If you thought that Destiny's story was a bit of an unfulfilling mess, then you'll be delighted to know that developer Bungie aims to craft a better narrative with the title's first expansion, The Dark Below.
Talking to Eurogamer.net, studio president Harold Ryan states that the downloadable content has "a very different approach to telling a new story." He goes on to say that "it's going to feel much more loot driven and story driven in that it's going to feel faster-paced with more action as you go through it, and with exposition." We suppose that sounds slightly better than the core game's disjointed plot, although having said that, you could also label your Ghost's meaningless comments as 'exposition'. Or perhaps we're just cynical.
"Have you done the Thorn exotic quest?" Ryan asks the online publication. "So, looking at how the exotic quests work, like the Thorn quest, was the inspiration for how we're attempting to tell the story in this expansion." For those out of the loop, exotic quests typically see you completing a series of objectives for specific characters based in the tower in order to nab a powerful new weapon. And, judging from Ryan's comments, it seems like that same process will be applied to The Dark Below's three story missions.
Moving away from the narrative, Ryan also details the DLC's other features, which include two new strikes — one of which is a PlayStation exclusive — and a fresh raid to try your luck at. Will you be diving into more Destiny content in the coming months? Fight off three waves of enemies as your Ghost unlocks the comments section below.

Nothing can save Destiny's story. Nothing.
Agreed Sammy
So 20 quid for
3 story missions
2 Strikes
1 Raid
3 PvP maps.
Thanks but no thanks, I really wanted to like Destiny but as solid as the gameplay was I just didn't enjoy playing the same maps over and over again with friends online just to get better loot...not to mention to farming, good lord the farming.
Funnily enough the one thing I enjoyed most was probably PVP which is being short changed in this expansion.
I'm mad for it, I still enjoy Destiny and I'm really looking forward to more content.
I can't wait I got the next 2 expansions for £25 so for £12.50 a new raid more strikes/weapons, maybe new levels and new areas to explore DAYM now thats what you call value for money. Maybe some more maps for multiplayer would be nice but I dont mind waiting until the next expansion to see what other goodies we get for £12.50. Tis funny how the ultra low price for the next 2 expansions (£12.50 each just incase you didnt notice) didnt get mentioned at all but if they were £30 each it is ALL we would hear the hater's talking about.
I love Destiny but I am still annoyed we need DLC to experience the full story...especially when you look at how little story there is in the 70 euro main game.
and 20 for just 3 story missions, 2 strikes and a raid? ...Three 20minute horde mode missions like the rest of the game, I presume? Am I wrong in thinking everything we do in Destiny is just shoot and deploy Ghost?
I hope we get more stuff like "The Sword of Crota", more diversity. Oh and put Raid elements in the main game. And why oh why did they go with a generic "The Darkness" story...At least give us interesting characters...
Anyway, I hope we get the full story of Destiny 1 before the sequel comes out even though we have to pay too much for a small amount of DLC, most of which should've been part of the main game. How can anyone call this cheap or value for money?
@xmeadx
£12.50 each? Bungie have confirmed they're £20 each separately or £35 quid for the season pass. How did you get it for £25 exactly (Legitimately curious here as I may be open to buying it for that price)
The only way we have to avoid another attempt to cut a game and sell it into episodes (at very high prices), is to not buy these dlcs....
I got the next 2 expansion packs for £25 from the PS+ store around the beggining of the month. Tbh i'd quite happily pay £20 for the next expansion if I still needed to, thats not much at all in my opinion.
To Quote Kotaku's Mike Fahey: "In The Dark Below, a new character Eris will arrive at the Tower to deliver an ominous warning: that The Hive plans to summon a powerful god, Crota, to destroy Earth. "
New character? What about the old ones? What's going on with those guys? Who was that mysterious lady? What's happening to my world?"
Right?! How can we connect to a world and truly feel like we're part of it when its all one incoherent mess? Who, what, why, where, when? I want to know!
Ah, by the way, reading the full interview fully clarified that there won't be new locations, basically everything is on the Moon (hellmouth)
I still consider it DLC rather than an expansion. And yeah, the story is dead in the water. Having to make it better with $20 DLC, isnt actually making the core story better.
So 2 dlc for £35, not worth it. I have paid a lot less for season passes which contains 4 dlcs
So, essentially, they're saying you can unlock the "good portion" of Destiny's story with DLC? ...Why does that sound so wrong to me? lol
Anyway, I might buy it for the sake of playing with friends, but I kind of don't want to at the same time. Don't want to pay $20 for what seems like a glorified expansion pack with mainly new weapons, gear, etc. :/
On your bike, Bungie!
Too expensive and too late, what a dirty hack job
@Punished_Boss_84 lol trading my copy in this week, for me they've probably ruined the franchise, I'm going to 'miss' the good stuff because I'm not prepared to pay double for the game. Fairly happy I only paid about 30 quid for my copy, game was a slight disappointment but I wasn't expecting to be blown away, if they down hack up the next game and they release a 'complete editoon' that I can rent for this title then I might be tempted but for now the franchise is already dead to me.
Angry Joe's review pretty much explains all the flaws of the game and this "pay to unlock" system.... The risk here is that this will become the trend for future AAA games.... make the game -> castrate it -> sell the complete experience through DLCs....
How many of you will gonna pay 10 years of DLCs for Destiny?
I'll probably get the expansion pack eventually, I already have a lot to do in the game. The price should have been cheaper or even free due to the many disappointments people have with the game.
@get2sammyb I guess that about sums it up really. ;(
So basically I've got to pay more for the privilege of having a narrative that doesn't resemble swiss cheese? To be honest I'd understand all this paid DLC malarkey adding in an actual story if Destiny was F2P, but I had to pay £50 for the base game if I recall. You messed up Bungie, and you know it yourselves.
@arnoldlayne83 Angry Joe's review was pretty much spot on for me. He usually gets it right with his AAA game reviews.
Many ppl don't get the real, most important point imho, of all of this....
If this destiny selling policy (or cash milking or whatsoever you wanna call it) turns to be a commercial success, be prepare to see many AAA franchises following its path.... we are gonna pay 50 bucks for essential/basic games and other 20 every x months to get the full package.... it's like go to the cinema to see your last favourite blockbuster, the movie end at the half, and the second part you are gonna buying monthly dvds.....
@arnoldlayne83 I feel Angry Joe really did nail everything that was wrong with the game while also taking time to talk about what it got right and all the missed opportunities Destiny had.
Destiny was a shockingly repetitive mess of missed opportunities and flaws that brought down what could of been a truly great game...terrible uninvolving story's and characters...the same environments reused way too much, missions that retread the same ground as each other.
The new expansions may add more story but it's not enough to interest me in going back to the game to just see the same locations yet again...and again...and again.
Many of the flaws pointed out in Push Squares recent review of Shadow Warrior are also present in Destiny but while they are used to put down the former they are mostly forgiven in the latter.
The FIRST expansion. It's not gonna help it with only one expansion, when you have many more coming.
@Munkyknuts yeah but Shadow Warrior wasnt a game by Bungie, so that obviously gets its minus 2/3 points right from the start
Still haven't played a Bungie game thats been worth the hype!
@Munkyknuts
I totally agree with you.... and it really seems like Bungie had to "reconsider" the whole game in order to "please" Activision (from a vision of a universe -> cash cow).... If you take a look on early interviews and footage of the game, you see another game than what they delivered.... which is pity.... As you said, Destiny could have been so much... almost a World of Warcraft in the Solar system.... instead is a very repetitive grinding FPS with great gunplay and art direction....
@arnoldlayne83 that game we saw early details of is the game I was looking forward to. I don't believe the game we got was what Bungie intended to be released and I feel bad for the creatives who worked on Destiny having their vision changed as I do for us gamers who got the end result.
I think Destiny will be the greater thing it is meant to be eventually but it's sad that the plan for us to get there is to have to pass through pay walls and get things that were chosen for cold cynical cash making over artistry and a desire to deliver the best fan serving experience.
@hadlee73 that's a very cynical view of how Destiny has been presented and I'd have to agree with it...I think Bungie has had a lot of criticism levelled at them that should be aimed at Activisions money making ploys. One day when Activision isn't holding a legal bomb over people to keep them silent the real story of the game will come out.
