For years now, it feels like story games have been stuck in a rut: when was the last time a new title broke into the list of elite recommendations like the first Life Is Strange, Gone Home, and What Remains of Edith Finch? It has been a while, even with some quality titles along the way — nothing has truly challenged the top dogs.
Finally, then, enter Mixtape.
An instant genre classic, the second game from Beethoven & Dinosaur is a beautiful, endearing, and delightful deep dive into the teenage angst and rebellion of the 1990s.
The premise is simple: three friends are going their separate ways on the last night of high school, and they want to go out with a bang. Stacey, Van, and Cassandra pick a party as their finale, and you join them on the day for their preparations and the antics of the night.
As well as hyping themselves up for the occasion, the trio takes time to reminisce about past events, relationships, and how they got to this point in their teenage lives. They do this from their bedrooms, with interactive objects triggering memories that flesh out their backstories and pivotal moments.

It’s these that elevate Mixtape far beyond any kind of narrative-based effort from the PS5 generation.
You skateboard from each friend’s house to the next, from the perspective of protagonist Stacey. It’s a fun little game of dodging and ollieing over cars while the indie soundtrack transports you back to your youth. This is the kind of setup the mini game-esque scenarios subscribe to: a straightforward gameplay mechanic keeps you going as the vibes and nostalgia of the music, dialogue, and setting become enrapturing.
Without giving away the entire game — which should take up roughly four and a half hours — you’ll dodge the cops in a shopping trolley, teepee a house, skip stones by the river, and quite a bit more.

Each activity plays out like a set-piece you’ll engage with for a few minutes before moving on to the next. This allows each one to leave its mark without ever overstaying its welcome. Touring a dinosaur park is a joy, and so too is exploring each of the friends’ bedrooms. While basic in form, the game acts like a little greatest hits album of fun gameplay styles you won’t tire of.
All that said, there’s no denying it: Mixtape leans into its name with a stunning musical and graphical showcase — this is what you’ll remember it for.
The game embeds itself in the indie, rock, and shoegaze classics of the era, bringing back classics from Iggy Pop, The Smashing Pumpkins, and so many more. Having the tunes playing in the background would be suitable enough, but Mixtape goes a step further.
Stacey, the game’s lead character, has put together the soundtrack herself, and she breaks the fourth wall to introduce you to each track and share the context surrounding its release. It’s a very effective tactic that makes you a participant in the title and provides so much more meaning to each song — it’s like she’s made the mixtape personally for you.

The name takes on a whole new meaning: Mixtape is an actual, playable mixtape from the Joy Division and Portishead heydays. It’s then complemented by original music to flesh out what is an utterly outstanding audio experience.
Matching that is beautiful graphical design which pairs the stop motion animation of its characters with gorgeous scenery and environments. Mixtape utilises a similar stop motion effect to South of Midnight, where the characters move and animate independently of their surroundings. It’s a striking look, which combined with the stylised art direction, provides just as much visual delight as the title does audibly. It’s bright, bold, and beautiful.
Even without the memories of being a moody teenager during the time Mixtape is set, an irresistible amount of charm and wonder will still win you over. Stellar performances from Bella DeLong (Don’t Turn Out the Lights, Wuthering Heights), Max Korman (The Feeling Expert), and Jessica Ma (American Born Chinese) bring the friends to life, delivering dialogue of the time period in impressive fashion.

Jessica Ma as Cassandra is of particular note, who faces conflict with her police officer father, as she ignores her upbringing for parties and alcohol. Ma delivers a standout performance that peaks at all the right times.
As you move from one scene to the next, the game builds to a sensational conclusion that retains the simple premise, yet amplifies it with all the dreamy and curious scenarios of a teen’s mind. Every track lands, every set-piece thrills. The most welcoming assault on the senses, it’s an absolute pleasure to experience.
Conclusion
Through utterly superb set-pieces, gorgeous visual design, and an impactful soundtrack, Mixtape crafts one of the most meaningful story games in a long time. It’s beautiful to look at, a joy to listen to, and so enjoyable to play — altogether, Mixtape is a sensational achievement.

How is the dialogue etc? Does it feel and sound like teenagers in the 1990s (Gen X, my people!!), or modern kids transported back?
Does that make sense?
will give it a go its day 1 on gamepass
I confused lost records for this game last year lol was playing the game and kept wondering where all the classic.usic was.
Wow! That sounds really great.
I enjoyed Bloom & Rage, but honestly this sounds "way better".
I never heard of this studio before, but everyone here has probably enjoyed a game published by Annapurna.
Ill buy it at full price like a real gamer
@Yaycandy if you have PS Plus I think it's cheaper
This does not sound too appealing.
Great review Liam. Day effing one!
Wasn’t in my radar but I’ll be checking this out now for sure.
Thanks for the review. I’ve been looking forward to this. I’ll be playing over the weekend.
@Dimey
Good question! Dialogues can make or break those games
Also, "Gone Home", what a game!
Even "Tacoma" was excellent IMHO
Been excited for this one. Was a little worried that review embargo was on release, but thankfully that worry was unfounded
@LiamCroft Sounds amazing!
Can you turn off the stop motion effect in gameplay like south of midnight??
It just looks like bad frame rate on games to my eye while playing.
Not massively into these narrative-heavy type games… but I don’t mind a decent one every now and then to mix things up. Wishlisted!
What reason is this not a 10/10 cause I can’t see any criticisms or negatives in the review, unless i’ve missed it.
The one con listed seem like a major cop out 🤔
@Jacko11 The game wasn't a 10/10 and then lowered to a 9 due to the listed Con. There aren't any big criticisms or negative points that detract from it; I just feel a 9/10 rating from our scoring policy suits the game best.
@cainhurst94 He's a real man and will pay with blood sweat and tears much to manly for us dude!
Haha
Fantastic review, @LiamCroft! I was not interested in this game until I read it, and despite being in my 30s in the 90s, I do remember the music fondly. Portishead is one of my all time favourite bands (who I actually saw live in the 90s!), and any game that has their music will instantly be worth playing...
What's the ps5 install size for this game?
Ok well now I'm sold! What a lovely review
Just need to pry myself away from Saros for a bit for a completely different gaming experience
Great to see it getting top scores from a lot of publications. Looking forward to it, but not reading any reviews, want to go in as blind as possible.
My era. The Spielberg kids who gamed on the 2600 and came to age listening with the Seattle Sound movement. This will be a full price, Day One purchase. Gotta show the indie devs some love!
@LiamCroft I know it obviously wasn't given a 9 for that con, just seems odd because it reads like a perfect game/experience that earns a 10.
Usually there is always a legitimate criticism to stop a game reaching a 10, but as there isn't one I was curious.
@BIG3 says in the review mate
@Jacko11
Maybe the run time is just short enough to buck that 10/10 moniker that truly great (and big) games are awarded.
Could be a fun thought experiment to hear what would professionally swing the score to that.
The way Liam describes it, many will probably genuinely feel it is a 10/10.
@BIG3 roughly four and a half hours 🙃
need to see gameplay, from the review I honestly have no idea what you really do in this game!
Looks like a great mainstream nostalgia experience. May give go
$17.99 right now if you have PS+. 4-5 Hours to complete. Seems like a good one to stream on the Portal. Their last game, The Artful Escape, was awesome, so I'll be getting this now.
I completely forgot about this - one of those games made for me, sounds a bit short but I'll treat it like going to the cinema at a pretty comparative price.
@EfYI I dont think any game is a 10/10 there's always something in every game that could have been better
@trev666
That's because you're looking ahead - the reviewers are looking back.
They say - has anything ever looked as good or played as great? Did any game ever to live like this one does?
You say, I can imagine improvements in this game, therefore it cannot be 'a perfect 10'.
So I picked it up. 10-15 mins in, and grinning like a fool and utterly loving it
Already had Devo, Jesus and Mary chain, silverchair!!
Is it a 9/10 in the same way an artful escape was? Because that game in my eyes was as tedious as it comes. Only a couple of hours long and still struggled to get through it.
@LiamCroft Nice one dude thanks 👍
@Dimey Yeah I'm in that boat aswell it's so much better than a expected a lot more humour!
Hope you enjoy it my brother 🤙
@Skinny-Pete loving it so much. stopped after about 90 mins, as want to savour it, so will pick it up again tomorrow. Mostly likely a one and done game, but so joyful
@Dimey Yup I'm still on the first chapter myself right after the trolley ride definitely my type of game.
I'll pick it up tomorrow aswell and over the weekend!
Loving the humour and tunes also the 90s setting.
I burned so many CDs back then sold them in school and to friends haha 😂
Hope you enjoy it my friend ✌️
CHEESEBURGER!!!
A big fan of Life is Strange type games, so I'll definitely be checking this out.
I think I still have some money left in my PS Store wallet, so it might be sooner rather than later to support another excellent game like this one.
@BIG3 If you read the review instead of just looking at the score, you'd already know this
I was a 90s teen, so I guess I am adding another game to my Wishlist!
Man it hits different. Especially if you are 40ish lol. Truly one of the most special things Ive played in a long time. And to be clear you PLAY. My favorite game (of its "feel" )since maybe Journey. This is wonderful. And emotional. And outrageously nostalgic
Wow. Sounds right up my alley! Also realized it’s really cheap (even cheaper thanks to plus), so I decided to buy it and support the developers. I’ll get to it eventually. For now, Hades II has totally consumed me.
Had this on my radar ever since it was announced and boy, am I glad it stuck the landing! Even though my teenage years looked nothing like in the game, the soundtrack was the same.
We need games like this; ones that tell a compelling story, that maybe try something different (whatever that might be), ones that don't go on forever. There seems to be a fair bunch of them: Mixtape, A Musical Story, Route 96, Return of the Obra Dinn, Seasons: A letter to the future, Firewatch, Night in the Woods, Journey/Abzu/Sword of the Sea are ones just off the top of my head.
I have a few of them waiting in my library for the right moment when I ineviteably become tired of the next open-world game that's too large for its own good.
And then when I play one of these thay just feel sooooo good.
So, Mixtape purchased, really looking forward to playing it.
I´ve been playing it for an hour or so, really good and the review is spot on!
Road 96 was awesome too.
@Sergo Yup I get road96 vibes from it aswell it's a bit like the 2nd road96 game
This wasn't on my radar but with the reviews, 10% off and birthday money in my back pocket it was rude not to lol
Although I do really like Mixtape, I'm not going to deny it feels like nostalgia bait. Mixtape reminds me of Lost Records: Bloom And Rage. I understand and appreciate that there is well-meaning and wholesome allure to it. Some think Mixtape is woke, and maybe that's a fair assessment, but I personally feel Mixtape is mixed in with a crop of games that are lovely and pleasant, but feel a bit too cozy and welcoming in a way that makes it seem a tad fake.
Also, wasn't Venba a beautiful indie game too?

I've been looking forward to this for a while - its a nice pallate cleanser in-between the more usual game styles I consume and I enjoy a good story game with minimal challenge occasionally.
Given the PS plus discount, and the fact I buy my PSN credit for about another 15% off this will cost me £11.90 and I will buy this to support the Devs - despite me being on Game Pass Ultimate and able to consume for no extra money there.
I hope this does well for the Devs and we see more of their work soon.
It is a great „game“. I enjoyed it. Love the art style amd the music and how it is set up. Great storytelling! Two things I need to add:
1. This is not a really a game. It’s more of an interactive animated movie. No real deaths, enemies to defeat, no riddles to solve. There are fun things to do like skateboarding down the road etc but you can’t loose. Be aware of that.
2. It is based on 90s coming out of age nostalgia. AMERCAN 90s teenage culture. If you are not US-American the nostalgia factor might have way less of an impact and the game experience depends a lot on that nostalgia. I know it mostly from
movies, so I can relate but my European teenage nostalgia from the 90s is very much different. Just be aware of that.
Is it a 10? It might be for some. Though I enjoyed it very much and had a lot of giggles playing it: I would give it a very solid 8.
I've seen some videos of a really disgusting scene online. Was interested in the game but that really turned me off.
As a teen of the 90s some moments of this game hit really hard. A really well done experience all around.
Removed - unconstructive
The variety of mechanics with each new scenario sounds a little like how Split/Fiction was last year. Loved that one.
@lacerz This game had a lot of money behind it, was made by a decent large team and could afford licensed music as well as sending large press kits to content creators. It is AA in all but name
I played it all the way through yesterday and can't wait to do the same again for the platinum - this will definitely be in my personal GOTY conversation and I'm sure it will pick up plenty of awards too.
I loved every srcond of this special game
@a1904
Cool story. Loving the game!
The best thing about it is that you can watch a playthrough online and it will be the same experience as if you bought the game.
The devs care about your finances and that is awesome!
I would recommend watching a walkthrough on youTube instead of buying this. It’s around two and a half hours long, 85% of it is cutscenes. It is a narrative driven game with no dialogue choices. To top it off, the 15% gameplay that is actually there is barebones (and sometimes even illusionary: some scenes play out the same way if you actually put the controller down). A YouTube video will give you the full experience.
For 20 bucks there are absolutely much better games available. If this is a GOTY contender it will be an indictment on the quality of the other games released in 2026, not a testament of the quality of Mixtape. 3 out of 10 for me.
