Zero Parades: For Dead Spies is out this week on PC, and so critic reviews are starting to trickle in.
It was always going to be interesting to see how this one's received, since it's technically the successor to Disco Elysium — one of the most highly regarded RPGs of the last decade or so.
However, Zero Parades has long had an uphill battle on its hands, stemming from the fact that several key creatives behind Disco Elysium were allegedly thrust from developer ZA/UM following the game's success.

Since then, the studio has been framing Zero Parades as a true follow-up — a marketing angle that many Disco Elysium fans deemed manipulative, given that the title's most important leads had left the company.
But as it turns out, Zero Parades is supposed to be pretty damn good. At least, according to these initial reviews.
The game's currently sitting at an overall score of 83 on Metacritic, based on 19 reviews. Now, obviously, that's not an outstanding rating, but several outlets are seriously singing its praises.
Basically, these reviewers are saying that Zero Parades, despite everything, is still a really strong role-playing experience, packed with interesting characters and meaningful player choice. In that sense, it's supposed to be a worthy successor to Disco Elysium.
That being said, several reviews do state that, as a whole, the title can struggle to live up to the lofty expectations that were set by its predecessor. They still give it a high score, but it's not quite on par with what's come before.
We've gathered a handful of said reviews below:
Eurogamer - 5/5
"It is a narrative distillation of the familiar into a messy, painful journey that feels, at turns, cinematic and mundane, sharp and silly – a fine-tuned caricature of humanity's petty, poisoned psyche, a game made with care, for only the finest sickos."
TechRadar - 4.5/5
"Zero Parades: For Dead Spies establishes a strong identity for itself with its deep understanding of human nature and political philosophy, plus plenty of twists on the standard CRPG formula. The story is slow, and some elements don't quite live up to their potential, but it's still one of 2026's essential games."
PCGamesN - 8/10
"Thankfully, both the dramatic encounters and Exert systems make up for some of the game’s less interesting moments, breaking up the text’s monotony while raising the stakes. Zero Parades, in many ways, feels even more TTRPG than Disco Elysium, and in my book, that’s a win."
GameSpot - 8/10
"It struggles in other areas, often feeling like a pale imitation of the studio's predecessor — dangerous territory when the likelihood of reaching the same heights is marginal at best. But even with these hiccups, this is still an excellent RPG."
GamesRadar - 3.5/5
"As a successor to Disco Elysium, ZA/UM's spy-fi RPG is a little too fearful to roll the dice on something new. But if the systems and themes are a little too familiar in Zero Parades: For Dead Spies, that does mean some of the old charm persists."
Zero Parades: For Dead Spies is still aiming to release on PS5 this year — but how do you feel about it? Carefully select the ideal dialogue option in the comments section below.

Disco Elysium is one of the best games I've ever played, I can slot the drama off to the side if it means a similar gaming experience. There just isn't anything else quite like it, that alone is why I'll give it a chance. I do expect review bombing, people are very passionate about the original, time will tell.
Don’t care. It can be the best game in the world but it only exists because they want to make money off the back of other people’s work.
The game may very well be great, but the whole Stalin portrait fiasco still leaves a really bad taste in my mouth. I'll be passing.
Considering that Disco Elysium is right up there with Baldur's Gate 3 as the most important CRPGs of the last decade (at least) following up was always going to be a tough act to follow, and with the messy aftermath at ZA/UM it's a miracle it's getting these reviews.
The "glass half full" of this situation is that we are getting a bunch of DE spiritual successors, and it looks like the first to come out is worthy of its pedigree.
Disco Elysium is a fascinating game. I’m very curious about this.
Woah, that certainly is a plot twist i didnt see coming. Call me intriguiged...
@THEBrew it was the main creative team that were ejected.
Of course indie glazing Eurogamer always have 5/5s ready for these kinda games. Even if your game is as good as any indie game, once it's AAA, it's 3 or less for you from that site.
83? Barely playable.
I think in a situation like this, a game deserves to be judged on it’s own merit. I will certainly give it a try at some point.

@1234five damn, if only it had gotten 68%!
I'll be all over this day 1 when it comes to PS5, DE is in my top 3 games of all time, a true classic.
Hope the music is as good, I bought the British Sea Power OST and listen to it most weeks, really atmospheric and moody, I love it.
I'm surprised they managed to knock out something that is actually good despite the missing key talent. But yeah, it does leave a sour taste knowing what happened. I'm intrigued but will probably wait for sale.
@Mostik I never bought the album but still have the music in my head to this day. Cracking soundtrack.
@Mostik I’m absolutely bereft that I might need to sell my vinyl copy of the OST. I saw Sea Power a few years back too, they were fantastic live.
@THEBrew yh not going to disagree there, thats nonsense. Im more surprised that its good, thats what intriguiged me, thought it would be a souless dumpster fire.
I’ll only play this one if I decide to steal it
@nessisonett Pretty sure that's how jobs work. At least in private industry.
Disco is probably my favourite game of all time and Zero Parades is my current most anticipated. Don’t know if I have the strength to wait for it on PS5!
It's hard not to suspect that they let the original people lay all the foundations for the sequel, then forced them out and finished the title without them. It's kind of ironic if the game was finished in this fashion.
@nessisonett I'm envious mate, only got the CD myself, if I had a spare couple of hundred quid I would offer to take it off your hands! Try and hold on to it though buddy, a true classic 😎
Hope it doesn't run like crap like the last PS5 version.
