The PS Vita dipped below 20,000 units in the latest Japanese sales report.

Still, the recently released system suffered an almighty dip, selling approximately 50% of last week's tally, a number which is, triumphantly for the doomed brigade, less than 20,000 units.

To be precise, it managed to sell just 18,361 units. The positive news is that every other system was down by about the same percentage (roughly). But still, it's not good news, and Sony desperately needs the PS Vita's second wave of software to drop quickly. Despite the strong launch line-up, it's been a wasteland in Japan since the middle of December. We're not sure the latest WipEout's going to do much to appeal to Japanese gamers, but it's a start.

The New Year lull affected all of Sony's systems, with PSP scraping just 22k units and PS3 managing 30k. Even the 3DS dipped by about half, though it still managed to sell a triumphant 100k units. The Nintendo system is pretty much unstoppable in Japan right now.

At least some PlayStation software managed to finish on top, with Namco Bandai's Super Robot Taise OG Saga Masou Kishin II taking the lead of a decidedly slow week. The Nintendo 3DS trifecta rounded out the top five, while Final Fantasy XIII-2 held on in eighth.
