Will breach another day

Given the tepid critical response to SOCOM 4 and the closure of developer Zipper Interactive, many assumed that it was game over for Sony's tactical shooter series – but Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida has adopted a “never say never” mentality to the future of the franchise.

“It's not done. We never definitely retire any franchise. It’s sometimes great to have a fresh look at the classics that we have," he told Official PlayStation Magazine.

“We are launching a new Sly Cooper game this year after so many years. Never say never. I feel sorry for the people who are long-time SOCOM fans, and there are many people who still play SOCOM 1 and SOCOM 2 especially, those seem to be their favourites.”

As Yoshida rightly points out, SOCOM was one of Sony’s most popular online multiplayer franchises during the PS2 era. Its popularity has dipped since, but we reckon an HD re-release of the first two titles would prove very popular indeed.
