A derogatory term, apparently, for those who are challenged with their sexuality. ThinkB4YouSpeak.com want you to change your attitude, they want you to change your phrases and they want you to please think before you speak.
We appreciate this ad campaign is supposed to be offensive, brash, clear and a talking point. It makes sense, a point is trying to be made, right? However, the phrase "fighting fire with fire" springs to mind. In fact, the whole thing stinks of hypocrisy, and while we appreciate that's kinda meant to be the point, we don't think it's the answer.
People are getting offended all the time. You have to deal with it. While we accept that people shouldn't feel "less" because of their sexual preference, does the harmless use of the word "gay" offend them any more than those who insist on using the derogatory term "God" around religious people. There are a billion examples we could place here. Perhaps their campaign is trying to sit under a broad umbrella of all derogatory terms, but at one point do we become a nation of zipped mouths in fear of saying the wrong word?
No one in the PushSquare office happens to dabble with the same-sex, but even if we did, we doubt any of us would get offended from a single derogatory phrase. After all, every single one of us has to shake off phrases that offend us every day.
There's a line between being offended and namby-pambying. Frankly, we find this patronising.
