Uncharted 3 Will Not Utilise Dedicated Servers Due To Cost Concerns.

“We’re not going to have dedicated servers, [we] made that decision long time ago [and] we built the current player host-client architecture,” Naughty Dog stated on Twitter.

“[The] decision for that server architecture was to be better able to support our fans long-term if we can [and] want.”

Naughty Dog believes the money saved from using dedicated servers will allow Uncharted 3's multiplayer component to be accessible for longer periods going forward. The alternative involves prematurely closing game servers, similar to the announcements made by EA earlier today.

“The cost delta [between] dedicated & non-dedicated [servers] is huge long term. Eventually someone will say it costs too [much and] shut them down," Naughty Dog added.

“My personal hope is that by keeping costs down [and with] strong enough community, we could be in a position to consider [four or more years] of uptime."
