The BioWare N7 day roundtable stream is now over, and although we basically sat through half an hour of developers rattling off their favourite Mass Effect moments for the sake of seeing several pieces of brand new concept art, we did actually manage to nab some new info regarding the next title in the series.
For starters, new alien races have been confirmed, and despite a lack of details, this could mean that the game takes place after the events of Mass Effect 3. After all, the franchise is set in our galaxy alone, so unless these races were simply hiding away from the Reaper invasion and somehow avoided being detected by the established races for hundreds of years, it may be safe to say that we'll be journeying far beyond Commander Shepard's story.
The Canadian developer was also keen to stress the importance of exploration. As we already knew, the Mako – the weaponised moon buggy that appeared in the first game – is making a return, and you'll be using it to navigate sprawling planet surfaces. However, the studio also stated that you won't be forced to drive around if you're not a fan of the futuristic vehicle, so we suppose that that means that most of the exploration will be optional.
Elsewhere, it sounds like BioWare has a particular protagonist in mind. While we're sure that you'll be able to customise your hero – or anti-hero – once again, the developer was keen to point out that this character won't start off as famous as the great Commander Shepard, and instead, you'll be working your way up from being a bit of a nobody. Again, there aren't many details to go on, but it sounds like it could be a decent premise for a good intergalactic narrative.
How do you like the sound of the next Mass Effect so far? We should be hearing more about it in the coming months, but until then, let your imagination run wild with the concept art that we've embedded, and don't forget to release your hype in the comments section below.

Thanks for the round up. I am excited for this game, but it worries me that they're being so cagey about it. The project's been announced for ages, but they appear to have nothing to show. It's strange really, as I feel like the next Mass Effect should be a cause for celebration.
@get2sammyb
EA didn't think the 'Gen 8' consoles would be this much of a success, which would explain why they've shown off nothing but vapourware at this stage.
The most logical explanation. But, whateves we should be excited about vapourware cause it's the next big stage in disappointment...
I hope not a stiff movement, can holster weapon, can walk not run all the time, on/off helmet ill be very happy, mako is back the rest is i believe bioware makes another masterpiece, take ur time and surprise us bioware!
@get2sammyb To be fair I think this part of EA's new approach where they only show games that aren't far from release (like E3 this year).
You know what I would love to see? A choice to play as a different race instead of human, heck why not have the Origins part of the first Dragon Age too, that would be awesome.
To be fair there have been other games like the new dragon age, star wars battlefront new cod so probably not the main oriority . I think the me trilogy will be released first on ps4
Mass Effect is one of my favourite franchises ever, but I'm a bit on the fence about it after the... ahem ending of ME3... Would like some concrete details soon!
That's odd.I keep throwing my money, but nothing.
I really want to be excited for this, but am secretly hesitant to go full board hype just yet.
I miss the old pre-EA Bioware. The one that would finish a game, end it on a strong note then create a brand new IP for its next game and it would be even better than its last game. Now it's just a house of Mass Effect and Dragon Age nonsense.
@JaxonH
I don't blame you, I consider myself a fan of the Mass Effect series and I'm not hyped at all. I didn't love the ending to 3 but I didn't think it was such a terrible downer to end on either. Even if it was, sometimes it's best to just leave something be. Shepard's story is over, why do we need a new Mass Effect? I know the answer is $$$ but I'm just talking from the non-business side. It's not realistic but I wish Bioware could get out from under EA's control and things could go back to the way they used to be.
I'm excited to play ME4, though I'll probably wait until I've beaten the original trilogy first.
@Gamer83
I was a HUGE fan of the Mass Effect games (yes, even part 3), but like you, I question why we even need another 'Mass Effect' game (other than EA wants to make $ off the name, of course). Why not a new IP?
And where the heck is my Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic HD remaster?!!
Just wishful thinking, I guess.
Remaking the trilogy for the PS4 and XBO seems like a waste of time to me. People could get it for much cheaper on the PS360 already.
If BioWare REALLY wanted to give the original ME trilogy one last hurrah, they should repackage it for the Wii U. They want the PS4 and XBO to be "next-gen"? Then by God, they HAVE to focus on new IPs.
@Godsire-
If they're going to waste time on remakes, I agree, at least give us worthwhile ones of classics like KOTOR, we don't need a Mass Effect 'remastered.'
