Platinum Trophy #35: Horizon Forbidden West
Date Earned: 23rd February 2022
Dopamine Index:
I'm going to be very honest with you: I put off writing this Going Platinum for days.
Not because I dislike Horizon Forbidden West (far from it), but because I'm just really tired of the same conversations circling around whenever the game is brought up.
There are a lot of vocal people that love an opportunity to tell you how bad they think it is. There are defenders (like me) who frequently point to the series' impressive sales as some sort of proof that it's beloved.
In this sense, Horizon is the Avatar of video games. Many people love talking about how much they hate James Cameron's sci-fi action flicks, but they're among the highest-grossing movies ever made. I'm doing that weighing-things-up-in-my-hands gesture, if you'd like to imagine that.
It's just not very interesting to have this back-and-forth anymore; I feel like we barely talk about the game itself at this point.
That's a shame, because there's so much to discuss.
For example, I think my main criticism with Forbidden West is that it felt like the writers didn't quite know what to do with Aloy after her brilliant origin story in Horizon Zero Dawn.
They set up this fantastic character with a fascinating backstory, and it tied up quite neatly at the end as she finally came to terms with who she was. Now what? I guess she could travel to the west coast? Because of a weird corruption or whatever?
The setup works fine, but I do think Aloy feels a little flat in the sequel because that mystery that was really driving her in the first game is gone, and it's not replaced with anything quite as interesting.
I do really like how bonkers the story goes, though. No spoilers, but there are some really fun twists and turns that I'm excited to see expanded upon in Horizon 3 (see you in 2032).
It's by no means perfect, and I can certainly understand people who don't like the story. It makes some big choices that aren't for everyone, but that's sort of why I like it. It's leaning in so hard.
In basically every other department, I think Forbidden West is a better game than its predecessor. There's more to do at any given moment, side quests are much improved, the tribes are more interesting, the world is more varied, the machines are fun as hell to fight — I really think it's a great sequel in numerous ways.
Anyway, the point I'm trying to make is that discourse about games could and should be far more interesting than "This is amazing/this is terrible" — we could be talking about all the cool stuff the game attempts to achieve, and whether we think it did. Wouldn't that be nice?
I guess I should at least mention the Trophies, seeing as that's kind of the anchor of this feature I came up with — fun list!
As alluded, I played Forbidden West for review, but I was also tasked with making guides, meaning I put in a lot of hours and naturally earned the platinum after scouring every inch of it.
In typical Sony fashion, the Trophies are not particularly challenging, but they do encourage you to at least check out every aspect, like the Machine Strike mini game and the combat arenas.
There's not a whole lot to write home about in terms of the plat, then, but I really enjoyed my time with Forbidden West and can't wait for the next major instalment.
Cheers, Horizon Forbidden West.

Can we get one article on this site that isn't trying to start a fight?
It's a lovely game, but i found It a Little bit boring. Also, too many secondary missions, i found that very distracting.
I also like this game a lot but I felt like the balancing was slightly off and the game was too hard without difficult to acquire upgrades.
That was definitely a fun one and I loved the game world, but I do remember having to juggle saves to scan some machine types I'd missed. I think they were one-time bosses or something. I really wish they'd give us a third game.
Also correct me if I'm wrong but are those stock images or do you include pictures from your own run? I'm sure people would like to see those too, given that games like that have great photo-modes and it's part of the journey for a lot of people.
I really enjoyed this one. Took zero dawn and turned it up to 11. Was the first game and I played on the PRO and it blew me away
Not hated enough. When talking about the over done “Sony style” game with Wolverine when it’s horizon that’s the main culprit. The most generic AAA mismatch of genres that don’t do anything truly amazing. Horizon is the game that the Wolverine haters think Wolverine is.
My GOTY in 2022 and still my fav PS5 game to date. IMO the best looking PS5 game out there. (Have you gone diving in the Burning Shores area?) An absolutely fantastic sequel especially gameplay and exploration wise. Sad that we have such a long wait till Horizon 3.
Edit: I got the Plat on PS4 & PS5.
@3Above homie needs to play more games I see
@Enuo They do have a point though, Horizon often gets over hated.
@Fishmasterflex96 I play a fair amount of games actually. Been honing my taste in gaming for over 3 decades now so I know what I like, And i love Forbidden West 😁
@3Above same been playing since Super Nintendo and I loved Forbidden West.
Horizon Zero Dawn has one of the best openings I’ve ever experienced. The problem for me is that the story never gets anywhere close to its quality ever again.
I will acknowledge I never finished Forbidden West, but its DLC always rubbed me up the wrong way. Maybe I read the characters the complete wrong way, but I was waiting for the romance subplot between Aloy and Errend. To have the official love interest just show up felt very last minute as a gotcha.
@Fishmasterflex96 my manz thinks only the games he likes are good games lol. Horizon: Forbidden West is a great game! You hate it and that’s fine. After all, opinions will differ because greatness is subjective.
Removed - offensive remarks
Yep they love to hate it with that "first time nostalgia" bias they have for HZD, when HFW is a much bigger improvement with more immersion like resting and changing time of day. I just hate it when you want to pretend the protagonist never rests and is on the move 24/7 in an open world. And sometimes I find it more enjoyable than GoW, dunno why. Horizon is somewhat an underrated franchise always releasing at the wrong times when the year is stacked with other big games.
Forbidden West was a major letdown for me considering that Zero Dawn is my favourite PS exclusive. They made everything bigger but not necessarily better.
@Quintumply The writers really did not know what to do with Alloy or the overall story in general, because if you check wikipedia they literally changed the entire lead writing team for this one... And it shows! But as I said - very solid gameplay for me...
I have the platinum in Forbidden West, the game is fun to play. But the story it is the most cliche modern audience slop imaginable. The final battle area and the ending are lame. And the DLC manages to be even worse.
I think the problem people mostly have is with the story but fail to see the reason why. Zero dawn was a complete mystery. We had no idea what had happened or why and we spent the entire game figuring it out. FW we knew pretty much everything that had happened and why.
While not awful, it's not a great sequel imo. The combat felt worse (being knocked on your arse EVERY time you got hit was frustrating), the story went batshit bonkers for no reason, like really, 1000 year old "immortals" that people fighting robot dinosaurs with bows and spears have to fight?
Loved it. Didn’t stick the landing on the story but it was pretty good
Would love to play a final chapter to round out the story
Don’t understand the hate for it but each to their own I guess
The uninteresting story is main and biggest flaw of the sequel. To the point I really didn’t care about the story. Cutscenes and idiotic dialogues only increased this disappointment.
First game was fun and enjoyed it but am not a fan, And the second was trying to extend the main game into 15more hours by requirement upgrade weapons and long speeches and fight against big robot just to get small part of simple weapons, still prefer the first game.
One of my favorite series out there. The story went off the rails with space people etc but I can’t wait to see how it all wraps up.
I enjoyed Forbidden West just as much as the first game, I liked both of them, but I get why the second game didn't land for a lot of peeps.
Great game with an awesome setting. But her personality seemed to do a 180, I really disliked her at times!
Beautiful game with some of the best graphics. But it felt boring at times. The conversations with other characters felt dull and unexciting. I love Aloy's character, so I am very much looking forward to the next one despite my comments on the second game.
@Enuo all about those clicks, baby!!!
Horizon is weird for me. I don’t like the combat (simply because I can’t aim worth anything) but I respect it because it makes sense in the world that Aloy exists in.
I love Aloy, her story and the world building and it is rare to get a Lesbian protag in anything so that makes her doubly interesting. Horizon is interesting as well as it takes a desolate, pitiable story premise that is rampant with the greed and ego of man and yet there is so much hope even when you almost feel humanity doesn’t deserve it. My only hope is that the series continues to have Aloy grow beyond her origins and purpose as I suppose I am rooting for that more than saving the planet (again). Also more Seyka. Normally gameplay matters most for me, with coherent story second but Horizon has managed to happily drag me along, eager to see the story’s conclusion.
that being said I do think that HFW succeeded at being a good sequel in the general sense. The story was consistent but was moved forward without any weird pacing, Combat and movement were improved but still retained the flavor of the original game, it looked prettier and set up for the 3rd game.
This series and Ghost of Yotei (and the weird fighting game support sony gets) are the reason I have a PS5.
Horizon games are good but I couldn't help to feel indifferent about anything going on story wise. I guess it's a testament to it's solid gameplay mechanics. I think compelling characters just aren't guerillas strong suit.
I loved Forbidden West. It had alot of side quests but I think they were trying to make it feel like a living breathing world. For the most part I think they succeeded. I did get bored with some of the side quests and would then just find something else to do and come back to them later. I like the Sony style trophies. I'm in my 60s and somedays my hands are stiff and don't work as well as they did when I was younger. You can get the trophies playing the game as you normally would.
The greatest strategy the internet warriors ever pulled off was rebranding legitimate critique as hate, lol. This sequel was mediocre and it’s not hate to say that. It’s visually stunning. And the combat is excellent. But the characters and story are some of the most forgettable in gaming. But I imagine this article was written for engagement and not for conversation.
I played and finished the first game although it took me a long time to get round to doing so. I enjoyed it a lot. I have the sequel (deluxe edition) but I have yet to play it. I don't care if aloy looks like a docker or anything else that's been deemed wrong about the games direction. What matters to me is that the game is a decent one and it appears it is. I will play this eventually but I'm in no mad rush.
I certainly don't hate Forbidden West, but I prefer Zero Dawn. My main beef is from a gameplay standpoint. I liked the somewhat slower combat of the original, I liked more methodically targeting specific parts.
They amped up the pace of combat in Forbidden West and for me that just makes it too hectic. To compensate for the faster, more reactive robots, they had to make Aloy more durable to the point where its silly. Aloy is now constantly getting knocked around and tanks those hits like she's a comic book character. She gets flung 50ft in the air by a huge metal T-rex tail and shrugs it off by eating a couple berries. I'm definitely not in the realism makes games better camp, but at the same time there needs to be some level of grounding in a game that one would presume is trying to get you to think of the player character as human at some point...
I wasn’t massive on Zero Dawn so Forbidden West was less of a disappointment and more just another entry in a series that did absolutely nothing for me.
Not a bad game, but I didn't care for Aloy as s main character. The best thing about the games was the combat.
I bounced off of Zero Dawn twice. Just didn't care for it. I got a code for Forbidden West with my PS5, just never played it (they packaged it with the only PS5 that I could get my hands on - how much did that help with sales, I wonder?). I think that's why I didn't like the open world in Rebirth - it was very much a Horizon clone.
Forbidden West is an entirely competent game that manages to perfectly summarize all the worst aspects of modern design.
I don't hate it because it's the worst game ever. I don't hate it because I had no fun with it. I hate it because I really like the Horizon IP, and FW convinced me I shouldn't.
It was a massive disappointment, and, while everyone is free to like what they like, I can't help but think those that see it as anything more than a decent time sink predominantly play games for bigness and content. Because it constantly fails at being well designed.
Although I do always stress that I really liked Aloy's character arc in the game, and people calling her annoying are coming at it from the complete wrong perspective. The plot outside of Aloy is a lot worse than ZD, but fun enough sci-fi drivel.
It's not a bad game it's just a game sony tries to shove down people's throats. we get it, you made it, your still trying to sell it but if not enough people want it then make something else
@Noone2025 Not enough people want it? Horizon franchise sold more than 40 million copies with Forbidden West sold 8.4 million copies. You're free not to play the franchise if you didn't like it.
@PuppetMaster try to remember - a lot of the people who complain about everything online don’t understand how the world works…and I’m not convinced many of them actually play games.
These are the same people who complain that game prices are going up to $80 and then complain devs are closing when their games don’t make money.
Horizon gets made because it sells really really well.
That’s it.
Aside from the forced wokeness in the DLC, I absolutely loved this game and it's extra content. Would love to see a Horizon 3 but...have no faith it will be good anymore with everything going on at Sony and Guerrilla.
Lovely game that makes a ton of quality of life improvements over Zero Down and looks absolutely brilliant on Pro.
I am sure some people have actual complaints about it but I am equally sure a lot of the negative discourse around it comes form haters who haven't played a second of it and are just pushing a narrative.
THANK YOU. I've been a defender of this game for years. I actually like it a lot more than the original, even if the story isn't as strong. It took all the things I disliked about Zero Dawn and vastly improved upon them. Better sidequests, MUCH more fun melee combat, beautiful-er visuals... yes the open world action genre is getting old but I think this game did it best, at least compared to Sony's others in their catalogue. I actually liked it more than God of War Ragnarok.
I think this game is one of my favorites this generation (even though it’s on PS4 as well). The combat is much improved, the exploration is excellent, and there are some truly memorable moments in the game that I’ll never forget.
I just do not like the characters in these games. They are all so dull imo.
@invictus4000 what do you mean by "forced wokeness?" Genuine question.
Its a shame Sony put me off by not releasing the 2nd dlc on ps4, hell it being restricted to ps4 pro would of been acceptable but no. So since then my wallet has been closed. With around 500 digitally purchased games I decided to end my PayStation run right then and there.
Heh and turns out I didn't miss out on much, fast forward several years and ps5 has only now begun releasing a few non live service games and ps6 is around the corner.
Will history repeat, assuming they come out with something killer between now and then, will they lock a DLC behind a ps6 upgrade, yeah why not.
@LikelySatan I think it’s because 2 girls kissed or something like that. Which has nothing to do with wokeness at all lol. But I’d imagine Horizon: Forbidden West turned into a horror film for some when that happened. Pearls were clutched for sure.
The only thing I don't like in HFW is the story. Such a letdown after the amazing journey of HZD. Also the trailers. They showed all of the new machines in them. I wish they kept some of the larger machines as a surprise
Removed - flaming/arguing
@AhmadSumadi don’t hate it but it’s overrated as ****. Like I said the people complaining about Wolverine should have been complaining and talking about Horizon. It’s the most generic AAA hodgepodge of genres and does none of them amazingly well.
@AdamNovice doesn’t get enough hate
I think this series has some of the best looking video game worlds I have ever seen. They are impressive. The gameplay is solid but not something I overly love. But for me and again this is just my taste, not trying to upset the hardcore horizon fans the story sucks. I just didn’t get into it at all. I am not asking for a 3rd game anytime soon and would love to see them return to Killzone and maybe reboot that series.
The protagonist looks mean
I agree, it was a mostly good game with a few flaws. The open world was typical "open world bloat" with a lot to do, but only some of it is really worth your time.
But I loved the bonkers direction the story took. I'm bummed we're not seeing Horizon 3 for at least 5 years. Modern game development timelines are nuts.
Did they ever announce what they're doing with Sylens? His character was such a huge part of these games. We lost Lance Reddick way too soon. I can't imagine they're just going to recast the role.
I did get the platinum and enjoyed it alot, took me roughly 100 hours to do everything and get the platinum
What an exaggerated claim. Most people I've spoken to don't hate the game, just think it's meh. You actually touch on the main issue:
"The setup works fine, but I do think Aloy feels a little flat in the sequel because that mystery that was really driving her in the first game is gone, and it's not replaced with anything quite as interesting."
It's a sequel that didn't feel necessary and that is a big flaw.
The comparison with Avatar also falls flat as even though Horizon is successful, it doesn't even come in comparison of the success of the first and third highest grossing films of all time.
In my personal opinion, good game, but it didn't build up enough from its predecessor and it was somewhat disappointing.
@AhmadSumadi I appreciate the response. That stuff usually does not bother me. I think I've settled (mostly) into the reality that every audience out there gets pandered to in some way. Something like Bayonetta actually grosses me out more than what I am sure is pretty milquetoast in Forbidden West.
zero dawn was great but one you knew what happened with the world what happened in the second game is less interesting
also forbidden west makes the mistake of thinking more is better just because its a bigger game doesnt make it better
@nomither6 Lol, as opposed to Kratos, Geralt, Joel, Arthur Morgan, Big Boss… honestly Aloy looks a lot less mean than most. 😅
I loved Horizon Zero Dawn and got the platinum but didn't get on with Forbidden West anywhere near as much. It's certainly a good game but the story is a hige step backwards from the first game and the exploration is tedious and unrewarding, though the core combat is still great fun and visually it's stunning. I just wish it had a better story and didn't make you go to the far corners of the map just to find some green rocks.
I thoroughly enjoyed the first one and I did finish the sequel but I enjoyed it far less.
The main thing I disliked was Aloys dialogue and her general tonal shift. Somebody online did point out and made some very good reasoning for it which I accepted. Unfortunately even after it was cleared up, just listening to her talk in the way she did still rubbed me up the wrong way.
I couldn't get as invested in the companions or the villains as I did the first time around.
But I am enjoying where the story is going!
And combat and gameplay was still thoroughly enjoyable.
I love this game. Bought it on PS5 and PC, finished it 5 times since launch, it's DLC too.
It's by no means a revolutionary title, but it's an improvement over the first game in almost every way.
Story may be a little off, but it's not as bad as others complain.
And it makes up for it in gameplay and especially graphics...
In every playthrough I found new places that looked so good, I just had to stop and take a photo.
Made about 12 wallpapers from the best vistas I captured in the game, added them to my PC's desktop collection. And every time one comes around it reminds me of the good times I had while playing and exploring that world.
May not be a masterpiece, but to me it sits well above many other titles that people consider "GOTY"
Those who hate it, can just go... find other games, no one's forcing you to buy or play it.
Amazing game, I fihished it with platinum & I cant care less about trophies. So when I do all of them, it means the game is great.
First one was masterpiece & second one is amazing improved progression with better graphics, physics, melee or overall combat etc etc.... Sony simply know how to bring quality.
I jush finished Yotei & it is the same, 10/10 no question. Yes, it is not perfect, nothing is, but it doesnt mean it cant be "perfect"
I've never loved to hate anything.
I think the Horizon series has decent gameplay and a boring world and characters.
This does make me more critical of the sequel because the gameplay hasnt developed much and the story continues to be boring
I'd love to love it but I dont
Yeah I preferred HZD too, the story was much stronger but from a game play POV the second is much better, got the plat in both and look forward to the 3rd!
Have to say I did not like the machine attack mini game though, utter garbage!
I don't hate the game, but I just didn't enjoy playing it. Gameplay wise I struggled more. As you say it's not a massive change from the original do no idea why, but I just didn't enjoy playing the game. It felt like a slog.
Also for a trophy/platinum article you spend 2/3rds talking about the discourse around the game. Really? Feels like this is an opinion piece on that issue and not on the trophies and completing the game 100%.
Both HZD and HFW are excellent games, screw what the haters think. Looking forward to the third installment.
The combat and map are a 10. The story sucks and honestly fighting human enemies is exhausting and boring.
@Th3solution Yeah, true.
Strongly dislike this game and it makes me sad. They took everything great from the first one, removed it and just turned all the worst aspects up to 11. Loads of totally uninteresting tribe interactions, Aloy more obnoxious than ever, climbing and exploration even more on rails than before which is pretty unforgivable in a post Breath of the Wild gaming landscape, story was incoherent nonsense with absolutely none of the compelling mystery of the first game, loads more human combat sections which were easily the worst part of the first game and are just as bad if not worse here, way too bloated with too many weapons and a completely dull skill tree, also the hitboxes were a joke. What happened to being able to knock pieces off machines or ignite blaze canisters? My main issue was they didn't evolve the first game in any meaningful way. Methinks the shareholders were the priority this time which is just sad really
I really, really like this game. To this day, one of the best gaming graphics I ever seen. Guerrilla really outdone themselves in that area. I love the sound design too, and the story is on par with ZD for me. Very strong too. The home base interactions are very good, they give a sense of home to me.
This game was one of the reasons I got a PS5, and never regreted it. Got the plat for this game with huge pleasure. Can't wait for the 3rd one!!
I played this game a couple months ago for the first time and really enjoyed it. I know it’s not a popular opinion but I actually liked the story, in some ways better than Zero Dawn. The gameplay was more diverse and it took some getting used to as I was more of a ‘spam melee’ player in the first game but in this one you have to use different tactics. Trying to just spear everything to death will definitely get you killed. After adjusting and settling into a range playstyle, primarily with the bomb launching blastslings with hunter bow was a backup, it became less frustrating and I started to enjoy it more.
Aloy is a little more stoic and can come across as aloof or arrogant occasionally, but she has her kind and caring moments too. I think her personality fits given what happens in the first game and her rise to be the heroine she has become. So I didn’t mind the snark from time to time.
The environments are fantastic and beautiful. To me, the characters and tribal politics are more interesting and better fleshed out that the first game. Personally, I think the setting and lore of this series is terrific, with its retro+futuristic elements, and all explainable within the world and narrative circumstances. The map is bigger and has more to do than HZD, more than I had time and patience for.
Speaking of, I play fairly slow and thorough, and simply doing a regular playthrough I ended with 78% trophy completion. The majority of the trophies I missed had to do with not using the override mechanic. I just settled into my own play style and left the machine override alone and so there’s about 5 trophies related to that. Also never did Machine Strike or the Hunting Grounds. I left the game in a state of satisfaction and fondness for it all, so I didn’t push myself to grind those last trophies for the platinum, which I was worried may spoil the positive experience. Maybe I’ll go back one day.
It was included "free" when I bought my PS5, so I never felt invested in it ... my biggest dislike was hunting robot dinosaurs in stealth, taking time to stay hidden, only for it to go FUBAR quickly. Kinda felt like I was wasting my time playing it.
I wonder how many "free" copies are included in their total sales figures>
@Th3solution same honestly. I loved the story, and felt it was a good expansion of the ZD storyline. I basically only play games for storylines and I felt it was a fun one with a ton of cool little tidbits as you dug through things. Learning about how our world had impacted the religions and societies of the current world was pretty neat, and seeing how the tribes interacted with one another, their politics and social rules, etc, were interesting for me.
@AhmadSumadi pretty much correct. A lot of people complain the second the main character is female because that alone is woke to them… as if women don’t exist and have never once done anything or been the important person in the real world. Then you toss in some good ol’ fashioned lesbianism and they lose their minds. Like yall, women exist and they do more than tuck babies into bed at night, lots of those women who exist have had moments of romantic attraction or physical attraction to another woman, this also exists not even just amongst lesbians (socially speaking women are often way more open and fluid with attraction than men are). It’s like you make one game out of several hundred where a woman or a queer person exists at all and people flip out. These groups exist, why can’t they have a moment in the spotlight? A game where they get to feel as connected to a character as dudes want to feel to like a space marine muscle head who gets all the attention and magically saves everyone… as if that’s what half of us are like ourselves. It’s no less believable than like Mass Effect’s Shepherd character or God of War or the Witcher or… I could seriously list almost all male leads here honestly. Let the ladies have something for once, they play as impossible sex god heroic versions of us every day in almost every other game without flooding every forum crying about how the dudes forehead is huge and he’s an idiot who somehow attracts every female within a 100 mile radius just by showing up.
Absolute snooze fest. Beautiful, but completely mindless.
Aloy: My lesbian relationship with this random woman is more important than killing robot dinosaurs!
Aloy: My face has become fat for some reason!
Sony is happy to be a circus.
Great graphics, but mediocre story and bland world.
Plus Aloy is one of the most boring characters, in modern video games. And they made her really unlikable in the sequel, with her patronizing and arrogant attitude. I would feel the exact same way, if she was a dude.
Plus the costumes in the game, is so damn silly looking, that it's hard to take the characters seriously.
HFW is one of my favorite PlayStation 5 games. The open world is really fun, the combat is beyond cool. They fixed the first game's inventory limit problems (it was so annoying!). I really like this game. I came in somewhat late to the PS5 generation so I guess I missed the discourse around launch - wasn't aware the game was hated on apart from the usual crazy people on Twitter that can't handle a woman protagonist. My friends love the game just as I do
