Publisher: Bungie / Developer: Bungie
Release Date: 8th Dec 2020 (USA) / 8th Dec 2020 (UK/EU)

Bungie's online shooter is still at the top of the pile when it comes to gunplay, although there's no denying that Destiny 2 is a tough nut to crack if you're completely new to the sci-fi sequel. Get stuck in, though, and you'll find an abundance of quality content to chew on. Campaigns, co-op missions, competitive multiplayer — it's a game that feels like it's fit to burst at points, and the aforementioned action is the glue that holds everything together.

Publisher: Bethesda / Developer: MachineGames
Release Date: 12th Oct 2021 (USA) / 12th Oct 2021 (UK/EU)

There are plenty of retro-tinged first-person shooters available these days, and many of them owe their existence to Quake. Following in the footsteps of id Software's DOOM, this game is viewed as one of the progenitors of the modern FPS; it was incredibly advanced at the time it originally launched. Now, it's fully playable on PS5, with upscaled visuals, local and online multiplayer, and even some brand new content. Horde mode is exactly what it sounds like, while the Dimension of the Machine expansion is a fresh chapter in the game's single-player campaign. Obviously this is a product of its time, but if you're in the mood for an old-school frag fest, this is a great choice.

4A Games' post-apocalyptic adventure Metro Exodus feels like it was meant for PS5, with silky smooth performance, great looking ray-traced graphics, and complete DualSense functionality. While some flaws of the original release do persist — those accents! — there's a lot to like about this game on Sony's current-gen system. Featuring loads of tense story moments and some super atmospheric exploration, this train ride through the Russian wasteland makes for a memorable journey.

Publisher: Funktronic Labs / Developer: Funktronic Labs
Release Date: 22nd Feb 2023 (USA) / 22nd Feb 2023 (UK/EU)

Roguelikes may be dime a dozen, but they’re less commonplace in virtual reality. The Light Brigade proves that the format can work with PSVR2 to excellent effect, and while it does little to reinvent the genre’s well-worn wheel, it instead focuses on executing all of its ideas to an exemplary standard. The result is an almost immaculate shooter, with stunning gameplay and an outstanding reward loop.

Publisher: Bethesda Softworks / Developer: id Software
Release Date: 29th Jun 2021 (USA) / 29th Jun 2021 (UK/EU)

If you like your first-person shooters fast, demanding, and bloody, DOOM Eternal is the peak. A fantastic gameplay loop means you're constantly on the move and playing aggressively, earning more ammo and health by getting right up in those demonic faces and literally ripping them a new one. On PS5, it's somehow even better, with three visual modes — including one with ray tracing — and DualSense support. A brilliant FPS that really sings on Sony's current hardware.
