This latest Mortal Kombat trailer is a bit dry — since when did developers actually start fronting their products? — but it's massively exciting for part-time fighting game players like ourselves.

Introducing the Challenge Tower, which is basically Mortal Kombat's reimagining of the traditional "Mission" mode you usually get in fighting games. Instead of giving you a list of moves and combos to complete, the Challenge Tower introduces a bunch of dumb storyline stuff and new mechanics. There are shooting galleries to help you improve your fireball throwing skills, fights where you lose your arms and have to focus on using your legs, and many more. In fact, there's over 300 missions in total.

Why is this good? Because for too long now fighting games have sat on their laurels assuming players know how to play. By introducing new rules, new challenges and new mechanics, Challenge Tower sounds like it will teach you how to play Mortal Kombat while keeping you hooked and engaged. It looks a bit like the old Soul Calibur campaign modes, with some form of currency presumably unlocking new bits of art and costumes.

Capcom: take note. This is how you do a fighting game's training mode.
