Sony needed the PlayStation 4 to perform spectacularly throughout March in Japan, and while it's not exactly posting vintage numbers, it's definitely doing decently. The console's sales actually increased marginally over the last week following the release of Yakuza Zero, posting around 33,826 units as per the latest Media Create report. This made it the best selling format of the week – about 2,000 units more than the cumulative total of Nintendo's many 3DS models.
Unsurprisingly, it was Yakuza Zero that topped the software charts, too, moving approximately 236,329 units across both PlayStation platforms. As has been consistent with previous releases, the PlayStation 3 version sold best, but the next-gen edition wasn't a million miles behind. It was a good week for the Vita, too, with the excellent looking Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth registering a respectable 76,760 units. This pushed sales of Sony's handheld platform up to 20,103 units for the week.
Perhaps most impressive of all, however, was the appearance of PlayStation Portable release Uta no Prince-Sama: All Star After Secret, which moved a staggering 67,237 units on the phased out format. We've included the full list of hardware and software sales below, so feel free to have a quick browse. Are you eager for any of these Japanese releases to come overseas? I guess the "bu bu but you gotta add all the 3DS sales together!" obligatory comments aren't going to appear this time seen as combined sales are lower....
PS4 & PS Vita are killing it in Japan
@MadchesterManc Haha, indeed! I pulled out my calculator to double check, too.
Hope we see yakuza zero out this way sooner rather than later!
3DS sales are 32,088 total and now you can say PS4 is on the top chart @get2sammyb.
Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth only in Japan put a lot of sadness in my heart.
Yakuza had an impressive launch. I still wonder why Sega cannot use that engine to do Shenmue 3, or even remaster the old games.
Digimon story really needs to come west. I played Digimon World DS and it was pretty good but this new game just looks so awesome
I'm just leaving this here so @ShogunRok can chastise me, he knows what for And my apologies for apparently starting that last week, it was meant as a joke
Amazing! I have this habbit to stalk ( like follow every comment he makes on the sales charts of Japan) a guy called Nesswondersprite on Gematsu! Before he called himself stealth https://twitter.com/stealth___ . Every week when Nintendo is on top he says the sales are great. But whenever the Ps 4 or the vita gets on top he will say abysmal sales overall. Its hitlerious
Those are some nice Vita sales numbers, would love to see this handheld make a comeback at E3.
Can you actually play Out Run in Yakuza Zero? Because that would be brilliant!
@rjejr Never forgive, never forget!
Joke of course...
@rjejr
Don't worry, I enjoyed it.
I hope we get yakuza 0, the whole plot line of majima protecting the blind woman he was supposed to kill was something I'm very curious about.
@ShogunRok - You say you're joking, but I'm steering clear of all of your articles
@Punished_Boss_84 - There's a very fine line w/ you between what gets a laugh and my being "that guy", and I have no idea what or where that line is
I do like that you're back to MGS avatars, suits you better I think.
I think the X-box One will dominate next time?!?!?!?!?! Yeah right. I think PS4 is going to be top over there, with the 3DS next in line. Can't believe the Vita is doing that good over there, and horribly over here in the US. There is so many games coming out for the VITA over there, and they release almost none to nothing over here!!!!
They've got some great games over there. I'd love to see Yakuza Zero make its way West at some point. God Eater 2 as well.
@JLPick
The Japanese PS4 lineup is also ahead of what it has in the West at this point. Unfortuntely many Japanese companies don't want to take risks with their games and I guess I can't blame them because morons would rather run out and buy the latest annual FPS or Madden (which hasn't been a great series since 2004). If the PS4 was getting some of the games here that it's getting in Japan I wouldn't even care about the Uncharted 4 delay. Sony's third party team is willing to bring over RE Revelations 2 for Vita, a dead format here in the West, but they can't work with Sega and Namco to bring over Yakuza and God Eater? Disappointing. I can understand why the Vita doesn't get much support outside Japan because no matter what Sony tried, and it did try, the thing never sold. People are actually buying PS4 and while I'm sure many will be excited about an Uncharted Collection there's a lot like me who have played these games a ton already and want something new. Yakuza and God Eater wouldn't sell combined what Uncharted can but given a good marketing push they could find a nice niche and it makes the console's library better and more varied.
xbox one 307 lol why are Microsoft bothering its bombed over there.
@Gamer83 It is a shame. If the VITA got the games that Japan got, it would be a great system over here with a selling point and could compete with the 3DS. I've noticed that the PSP was like that too, which was a great system too, but never got the support it needed over here. I agree with you on the PS4 too, it's said that all we're getting is remastered versions of games from just one generation ago. They could at least start throwing us some PS2 remasters or even PS1 remasters, or even some compilation remasters of the Genesis or Dreamcast eras. The Uncharted trilogy I didn't even know was coming out, I thought it was just a rumor, but it would be nice to replay them in HD again. The only game I was disappointed in on the PS4 was Little Big Planet 3 for it's story mode...a few hours to beat...seemed like it got rushed to have it out for the system, and I hope their others aren't going to be like that. Guess Hot Shots Golf I'll wait for, and a proper Sing Star that used microphones, not phones to play. I also hope they make a new Buzz with the buzzers.
@JLPick
An Uncharted collection is still just a rumor but most people are certain it will happen, usually where there's a lot of smoke, there's fire.
@Gamer83 I'd still like to see a new Jak and Daxter...like the very first one that reminded me of a mario-type-ratchet-and-clank-style. The sequels didn't hold my interest, but the original was one that my kids love...can't let them play the sequel due to the language and violence.
