PlayStation Plus PS4

Once upon a time, it was free to play multiplayer games on Sony’s flagship home console – but the PlayStation 4 has changed all of that. The platform holder sneakily announced during its E3 2013 press conference that you’ll need to pay in order to play its next-gen system online, and considering the popularity of PlayStation Plus at the time, very few complained.

There have been some criticisms aimed at the quality of the service of late, but by and large, it still remains an excellent value proposition – even if we did wish that multiplayer was free. Still, we suppose that our wish will be granted for one weekend only, as the Japanese giant has announced that it will be holding a free multiplayer event.

Starting from 12:00AM PST (08:00AM BST) on Friday, 26th September, the manufacturer will be lifting its next-gen system’s paywall for an entire weekend, meaning that you’ll be able to play titles such as Destiny and FIFA 15 online without requiring an active subscription. You’ll have until 00:00AM PST (08:00AM BST) on Monday, 29th September to give things a whirl.

We can’t imagine that there are an enormous amount of PS4 owners that don’t have an active PlayStation Plus membership, but we suppose that this entire initiative is designed to show those few what they’re missing out on. Have you refused to subscribe to Sony’s premium subscription service? Tell us why in the comments section below.
