a port of Resident Evil: Revelations 2 eventhough that sub-series started and sold best there. When dumb people in suits at companies make dumb decisions they get negative feedback and it's well earned.
And I still think this rumor is way off. How many times are these guys right? Once every 100 rumors they bring up?
I hope it'll be a definitive edition to take advantage of the PS4 with all the extras thrown in. Either way I'll probably grab it when it drops if it's good .
@BAMozzy I'm so terribly sorry. How dare I have my opinion.
I've been gaming for just over 30 years, in which I've seen massive changes to practices and the scene as a whole. I love that it (gaming) has woven it's way into the mainstream, and is up there on a par with Hollywood in terms of entertainment. I've played thousands of games, on all platforms, and have been entertained, shocked, moved, thrilled .......and disappointed. I've also felt cheated. This is where I draw the line, because along with the success, there comes the corrupt.
I'm fortunate enough in life that I can buy anything I want. I won't, however, support things I see as unhealthy, and deals like this are unhealthy. They serve to divide. I detest the notion of 'console wars', and whilst competition is a normal business practice, this sort of deal does nothing but harm and serves to segregate. Two minutes on the internet will reveal a world of gamers who are fast becoming fed up with being taken for a ride. Read the Eurogamer interview with The Taken King lead at Bungie, and the SubReddit that resulted. This is what I'm talking about. Underhanded, shady, manipulative practices that are not the doings of artists who wish to create an experience for those who support them by buying that work, but the doings of suits, shareholders and money men who couldn't care less about what crap you buy, as long as you buy it. I can elaborate, but this is long enough to get my point across.
I won't buy Fallout 4 because it will be a buggy mess (I've played all previous entries), but I may pick it up later on when the issues are ironed out. I won't buy The Division because Ubisoft are just plain terrible in supporting their games, and why should they, they've already got your money by then.
The moral is yes, I can buy what I want, but I won't when I feel I'm filling the bank account of a company whose practices I don't agree with. This is one of those situations.
@Gamer83 Well put, sir.
@JasonBeckerFan I have no problems with you and your opinion and will defend your right to have and share it.
I too have been a gamer for nearly 40 years now I too hate these 3rd party exclusive deals - even though I can take full advantage of them by buying on whichever console has the 'exclusive' extras. You are totally right that it does divide gamers and does more harm than good. I am sure the negativity, backlash and verbal insults really does not portray gaming and gamers in a good light.
I do wonder though how much of these decisions are with the creative team. I bet these decisions are made at a managerial level and the heads of the studio who probably know nothing (or very little) about game design - they then tell the development team. Unfortunately the managers are never likely to appear at E3, Gamescom etc but the developers have to defend these decisions.
I have said many times and will continue to say it, 3rd Party Multi-platform games should be equal and release simultaneously. I have no issue with exclusive content unique to each console (like SF4 with unique characters too each platform - I think it was SF4 anyway and different skins in Minecraft). I also think that even timed exclusivity on things like DLC - even if its just a week is wrong. I would rather see Sony/MS etc invest the money on creating their own Exclusives or if they have to pay a 3rd Party studio - its for a new IP not an existing one - especially not one that's a sequel to a game released on other platforms.
That being said though, I am not going to boycott 'Tomb Raider' or any 3rd party game that aligns itself with a specific console. I want to continue to have these experiences, continue to be entertained and thrilled etc. If that means changing my preferred console choice - kind of like buying CoD: BO3 on PS4 when I normally buy for Xbox, so be it! I don't see why I should go without because of deals and practices that I don't agree with. If I did that, I would have very few games to play and most (if not all) of these decisions rarely have anything to do with the creative development team.
@Gamer83 I think it'll be on PS4 within 6 months at the most, eitherway I won't be supporting it now.
After all the headache surrounding this game even as a childhood fan of the series I just don't want to support it at all, pre-owned at best.
@BAMozzy
Same here, I have been playing for 40 years right from the start so I have seen it all, but this is different. We are not talking about an exclusive new IP or an IP that has been a long standing association with a platform and remain exclusive.
We are talking about a game that has been on a particular platform for about 20 years an gained huge success by the support from those gamers. It has become a cultural icon above political capitalism. The game now belongs to the people not the shareholders because they pay the wages.
You cannot mess with that by making corrupt exclusive deals for exclusivity on a competitive platform denying the loyal supporters for a year. It's morally wrong. They crossed a red line and should be punished with a boycott. You can still buy the game later on at a reduced price or second hand. It's not like there is a shortage of games to play in its place. Do not reward them for stabbing you in the back or they will simply do it again.
@NaughtyOttsel22
And I've seen the same opinion as yours expressed elsewhere. I really want to play this game because I loved the reboot and have an Xbox One so no point, imo anyway, skipping it. But there will be some who even if it does come to PS4, won't bother now. And that's a shame, and all could've been avoided if SE and CD weren't idiots. It'd be one thing if the company was in serious danger of bankruptcy and needed the handouts or if it was like back in the PS2 days when one console was outselling the other two by 3 times as much even if you combined the numbers of the competition. Neither is the case here. So, shrewd but smart business move by MS. Not sure it was a smart one from the people making the game, however.
@Gamer83 I have no ill will against MS at all, SellOutEnix and CD however I do.
People moan about SFV but that wouldn't have happened until 2018 at the earliest without Sony's help and Shenmue III is also the same deal, FFVII is only timed due to FFVII having a great history with Sony.
@NaughtyOttsel22
Yeah, the Street Fighter V situation is very different but people don't want to see it that way. That game is much more like the Dead Rising 3 deal. No Microsoft, no Dead Rising 3. So while I don't care for these deals either, they're somewhat more tolerable. I just hope Capcom gets its sh*t together in time for Resident Evil 7 and the next Devil May Cry so gamers on all platforms can enjoy those games from the second they hit the market. That includes the Nintendo crowd if NX is out by then.
@BAMozzy
No it is not like COD switching to PS4. COD has always been on both platforms and released at the same times and always will be. It was lead platform on xbox but that just means it was optimised best for that console. Getting DLC first is neither here nor there as long as both get the main game at the same time.
No corrupt bribe was paid by Sony to encourage the jump to Playstation. COD is loosing its attraction so MS did not want to pay any more corrupt bribes to keep xbox as lead platform, so they dev chose the platform that would best make the games look good as the lead platform. There is no financial incentive to run the game second best now. They are desperate so they need to run it at its best in order to survive and that means make the most powerful consoles the lead platform.
Tomb Raider is morally different. It was exclusive to Playstation at one time, then went multiplat which was a good move. But it is now denying the loyal gamers on the original platform for 12 months in order to take a corrupt bribe. That's nasty and very greedy.
Let's be clear it is corrupt. We have FIFA in the dog house for making and taking corrupt financial payments in order to host the World Cup in a certain country, but we don't see Microsoft in the dog house for making corrupt financial payments to host Tomb Raider on a certain platform. Why is that?
TR has become a cultural standard just like football and belongs to the people, not any particular platform.
@Gamer83 The only reason why I'm extremely against the RoTR deal (bar me being a longtime PC TR fan) is because the game was already confirmed as a multiplat but MS went and bought timed rights because they can't make their own Uncharted clone, shame fanboys will never admit that but even Spencer as good as said it.
@justerthought
I think DLC deals are the most pointless thing ever. As you posted, both consoles get the game the same day and date, all gamers front their $60 for the same game though and that's what they should get. I can't believe that an extra month of access to new maps would swing sales significantly one way or the other for CoD, just like I don't think Scarecrow missions and skins will swing the Batman: Arkham Knight sales unless you're somebody who has access to both consoles and can take advantage of this stuff. These aren't system selling moves though, it's just pointlessly throwing money at third parties and even if it's a drop in the hat to do so, any money exchanging hands for one-month - or less - exclusive DLC is money that could be 100 times better spent going into first party content.
@NaughtyOttsel22
Oh yeah, he clearly stated it. And some people would say if Uncharted 4 were still coming out this holiday the move would make sense because 'PS4 owners would choose Uncharted 4.' Which frankly is a silly excuse to begin with. Sure most of those who only get one game would choose the exclusive but many, in fact I'd say the majority, around the holidays get multiple games so there's a great chance even with Uncharted 4 there, RotTR would've sold well on PS4. But what happened, happened. I just hope in the future not to see more stupid decision making like this.
@Gamer83
I agree. The reason why I say DLC is of no consequence as long as the main game releases simultaneously is because people play the games at different speeds, so some people are not ready for the DLC after a month or two anyway, making the delay have zero effect.
Delaying the main game is very serious, especially this one on this platform for all the reasons I have mentioned. It is designed to make people jump platforms or attract those yet to move to the next gen. PS4 gamers are forced to stay where they are because how could you drop down in quality once you have got use to the PS4 clarity.
@NaughtyOttsel22
Yes that's the point exactly. MS 'pay to deny.' Sony 'pay to create.' The former is negative. The latter is positive. Example: two runners in a race, you can either train hard to beat the other guy or simply smack him in the knee caps with a plank of wood. MS is the matter.
Sony exclusives like Uncharted are fully funded by Sony and completely fair. MS don't have a similar game to go up against it, so they pay a corrupt bribe to a 3rd party who has already made the game to deny it. Negative and bad for gamers.
That is the truth of the matter. By the way, fanboy is a derogative term for those tell lies and distort the truth to justify their loyalty. A fan enthusiastically gives praise where praise is due and does it truthfully. Don't make the mistake on confusing the two as the same.
I know Tomb Raider in some form or another has been on PS for many years and at one point Sony paid for exclusivity. Now MS have the world of gaming is at an end.... So what if last generation it was on PS and a few generations before that it was on PS exclusively as Sony paid for it meaning those on other formats felt exactly the same as those on PS do now. Tomb Raider survived and no doubt will continue to survive! Tomb Raider is not owned by the people - it is a copyrighted creation and owned by a business and as such they can do with it what they please - whether we like that decision or not.
What I do find funny though is all those PS gamers who said they weren't interested in this and wouldn't buy it because of Uncharted and then when its announced as a timed exclusive on MS, they are outraged and now not buying for that reason. What about Sony doing exactly the same thing with Street Fighter 5 and the next gen version of Injustice? A lot of forums said the reboot was bad and certainly no-where near as good as Uncharted. Maybe this feedback from Sony fans helped persuade Crystal Dynamix to make that decision.
Its not just DLC though with some games - look at all the extra content in Destiny. Assassins Creed 4 and Watchdogs had extra content on release too - content exclusive to Playstation that isn't even timed. All gamers pay the same price yet some (depending on console) get less because of it or have to wait longer for their chance to play.
I am not having a go at Sony or MS but both have done similar things in the past and no doubt will do so again. MS may have paid to deny Sony access to this game for however long but Sony paid for Street Fighter 5 to deny xbox owners any access and xbox one owners access to Injustice.
As I have said, I am totally against this practice and it does seem a bit of tit-for-tat. That doesn't mean though that I am going to boycott any game because of it and ruin my 'enjoyment' and 'entertainment'
@BAMozzy
Sales numbers should speak louder than anything. There are always some who will say, whether they truly believe it or not, that 'such and such game isn't better than this exclusive' to make their favorite console look better. That said, I frequent a fair number of PS websites and I can say there's a bigger Tomb Raider fanbase on PlayStation than not. The comment I saw the most was actually one I agree with. Uncharted 2 is better than Tomb Raider 2013 (because Uncharted 2 is better than a good number of games from last gen) but 1 and 3 are nowhere near as good as TR.
There's also the fact that the Tomb Raider games sell better on PlayStation. TR 2013 did 2.40 mil on PS3 and 1.85 mil on 360 with the consoles having similar sales numbers at the time. Underworld, which released at the same time on both consoles in 2008 when 360 was still outpacing PS3 in sales actually sold better on Sony's console 1.25 mil to 1.06 mil. Anniversary and Legend did 390K and 360K on 360 respectively. When the TR trilogy released for PS3 with both those games (and Underworld) it sold 840K. Definitive Edition on PS4 sold 890K to X1's 330K. So forgive me if I say that if CD was listening to feedback from the loud minority on forums, this outfit is run by people even more stupid than I thought. The sales speak for themselves. PlayStation fans love Tomb Raider and this is a pathetic move. Especially if it was to avoid Uncharted 4 which would've had no more or less effect on Rise of the Tomb Raider than Halo 5 will on X1. No boycotts though, I've seen this annoying stuff happen often over the years, you do have to roll with the punches sometimes. As annoying as it is, it's more annoying paying $60 for a supposedly full game like Destiny but getting less content than gamers on the other platform. Destiny's deal makes the one-month wait for Call of Duty maps seem reasonable.
There is so much to play already, why bother being angry about a game arriving later but at the same time somewhat cheaper? It can wait, we get Uncharted first anyway.
Don't mind the wait as long as we're getting the game. Nowadays, there are a lot of timed-exclusive content or games so I am bit surprised with the discounted price tag, though. Besides, aren't COD:BO3 DLCs a timed-exclusive as well? All I can say is. "we win some, we lose some." My only hope is that it has a better multiplayer than the previous one. lol
Side note: That Red Bull bit in the video was hilarious. lol
For me and i am no fan girl I alway buy both last gen I played 360 more this time it's ps4 why it's better now on the game there is no way in hell I am paying 40 for a year old game that will have been so spoiled that it will have zero surprise the only way for me to buy it is cheap as I will have other games to play at that time long term this only hurts the game sales
