Here's something unusual: Marilyn Manson – yes, the controversial rocker who rose to popularity in the late '90s – released his new album on old PlayStation discs.
It was more of an artistic decision than anything, as the self-proclaimed Antichrist Superstar's latest record, fittingly named The Pale Emperor, is supposed to represent a change in his soul. Thanks to a thermal layer, the famously black CDs turn white with playback, showing how Manson, in his own words, "sold [his] soul to be a rockstar" but has now "got the mortgage back on [it]".
The album's art directors, Hassan Rahim and Willo Perron, told Kill Screen that they got the CDs from Sony, and that they're actually the very same ones that you would've played games on back in the day. Pretty neat, huh?
What do you think of this odd, artsy idea? Do you enjoy Manson's music and on-stage antics, or are you of a different opinion? Refrain from shouting obscenities and punching drummers in the comments below.

This is a really cool idea. Doesn't make me want to listen to the record, though! XD
@get2sammyb It's terrible. Honestly. Just awful. I liked their first few albums back in the day but this release is just as embarrassing as his last few.
Yeah, Manson is awful these days. If they did something like this with an anniversary edition of Antichrist Superstar or Golden Age of Grotesque... Man, I'd be all over it.
The last Marilyn Manson song I can name is Heart-Shaped Glasses. I quite liked that one.
Hopefully next time its on gamecube discs so its over quicker.
Well I listened to Manson ever since, wasn't too impressed with the last 3 albums and while the latest one doesn't come close to his early works in regards of "poetic painting pictures with lyrics" I still do like it. The sooner you realize that Marilyn Manson is a human being just like anyone of us (with a great sense of humor and an actual gentle soul) the more joy you can find in his music and his antics! Of course you're free to hate him as well!
@themcnoisy I hope you realize that a PlayStation disc holds 660mb and a GameCube disc holds 1.5GB
Please, continue with your witty banter
I'm really curious if the turning to white is a 1 time trick or if it will fade back to black after a while.
*edit
NEVERMIND. the article answers that question
"When you open the CD it's pitch black, but we also added a thermal texture on top—after it gets hot during playback, the disc comes out all white," Rahim revealed. As the disc cools down the black returns, appearing to consume the hot white layer and turning it into a wisp that fades over time.
It's the top part that turns white. really neat if you have a top loading or tray player with a clear view of the disc.
While I haven't thought of listening to Manson since my middle school years, id buy this just for the niftyness of it.
Great album. Great artist.
@Kolma I did know. Massive GameCube fan here.
I thought this album was decent. It's nowhere near as good as Superstar, but it's a damn sight better than Grotesque or Eat Me Drink Me.
Haven't heard this but I used to like his early stuff. Saw him in Manchester touring Holy Wood, he was pretty good! Not the greatest gig I've ever seen (ahem.. Andrew WK), but still a decent night out.
Here's a fun fact for you, While we were waiting to go in, some local church group was trying to save people's souls by passing out donuts that the priest had blessed. Free donuts!
A strange, abstract, but interesting artistic choice. I was never much of a Manson fan, but have found some of his older stuff more enjoyable in recent years. I think it might be more for striking a bit of nostalgia for that era.
I've seen Manson live twice but it's been here recently and not in the 90's when he was in his prime. Haven't listened to this album cause I think he's lost the things that I liked about him in his prime. I think this idea is cool though cause I remember when I was younger and would put PS1 games into my CD player and listen to the music on them. I remember the Twisted Metal games had the music on them and that's what got me into some of the early music I liked as a kid.
