The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is an epic fantasy adventure that's already consumed associate editor Robert Ramsey's entire soul – seriously, he rocked up to work today with a white ponytail wielding a sword – but there'll be even more for you to sink your teeth into on launch day. Community lead Marcin Momot has confirmed that the first of the title's free DLC add-ons will be available from tomorrow on the PlayStation Store.
In a nod to a rival role-playing property, the complimentary content will include some new horse armour for Geralt's steed Roach, as well as a beard and hairstyle set. Nothing major, then, but next week will see the addition of a new quest and an alternate look for companion Yennefer. And obviously this is just the start, with a total of 16 free packs planned for the release moving forwards. There are also a couple of major expansions in the pipeline – but you'll need to pay for those.
We really, really like CD Projekt Red's open world opus – like, a lot. You can read our review through here, in which we describe it as a "masterpiece". Only a few hours to go, folks...

Well thanks to Lizard squads ddos attack over the weekend my digital pre order of The Witcher is broke. Spoke to Sony and they said that they are aware of the pre order issues with said game and are working on it. Well thanks for taking my money Sony and making me wait with zero information on when I'll get my game.
I think its great that CD Projekt are offering these at no extra charge. It may not be much but other games tend to charge for cosmetic items and DLC like this
@BAMozzy At the same time its a pretty smart move to please consumers and therefor make it more likely they buy the upcoming expansions.
@AyeHaley Whilst it may seem like a 'smart move', its not unusual for CD Projekt to give away free extra content for their games. What is unusual though for them is scheduling and charging for it. On the previous Witcher game, all extra content was free.
That being said, I am still very likely to get the Season Pass...
@BAMozzy I heard that all the small DLC is free and then theres like some huge expansion/s which adds like up to 30 hours of extra content (which is basically almost a whole game) and thats what you get with the season pass. Which to be honest isn't that bad considering some games will charge you £20-40 for a season pass and not give you anything near that much extra content.
To be honest I'm not really looking for an expansion worth of 10s of hours of additional gameplay in a game that already is a 100+ hour game. That seems like a waste of energy that should be targeted towards a new game. How about that steampunk game they were developing?
@Geo-The-Brave There is 16 planned free DLC that will be available to everyone and 2 big expansions that will be available to buy, From what I hear, the free bits are not just cosmetics but also other other things too - like extra contracts/quests.
Open Letter from Marcin Iwiński, co-founder and Joint CEO of CD PROJEKT RED
"At CD PROJEKT RED, we strongly believe this is not the way it should work and, with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, we have decided to do it differently. Cutting to the chase, everyone who buys Wild Hunt will receive 16 specially prepared DLCs absolutely for free, regardless of platform. You don’t have to pre-order, you don’t have to buy any special edition to get them — if you own a copy of Wild Hunt, they’re yours. This is our way of saying thank you for buying our game.”
The first paid expansion, Hearts of Stone, is slated for release in October. The add-on sends Geralt into the wilds of No Man's Land and the city of Oxenfurt to complete a contract from the Man of Glass. The second expansion, Blood and Wine, is scheduled for release during the first three months of 2016. Players can explore a new in-game region of The Witcher 3, Toussaint, which CD Projekt Red describes as "a land untainted by war, where an atmosphere of carefree indulgence and knightly ritual masks an ancient, bloody secret"
Marcin Iwiński said about this "If we ever decide to release paid content for Wild Hunt, I promise you, gamers will see why we decided to charge for it. We'll ask ourselves a simple question: Could anyone feel ripped off when they buy it? If there's even a slightest possibility they will, we won't do it."
Iwiński said in a release. "We remember the time when add-on disks truly expanded games by delivering meaningful content. As gamers, we'd like to bring that back. We've said in the past that if we ever decide to release paid content, it will be vast in size and represent real value for the money. Both our expansions offer more hours of gameplay than quite a few standalone games out there.
"While we're offering the Expansion Pass now, we want to make one thing clear: don't buy it if you have any doubts. Wait for reviews or play The Witcher and see if you like it first. As always, it's your call."
@maamets Adding extra content to keep you in the world, explore new areas etc, in a game that is getting rave reviews across the board sounds very appealing to me.
CD Projekt have said they are not talking about 'Cyberpunk 2077' until this game is out but that doesn't mean they haven't been working on it. Obviously their focus has been on this but I wouldn't be surprised if we start to hear more about 'Cyberpunk' from this point onwards.
@BAMozzy thanks for that chunk of info! I hadn't seen this until now. interesting to know what they have planned down the road.
@Geo-The-Brave No probs! In case you weren't aware, the Free DLC will be releasing 2 pieces every week (or at least that's what they intend). As you see it's not only Cosmetic as the first contains Horse Armour (I wonder if that's to have a dig at Skyrim?) and the second has a new quest.
@Bamozzy thats not too bad, the idea of new quests sounds awesome (going to be too many quests to get through at this rate). And haha maybe it is.
Well, I just can't get the PS4's DLC, I didn't find them. Does somebody know where are them? Thanks.
Does anyone know how much is the season pass please? (my home internet is down at the mo and I can't check on my PS4, boo hoo)
@chris730920 the "expansion pass" is $24.99.
The Expansion Pass is going for £20 / $24.99, though individually Hearts of Stone will be $9.99 (about £7) while Blood and Wine will be $19.99 (about £14).
@KowalskyOfRivia I don't think they are out just yet
I live in Saudi Arabia and I made a US account and downloaded the game so I get the uncensor version but there is no free DLC for me
Though I can see the DLCs already on my main Europe account but it's not on the US account !
T7L3RB many thanks
