It's safe to say that Troy Baker - one of gaming's most prolific voice actors - knows what he's talking about when it comes to voicing video game characters. Baker, who plays Ocelot in the upcoming Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, reckons that fans shouldn't disregard Kiefer Sutherland's role as the title's main character, Big Boss, or Snake, as he's sometimes otherwise known.
"To his credit, Kiefer Sutherland knocked it out of the freaking park, and he came in and he put the work in," Baker stated during a panel at Indy PopCon. He goes on to mention David Hayter, the original voice of Snake, and how, to him, both actors fit the role. "I love David Hayter, I love David, he's a good dude and he's Snake, but so is Kiefer. And that guy showed up, rolled up his sleeves and got dirty on this game. So reserve judgement until you play it. You only have like two more months left and trust me it'll be worth it."
Strong words from The Last of Us star, but we reckon that he's bang on the money with this one. Kojima's latest is only a couple of months away, and with Sutherland being such an experienced actor, there's plenty of reason to look forward to seeing the fruits of his labour.
But what do you think? Are you still weary of the change in personnel, or do you think that Sutherland really will knock it out of the park? Become a demon in the comments section below.

I love 24 but other than that he's a terrible actor
Based on his extensive range of dialogue from every gameplay/trailer segments, I'd be inclined to...
Cipher, Ocelot & Kaz pick up the grunt work.
Hard pill to swallow. So uses to David hatter. Been playing snake since 1999. Played ground forces and didn't like it. Work in progress I guess
Sutherland seems a perfect choice. I love it.
Can't help but think Hideo Kojima is messing with us and that David Hayter WILL be in this game along with Kiefer, maybe the snake we have been seeing isn't the real big boss or maybe this game will feature a time well after les enfants terribles and Hayter could be the voice for the potential appearance of solid snake.. so many theories.. hurry up September 1st!!
David Hayter played Snake well, true.
But then again thats the only actor wed ever heard do so.
Plus this isnt Snake, its Big Boss, so having a different voice makes ALOT of sense.
Personally got nothing against Sutherland, but as soon as he spoke in GZ that just wasn't Snake's voice for me. Oh well, I won't let it ruin the game for me, but still it's a shame I reckon that he couldn't stick around for this one.
@ToOGoodOfAPlaya true, if it weren't for the fact that Hayter has already played Big Boss in 3, Portable Ops and Peace Walker.
@SteveButler2210 Thats a good point.
I personally prefer him sounding different, like he did in MGS4.
Hayter is the iconic MGS voice though.
Considering that Big Boss at this point is on the verge of villainy and jaded by what's happened to him, I think the voice fits. Hayter's Snake is undoubtedly iconic, but I think the decision to switch worked. Plus, I recall reading that Hayter had difficulty doing his Snake voice recently (which is kinda why Big Boss sounded more gravely in Peace Walker), so he probably would have stepped down eventually.
...I could deal with no Hayter.
But now it's freaking Baker instead of Patric Zimmerman OR Josh Keaton? 😤
Boo. Boo to this. How can......? Boo.
Not trying to troll, but damn if every voice in MGS isn't super iconic! It's like that dumb old video with the super-deep voiced Pikachu, IMO. Not to mention the fact that I generally don't care for Baker's brand of acting, and so cannot trust his opinion regarding Southerland's performance. Boo.
hang on...
"he's a good dude and he's Snake, but so is Kiefer"
uhm. two snakes confirmed?!
@mistakable I believe what he meant by that was that Hayter is very associated with the role to the point that he's the clear choice for it (like saying Nolan North is Nathan Drake or Kevin Conroy is Batman), but that Sutherland did a great job in the role as well.
I always thought snakes voice throughout the series was corny and clichéd. Understand that people have a connection as its the voice they gave grown up with. But to me Hayters just a gruff voice.
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi I'm remembering that he was okay in The Vanishing but the more I try to remember that movie (it's been years) the more I wonder if it was a decent movie built around him. Maybe he didn't play a large part in the movie's success. But Jeff Bridges man, Jeff Bridges. He was incredible in that.
I once did a Big Lebowski / The Vanishing double feature with a group of friends. It went over surprisingly well!
Man I'm munchy.
