How do you follow up on one of the best RPG remakes I've ever played? Well, apparently, you just make another one.
Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter doesn't attempt to do anything vastly different from its predecessor — it basically plays like the second half of one giant adventure.
For many properties that might be a problem, but for Trails, this approach often allows developer Falcom to produce its best work. Its sequels take existing storylines, settings, and characters, and then crank the drama up to 11.
2nd Chapter is basically the ultimate example of this. 1st Chapter does such an incredible job in setting the stage that its successor is just allowed to run with the narrative, providing a heart-wrenching plot that's utterly packed with excellent character developments and revelations.
The only issue is that it takes a long time to get going.

After the events of 1st Chapter, the happy-go-lucky Estelle is left in some state. Torn from the side of her freshly realised love interest, she's caught in a downward spiral until her employer, the Bracer Guild, picks her up off the ground.
Months pass during the prologue, in which she embarks on a brutal training program in the hopes of growing strong enough to track down and confront her beloved Joshua.
What follows is several chapters of slow-burn story teasing and character reintroductions, as Estelle and her ever-growing entourage hop from one city to the next in search of leads.
Of course, if you've played 1st Chapter — and you absolutely should have — then you've visited all of these places before. There is an abundance of new side quests to complete, but the pacing can start to sag when you're treading old ground, and there's no real sense of discovery.

Fortunately, Falcom's character writing carries these opening episodes. Getting the gang back together feels great because of how well crafted the cast is at this point, and because the game doesn't have to spend hours upon hours establishing a setting, everyone's got so much more room to express themselves.
2nd Chapter also introduces Ouroboros, the not-so-secret society that becomes a permanent fixture throughout the rest of the franchise. Here, the organisation is still very much cloaked in mystery, and its members make for a fantastic gathering of bad guys.
As Ouroboros' machinations take shape, the plot really starts to pick up, and this is where the title takes off in spectacular fashion. Its latter half is a total barnstormer, bringing a game-and-a-half's worth of narrative tension to a gripping crescendo.
The character-driven drama is right up there with the best that Falcom has ever delivered. The storytelling was already great in the original Trails in the Sky SC, but the remake, equipped with its amazingly animated cutscenes and highly expressive character models, elevates the tale to an entirely new level.

So 2nd Chapter nails the narrative side of things, but what about the gameplay? Well, truth be told, there's not a whole lot to tell — and I mean that in a good way.
Both exploration and combat are 95% the same as they were in 1st Chapter. There's an expanded fishing minigame — always an addictive distraction — but that's about it as far as new additions go.
Battles are more in-depth and tactical from the off, however. Party members start out at a much higher level here, the suggestion being that everyone's beefed up after their struggles in the first game.
As such, you're immediately handed a wide range of character-specific abilities and perks, allowing the combat system as a whole to feel more expressive.

Likewise, a greater variety of quartz is up for grabs — especially later on — which lets you create some seriously strong character builds that simply weren't feasible previously.
Apart from that though, this is the same satisfyingly snappy system from 1st Chapter. The turn-based combat remains slick and intuitive, with both reworked and brand new attack animations wowing at every opportunity.
There are also some brilliant boss fights on display, many of which punctuate the title's incredible second half.
Conclusion
Direct sequels simply don't get much better than Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter. With its already excellent predecessor setting the stage, this brilliantly heartfelt RPG is free to tell an outstanding character-driven story.

If anyone's got any questions about the game or the review, let me know and I'll try to answer them.
Fellow Trails fans, it feels like we're living in the series' golden age.
The first trilogy is so awesome, as well as the crossbell arc. I’ve played all the trails games. The last games suck so bad I quit the damn series.
This, this is how you do a remake. Other rpg makers should take note.
I can't take the wait any longer, LET ME IN FALCOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM

Trails 2nd is currently the highest-rated game for 2026 on Metacritic right now too, what a resurgence Trails has had ever since 1st Chapter came out last year 🧡
If I would play the game would I find the dialogue to be simple and suited for kids, or is this a game with more mature dialogue?
Deep into Valheim right now but absolutely cannot wait to play this one!
Wow, this game is getting incredible reviews. Only twelve reviews so far on Metacritic, but has an average score of 92.
It sounds like a good game and certainly looks like a good game, I may have to give that outrageously catchy soundtrack a listen too. It's good to see more nines floating about, I'm happy for anyone who had this on their list.
I have never played any Trails games, but I will get round to the 1st Chapter eventually. If I enjoy it, and I'm sure I will, I'm in for an absolute treat with this to play after it..The 3rd 'Chapter will probably be out by the time I'm done with 2.
The only downside of chapter 1 was the slow paced bits, a shame chapter 2 also has them.
Luckily there is a Speed mode where you can double the game speed for all the filler inbetween.
I'm so ready for this.
@ShogunRok
Are the starting levels, items, quartz of your characters affected by your save from the first remake ?
I'm glad to have had a gap between playing the 1st and this game so I don't think I'll be too bothered about retreading old scenery, and it's almost a given for Trails games to reuse location assets.
Just glad to be able to experience the start of this franchise with a modern lick of paint (and hopefully the characters not calling Liberl 'liberal' this time round)
I’m so hype for the 17th. My two biggest releases of the year are both coming out, both tearing up the review charts.
I loved Chapter 1 last year (my first Trails game).
I'm currently playing through the original Chapter 1 on my Steam Deck OLED.
Chapter 2 demo had me hooked again. I can't wait to add this to my collection soon!
I may double dip and pick it up on Switch 2 as well.
I had no doubts about it, I just wish Falcom would finish the story before diving deep into remakes. I want to know what happens after Horizon!
@MichaelNau I don't think so, no. You just get access to a few bonus items depending on how high level Estelle was when you finished 1st Chapter, but that's it.
You do, however, get to see all of your previous quest progress from the first game in the journal, which is a really nice touch. Makes the whole thing feel like one big adventure.
@ShogunRok How long did it take you to finish, and what did that entail. Sidequests and stuff or mostly just main line?
Would love to check this out some time.
@ShadowRJ yep a few reviews, seems a lot of reviewers are always scared to commit the time and patience for lengthy RPGs. So of course they'd vote E33 RPG of the year and not KCD2 😄. Kudos to @ShogunRok
Feels like Falcom has mastered all the lessons learned in 40 years of JRPGs.
It is my dream Sony would contract them to remake Wild Arms 2 and other IP they own. Alas it doesn't seem Sony is interested in niche projects, even if their profitable.
@TheArt Hey, be fair to game journalists, they couldn’t even make it past the tutorial in Cuphead, so beating E33 is still a great feat for them 😂
I've flipped my order over to the Switch 2 version so I have to wait a little over a week to get access to 2nd Chapter. Playing through the first remake after not really interacting with the series since those PSP games was surreal, I kept on double guessing myself because my memory of them had become so hazy.
@themightyant I did everything there was to do in around 70 hours. It's quite a bit longer than 1st Chapter, just like the originals.
Hoho, might just save this for a little(massive) Christmas holiday game. Still havnt finished the last Trails through Daybreak 2 or even started Beyond Horizon
I have two questions, @ShogunRok;
1. Do you need to have played the previous game (or games)...?
2. Late into Metaphor: ReFatazio Atlus I started to dislike the game because there were so many long cutscenes etc. It was basically the only JRPG that I have ever played, and it may just be that I much prefer Western RPGs. So, my question is how much does this game lean into being a JRPG, and does it have interminable cutscenes and inane character conversations?
@ShogunRok To be honest within the last couple of games that felt a bit stale it looks like the world building was wasted. I am not that interested in the remake but I am still looking forward to the next chapter of the story.
Do we have an update on the next main series game?
I played the demo of the first one and I was sold. I bought the game, but still haven't played it yet. I really need to get off my backside and do that. That said, now I think I want this game as well. Ugh! What a great month for games!
It's definitely the greatest RPG series ever made.
@Fiendish-Beaver To answer your questions...
1. You absolutely need to have played 1st Chapter before playing this. It's as direct a sequel as you can possibly get.
2. I fear if you ran out of patience with Metaphor, you'll almost certainly run out of patience with any Trails game. They all have colossal scripts and can become incredibly chatty for long periods at a time.
They're generally slower-paced RPGs with a very heavy emphasis on character relationships and interactions, which in turn drive the world building (which is seriously in-depth) and storylines.
@belmont All we know for sure is that the next game's story is finished, and Falcom's confirmed that it's been in development, in some form, alongside the remakes.
We just don't quite know how far along the overall development timeline is. It's entirely possible that it'll release next year, but it could also be 2028.
Fortunately I think Falcom will likely mention it in the relatively near future now that 2nd Chapter is out.
Cool.i enjoy those rpgs and the remakes looks awsome Word up son
Super excited for this, unfortunately I had to choose this or Fire Emblem, and I couldn't say no to a Three Houses sequel.
@ShadowRJ Highest-rated game of the year so far and I guarantee you it won't get a single mention at TGA 2026 given how 1st Chapter got snubbed during the same situation 🥲
I love SC. I’ll get to this eventually.
@Fizza I will say that the review scores have been inflated SLIGHTLY on the basis that not that many people have reviewed it yet. And of course it will be snubbed. It might get a best RPG nom at best.
I will buy it as soon as I wake up tomorrow. Can't wait to play it ASAP!! Sky FC made me a believer, now I want to run the entire pilgrimage.
@EfYI based on thr first chapter, there isn't any mature dialogues, it's very lighthearted overall. There is the usual japanese oversexualized female characters though, animations where there is an extra care in big boobs shaking every now and then, and suggestive outfits
So many great games, so little time!
Thank you for the detail response, @ShogunRok...
Thanks for the review! Looking forward to have the time to actually play this!
Can't wait to tackle these when all 3 are out. Decided last year to start this series from the beginning which required PC emulation of PSP. Stopped after part 2 once these remakes were revealed. How I wish I'd waited
As expected. 1st Chapter was so good that 2nd Chapter simply had to be incredible and well, looks like it is! I'm getting this and Fire Emblem. Goodbye free time! Nice knowing you!
@EfYI @Gaymer90 The sequel gets quite a bit more into politics and the like, and the backstory to some characters is also pretty dark/depressing. I would say it's definitely not for toddlers.
The third game ramps things up even further and has some things that are legitimately disturbing (though there is unfortunately a chance a potential remake would tone it down).
@Andy22385 Wait, why would you emulate the PSP versions on PC instead of... just getting the actual PC versions of the games? Literally the entire series is on Steam and the PC versions are basically always the definitive ones.
@ShogunRok Thanks for the heads up!
The first game interested me so its cool to see the sequel get good reviews too. Definitely going in the backlog.
@Drake oh, thanks for the info, I never played the originals, so it's great to know (as an adult gamer lol)
That is weird to emulate the PSP versions on PC when Steam version is available upto 4K 120fps.
@ShogunRok Robert have you heard that Falcom and Neowiz are planning on remastering The legend of heroes 3 Prophecy of the Moonlight Witch for Modern Hardware.
I started the demo on the first game, and I don't know. It seemed dated and tropey. I do like me a JRPG though, and these 90 and up reviews can't all be wrong....
The problem with going on the backlog, is that my backlog now has it's own backlog.
@kmtrain83 You're not imagining things, it's dated and tropey. I love the hell out of it, but it's not for everybody. I'm having trouble with the pacing of the first of the remake of FC - I still haven't finished it. Definitely finish the demo of FC - it's quite long and enough to understand if you're going to like it or not.
@ShogunRok That's amazing that it's about 70 hours give or take, gonna be one meaty game for me, looking forward to the weekend to play it
@kmtrain83 Trails in the Sky is very classic JRPG with farming elements and steampunk and a bit of magic. The world evolves throughout the series. It’s the closest we have to a Brandon Sanderson series in gaming form.
Dang am I the only one that was super annoyed with the ending of first chapter? Loved the gameplay and world building and side quests, but as soon as the final boss fight was finished and everything after I was just like REALLY…. Solidified my opinion that I was good and didn’t need to continue the series. BUT, all these glowing reviews and recommendations make me wonder if second is worth continuing. Like now I’m tempted even tho I know I really disliked how the first ended.
@Drake @gaymer90
Thanks for the responses🤙
I wishlisted the remakes. If they're like Grandia at least I used to like the games. I tried some older Falcon RPGs that were a little to outdated in terms of graphics, so good on them for bringing the good stuff forward.
Thanks for the review, excellent stuff.
Having finished the first remake I was really awaiting this ones release - I need closure on that! Weird how you couldn't pre purchase this title though.
Just got £100 PSN credit for £85 (SHOP TO) and I'm waiting for download now, though with my rubbish speeds I need to wait 70 minutes for the game!
@ShogunRok Any word on the expected remake of The Third??
@freddquadros Based on everything (Falcom's president) Kondo' has said, it sounds like they're going to do The Third because the team wants to finish the Sky trilogy.
The question now is what Falcom's schedule looks like, and whether it'll prioritise another remake over Horizon's sequel.
MichaelNau wrote:
You get a couple of bonus items for having save data from FC (although i'm not sure if said data has to be a finished game), but no, everything basically starts from the ground up again. There's a in-story reason for why your Quartz resets, which is quite adorably contrived but I can appreciate why they have to do it.
@ShogunRok Is this a good jumping on point or should I play chapter 1 first?
@MikeHiscoe Nah, 1st Chapter is 100% the best jumping on point. There's a recap at the beginning of 2nd Chapter, but that's really more of a "previously on..." for those who've already played it, and glosses over a lot of the character stuff; I'd highly recommend playing that first.
@MikeHiscoe These are for all intents and purposes two halves of the same game. If you started here it'd be like opening a book midway through and starting to read from there.
This is one of the few RPG series where you should absolutely play every single game in order, jumping around and skipping games or starting later on is not a good idea.
