This hasn't started off very well, has it? What was supposed to be the definitive edition of Capcom's superb Street Fighter IV, Ultra Street Fighter IV on PlayStation 4 has launched with a slew of problems that have the hardcore fighting game crowd in an uproar.
For years now, both official and non-official fighting game tournaments have made use of Street Fighter IV on the Xbox 360, as the PlayStation 3 version of the fighter was marred by some slight lag - a huge no-no when it comes to competing for big cash prizes. With that in mind, the new-gen port was supposed to usurp the Xbox 360 edition, and become the professional tournament Street Fighter of choice.
However, with the brawler's release on the PlayStation Network yesterday, reports have been flooding in that the title's just not up to scratch. For starters, many players are reporting severe bouts of online lag during ranked matches. Not only that, but some are claiming that there's even offline lag to contend with, and that the game suffers from awful frame rate drops on occasion. The icing on the cake is that the lag also bleeds into the menu screens. You just couldn't make this up.
With the PS4 port being billed as the official tournament title, the development team has its work cut out for it if Capcom doesn't want an angry riot on its hands. Numerous professional players have already taken to social media to spread the word of the game's disappointing performance, and, with any luck, this whole fiasco will hopefully end more smoothly than the brawler's juttering launch.

I heard the game still has "press start" on PS4
More bad news.... this is obviously is not good. I own Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition by the way.
This news is terrible!
I guess this news will stop me preordering SF5 and wait for full review. Been doing this more and more this gen
FGC don't take kindly to sub standard versions, if Capcom don't fix this quick the PS4 version will never see the light of day at tournaments.
@Jazzer94 That's partly the problem; the Capcom Pro Tour has a deal with Sony regarding the use of the PS4 version, so it's up for debate whether or not the companies will let that slide. Of course, if the use of the port for tournaments is forced, in the condition it's in, Capcom could have a full-scale revolt on its hands if the pro players refuse to participate.
Sometimes I blame the hardware, other times the programmers and I have to say the programmers at Capcom are straight crap. Are you kidding me? They can't get a last-gen game running on PS4? I guess I shouldn't be shocked because Resident Evil Revelations 2 ran like crap on PS4 for a while as well. Simply unacceptable, you can't tell me the PS4 hardware is that bad or that tough to program for that these idiots can't get their weak-a$$ last-gen games running well. Inexcusable, it's not wonder this dipsh*t company between it's idiotic business decisions and terrible programmers are in the shape they're in. Sony better do whatever possible to make sure SF V isn't the same kind of crap but this doesn't make me confident. NetherRealm can get Mortal Kombat X running fine, Capcom can't get a PS3 game running on PS4. Just sad, and pathetic, what has happened to these former great Japanese companies.
Sony needs to take some heat too though. Its publishing the f'ing game, how the hell they let this happen is beyond me, but this is the same company that released DriveClub and The Order 1886 and has had just pitiful first-party performance so far this gen by everyone of its studios other than Sucker Punch.
@ShogunRok If the problems are as bad as mentioned above and Capcom try to force this into tournaments in its current state players will definitely boycott, framerate and lag are just not something that is tolerated for something as precise as a fighting game.
@Jazzer94 Yeah, it just depends on who backs down first. The whole thing can go one of four ways:
1) The game is fixed through patches and becomes the tournament pick
2) The game isn't fixed, but Capcom refuses to budge regarding its use in tournaments. Some pro players go along with it, even if they don't like it
3) The game isn't fixed, and Capcom backs down regarding its use in tournaments. Xbox 360 version remains the version of choice
4) The game isn't fixed, and Capcom refuses to budge regarding its use in tournaments. Pro players boycott the events and they flop spectacularly as a result
In my opinion, Capcom has no real choice but to attempt to smooth the game over.
@Gamer83 Yeah this is unacceptable and inexcusable.I swear publishers do not look at final builds before print anymore.
To be fair, Capcom didn't make this.
@get2sammyb There is no "to be fair". This is a port. It should've launched smoothly.
@WebHead I agree with you, but I'm just saying that people can't come in here blaming Capcom when they had nothing to do with this version.
@get2sammyb, This site's GAME OVERVIEW says the Developer is Capcom and the Publisher is Sony Computer Entertainment
@Malouff It's something we need to change about our system. Capcom obviously is the developer of the game, but it was ported by Sony and Other Ocean Interactive I believe.
@get2sammyb even if that's the case capcom would clearly oversee the development no?
The point is that Capcom, and potentially Sony are the companies that have a say regarding the professional tournaments, therefore it's mostly their responsibility to ensure that the game's fit for such events. What a cock-up this has been!
Xbox guys must be loving this, but Crapcom pull up your socks an make this go away PLEASE!!!
@NAZA-187 This is your second warning please watch the language, next time I have to say something will earn you a vacation from the site. -Tasuki-
@get2sammyb
Well, whoever's fault it is, it's ridiculous. And with Sony bringing it over as part of that third party initiative it is pretty ridiculous. I can't wait to see how RE Revelations 2 runs on Vita.
I was planning on getting this after I was done with the Witcher but not now...
Yeah I noticed the menu lag, but not during the fights. (Guess I didn't play enough to notice). Either way it's still inexcusable or unacceptable. Debug testing is becoming more ancient...
...............how do you screw up a port this badly?
Good lord Sony/Capcom
@NaughtyOttsel22
Apparently it wasn't Capcom. I'll take Sammy's word for it on that. But that makes this even more troubling. Sony is funding SF V. If it can't even bring over a last-gen port correctly, wow...
It does not really matter whose fault it is, this should not be happening at all. And of course Capcom and Sony will get blamed, in that order. There was no rush on releasing this, so they could not take the time to get it right.
I'm not a fan of fighting games but this is still extremely disappointing to hear
@Gamer83
Yeah.. for real...
I downloaded it but I haven't played it yet. Guess I will wait till they patch it.
@get2sammyb Capcom may not have done the PS4 port themselves but surely should of sent someone over for quality control to make sure it was tournament level standard.
@Jazzer94 Or maybe Capcom just took the money and left it at that and said it's in your hands now.
It's not been a vintage year for fighting games with Dead or Alive 5 launching on PC without a online mode, Mortal Kombat's Boro behind a preorder paywall, not to mention the Steam version locking out the game's features on launch due to bugs. Now this. I do wonder how much power Sony can really wield in terms of allowing games onto their platform.
I'm going to write a forum post about this later today, so as not to not take the conversation away from the topic.
@NAZA-187 sorry won't Eva do it again.......
@NAZA-187 You were just told to watch the language that includes racial slurs. I am serious this is your last warning. I won't have this discussion with you again. -Tasuki-
Other Ocean should have been a reliable(ish) choice to get the job down, although they are not really known for their massive games work.
Stuff like Stacking and Costume Quest are notable titles but nothing near as delicate as USF4 in terms of getting it to run perfectly.
Apparently they worked on Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection, was that any good?
Ultimately Capcom should have kept an eye on it , and Sony should never have green lighted this with its issues. Fighting games are built around smooth frame rates and no lag..
Pretty inexcusable, considering its place among fighting games and its supposedly future use in the Championships or whatever it is...
Better hurry up and patch it!!!
@dellyrascal Mortal Kombat Kollection was great although I only played it on the 360.
@Gamer83 except resi 4, all hd remasters from capcom were top notch... Here we can see same situation as with Mortal Kombat 10 on PC.
No quality control eh....unreal....
@Tasuki Cool, i did wonder.
Then I guess they just are not up to speed with the ps4's hardware/dev tools.. which is still unusual, considering the job at hand.
@Gamer83 to be fair, SFV is being built for PS4 (unless I misunderstood something along the way) so it should at least be optimized for it rather than a port over so I still have hope for SFV. On the other hand if Sony / Capcom don't fix this issue with Ultra soon , people will continue to have a negative vibe toward SFV or the whole Sony / Capcom partnership unfortunatly . The CEO2015 tournament will have a playable build of SFV for participants to try so we can see how it's coming along. I must say though as a huge Street Fighter fan who was looking forward to this PS4 version, I am highly disappointed
@ShoryukenKid
I was looking forward to this as well. It feels like with all games these days though something goes wrong and it's inexcusable.
Strategic Port? More like Ultra Botched Job.
Now I'm wondering if they could even make SF5 on any Sony platform without input lag or glitches....
Didnt the tourney holders make a deal with Sony to specifically run off their PS4s? Uh Oh.
@Tasuki what u on lil homie what racial slurs are u on about? I apologise the first time an now u giving me a last warning are u like the CEO here if u wanna kick me out this site jus do it.
@NAZA-187 This isn't about kicking you out your welcome to be here we just ask you to keep the language family friendly that's all. I can't repeat what you say but what you referred Japanese people as is a racial slur. If you have anymore questions please use the contact form below.
@Tasuki I apologise if you were offended by the term that I used in referring to Japanese people, I by know means meant it as a racial remark I merely was throwing in a suggestion on how to solve a problem. Let's shake hands and call this quits. I'm not a racial kinda guy. Peace.
Only played it this mornin but
1 - character select lag when it goes to the globe
2 - graphics look a bit weird like the contrast has been turned up
3 - @AyeHaley it has " press start " on the main entree screen and is flashing in the top right
4 - The same awful and super impossible trophies are all present
Hmm... I bought this last night all excited that it was out so soon... Unbelievable. Well, guess I can always play the 3DS version until they patch it if nothing else.
