Halo: Campaign Evolved is an interesting game for a number of reasons, and the fact you’re playing as Master Chief with a PlayStation controller might actually be the least controversial of the lot.
What would have been considered absurd just a couple of years ago has become commonplace: first-party Xbox games release on PS5. Or do they? Halo is supposed to be “on PlayStation going forward”, yet the Microsoft of today might now wish those words were never spoken.
It’s impossible to know whether the series will continue on PS5 — only Xbox will have an idea of what’s to come and where it’s launching — so, for now, all we can do is laud what we have today: a legendary shooter brought back in style.

25 years on from Microsoft’s console introduction, its statement piece is back. The campaign of Halo: Combat Evolved has been remade in Unreal Engine 5, restoring the classic story for modern times with graphical updates and gameplay improvements, along with a set of completely new missions.
PlayStation fans can experience Master Chief’s debut for the first time, allowing them access to what they missed out on when they were busy with Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3.
For both them and the veterans there from the start, this is a worthy remake that returns Halo to glory. It was a revolutionary FPS in 2001, and it remains a genre masterclass all these years later.
At the same time, Campaign Evolved is largely still a product of the sixth console generation.
Halo doesn’t look or feel like a game from 2001 anymore, but it’s still designed and structured like one. It doesn’t faff about with open worlds, skill trees, or side quests — you’re there to shoot the Covenant… and then shoot them some more.
The campaign follows a strictly linear path all about fighting your way to the next objective, where you’ll repeat the process to reach the one after. It’s a very simple approach compared to the games of today, stripped of optional activities that balloon playtimes in the modern era.

You spend 10 hours of a 10-hour campaign shooting aliens. This is refreshing, as it leans into one of the best things about the franchise: the shooting.
From the reliable assault rifle to the surprisingly capable pistol, from the grenade spam to the power trip of the rocket launcher, every weapon Bungie created shines in the right time and place. With the Covenant guns on top, like the Needler and Plasma Rifle, there’s strong variety in what you kit Master Chief out with.
Halo Studios has brought back the full arsenal and coupled it with a few weapons from later entries to provide an incredible array of blasters for alien slaughter. Every one feels good to the trigger touch, pumping satisfaction and highs into every gameplay moment, sequence, and combat scenario.

Encounters with the Covenant — and the Flood later on — consume the experience, as you battle through spaceships, forests, swamps, and alien constructions. It doesn’t have the diversity of a modern single player effort; a lot of firefights take place in copy-and-pasted hallways and rooms.
It faithfully remains a product of its time — which is no bad thing for a title as special as this — but some modern enhancements make it a better-playing game.
Where the original had a single running speed, Campaign Evolved introduces a sprint option. Where the original had two-player co-op, Campaign Evolved expands the capabilities to support four online players (crossplay included). You can also zoom in while aiming, there’s better vehicle handling, and the controls have been updated to suit today’s button preferences.
My one big issue is it doesn’t go far enough with the latter: promotional material claims the remake utilises the PS5’s DualSense controller features, but not once did I notice them in action.

None of the weapons come with any kind of resistance from the adaptive triggers and the haptic feedback doesn’t feel a step above the standard vibrations of any other controller. Such lacklustre support is disappointing as it presented a chance to genuinely differentiate the PS5 version from any other Halo iteration. That sadly hasn’t happened.
On top of a gameplay update, the other idea fuelling the project was to make the Xbox classic a graphical standout all over again. I think Halo Studios has done a solid job bringing it up to par, with visuals, character models, and environments that wouldn’t look out of place stacked against any other PS5 game.
It won’t win any awards; I wasn’t particularly blown away by any single vista or location. However, what Campaign Evolved has managed is good enough. The graphical highlight is its pre-rendered cutscenes, which depict the Halo ring in very high quality.

A performance mode displays those visuals while targeting 60 frames-per-second, and it achieves that for the most part on a PS5 Pro. I had many smooth sessions working my way through the 10 missions of the campaign, only encountering drops during busy combat scenes. It’s definitely not a locked 60FPS, though the visible dips are few and far between.
There’s also a quality mode providing even better graphics, but I don’t think the hit you have to take to the framerate is worth it. The fast-paced combat of Halo should be matched by a high framerate, and you don’t get that when prioritising visuals.
Campaign Evolved also brings with it a set of three new missions, which serve as a prequel to the main story as Master Chief and Sgt. Johnson sneak aboard a Covenant ship and become tied up in what they find inside.
Each new level is brilliant, to the point where they feel like cut content from the original game. All of them continue the mantra of blasting Covenant enemies without any distractions; they fit perfectly into the overall package, like they were there all along back in 2001.

I enjoyed these new missions just as much as I did revisiting the old ones, like The Silent Cartographer and Assault on the Control Room to see all their little tweaks and updates. I also didn’t get lost once in The Library, infamously the worst level in Halo history. That’s what I call progress.
A remixed campaign feature will have you replaying those missions often, too, as Skulls (a collectible type) apply gameplay modifiers to form custom playthroughs. Either alone or in co-op for up to four players, you can test your skills against the toughest challenges in the Halo series, like LASO (Legendary All Skulls On).
This provides the package considerable replayability beyond simply revisiting a classic every so often. As such, unless you want multiplayer, this is the version of Halo to play going forward. It’s a faithful yet expanded and improved remake of an everlasting great.
Conclusion
Halo: Campaign Evolved has brought back a true classic in style, faithfully remaking and expanding one of the best shooters of all time. With bonus missions that feel like they’ve always been there, expertly slotting into the original Halo experience, Campaign Evolved presents an incredible package of old and new that’s never looked better. Welcome back, Chief.

Commenting to enjoy this momentous moment. I never ever thought this day would come!
Great review, Liam!
One of the best games ever made
Halo is officially on ps5. Someone check if hell has frozen over
Anyone know the resolution difference between quality and performance if there is one?
Replayed it via Master Chief Collection a few years ago and yeah, it might be an important and iconic title, but it had aged like milk.
This would want to have a serious do-over of the core systems.
And multiplayer is such a facepalm.
Despite being able to play this on PC and Series S, I must grab a PS5 copy for the sheer novelty (ie oddity)! I wonder if MS was involved with making sure the dualsense wasn't utilized to the fullest (can't have the competitor's port too appealing now, can we 😉)?
„ Poor use of PS5 DualSense features“
Heart is broken.
Sounds very, very good.
@RoliePolie91 PlayStation is the master platform
@Cerny I was kinda excited to learn how the Needler would feel with the DualSense.
Shame they didn't go all-out with that.
this still feels illegal lol
Full game is not on disc...I do not care!
I still remember a friend of mine having some friends over to hang out and catch a buzz and he had rented an Xbox (Blockbuster was out of PS2s) with Halo and DOA3.
Our jaws all collectively dropped when we fired up Halo. The gameplay was tight and the graphics were next level. We just panned the camera down and counted blades of grass, it was so detailed.
Just sat here now on the title screen, listening to that iconic music, it's glorious.
Feels totally surreal that it's on a PlayStation console, wild.
I was worried about ther performance being an UE5 game but once it's OK I'm back on board.
I can't wait to jump into this next weekend. Not bothered about the lack of haptic as they irritate my old fingers anyway so I turn them off. Reading the review I was expecting a 7/10 so I was surprised when I saw the 9...Happy days.
Excellent, looking forward to this, disc arrives Tuesday and can't wait having never played Halo before. Just the sentence 'no skill tress or side missions' fills me with joy - a proper old school FPS hopefully
so it’s basically a 10/10; who cares about the battery draining gimmicks of the drift sense. Glad Halo 1 is good though, now i hope that they add MCC to PS5 so crossplay can be populated again.
Glad to see Halo making the jump to PS5
Would love to have a go but the backlog requires more attention
@MrPeanutbutterz the game is called halo campaign evolved for a reason
Did anyone play this? Is it worth for soemone who never played any Halo?
I always saw it being revolutionary because it was first good FPS on consoles, but can it stand on its own next to PC games of the likes of Half-Life?
@RoliePolie91Ill ask my mother in law.
I’ll probably get this at some point, even if it is the standard Microsoft 75mb on the disc.
So glad you marked the game on its own merits, instead of like some reviewers moaning about multiplayer etc lack of and marking it down.
Enjoy the game.
@species yes it absolutely can stand on its own. Halo is amazing. just ignore halo 5 & infinite
@LiamCroft How does it hold up against Halo Anniversary Edition, I'm guessing this is now the superior version to play?
Still weird that it's on the PS5. I'll play this on GP.
@species Very much worth it! Personally, not a patch on the feeling of Half-Life being played for the first time ... however, different vibe entirely, which oddly felt equal impact wise at the time originally.
The level design is very much based around the fact it's running (at the time of the original) on a console that has to obey the limitations of the platform. However, honestly it's really well done!
It's a classic game, that had the impact on the gaming community that Half-Life had on the PC community.
I just don't think the story got me in the feels like Half-Life as much, but the gameplay was a shift in parameters for how many Dev teams approached shooters on a console moving forwards.
You owe it to yourself to play it, you really do.
Seeing as this is such a gear shift in the direction I ever thought the industry would go, I will gladly be picking this up! I'll happily support Microsoft seeing the revenue potential of another ecosystem moving forwards.
Halo is one of my absolute favourite games, so I'm extremely excited to play this next week; and on a PlayStation, no less. Utter madness! I'm relieved to read it's turned out well, as I was a little concerned that they would mess around with it. Halo is a premier franchise that has been treated poorly by Xbox, significantly dropping from the magnificent heights of its heyday. Hopefully this can revive it a bit, even if it's mostly for the benefit of millennials and older gamers. There are vanishingly few FPS games in the classic vein of Halo any more, which is a damn shame.
The only thing that gives me slight pause is the framerate. Do you know how it runs on a base PS5? @LiamCroft?
@get2sammyb Would be pretty cool haptic when the needles explode tbf, but I'm not sure I'd like it while firing weapons.
Great to read a fair review on Pushsquare of a Xbox game. It's obvious the reviewer is a Halo fan and appreciates it's qualities. Is Halo old? Yes. Is it still better than most FPS's that have followed? Yes.
Another reason why physical sales suffer. I probably would have bought this if it came complete on the disc, but because it's essentially a key disc I won't bother.
@ButteredCrumpet @nomither6
Thank you boys, ill buy it tonight!
Edit - ill buy it on 28th i guess, jesus 5 day “early access” for 20€, hell no.
I will get to it some day. Maybe after Doom. It's a great campaign. I'd just rather stick with Doom for now. That game goes deep.
Is the music the same throughout the game?
I was playing this last night on an OG Xbox and I'd forgotten just how much of the atmosphere, the qualia of Halo, is carried by the sound score.
I still remember playing the original Halo on my older brother's PC years and years ago. Glad to see the remake is great. Could care less about the lack of dualsense features since I plan on playing keyboard and mouse on PC lol.
In 2001 you got multiplayer with your shooter. And a game on a disc. Now, you get a key on a disc (until there are no discs) and no multiplayer.
At least the price is kind of less than it was back then thanks to inflation.
@WhoderMan split screen and System Link multiplayer
Glad I preordered this, mainly for nostalgia and to have halo on a playstation. Wasnt expecting such a high score.
Was tempted to pay for the special edition upgrade but I’ve got so much to play already, will definitely jump on when it’s on Game Pass next week though.
@Killionaire
Yes. I think that this will have cooperative only multiplayer and everyone needs their own MS Account if I remember correctly.
Halo: Combat Evolved is the reason I bought the original Xbox - a genuine system seller. At the time it stood above every other FPS I'd played. I've preordered the standard edition and will play when it goes live - and I can't wait!
The competitive multiplayer is such an intrinsic part of Halo it's a shame that it's not in this game. But as four player co-op is included perhaps Halo Studios can find a way to allow four or eight friends to play online - as it's going to be a long wait until a Halo game with true online player arrives!
@Cerny
So Gyro Aiming is out? I'm allergic to playing anything in first person with analog stick aiming only. Then again, I'm mostly over the entire genre when played on a TV, now that I've spent my fair share of time with VR since 2020, with PSVR & PSVR2. Resident Evil 7 VR, RE Village VR, Compound, just to name a few.
I'm sure we'll get a PCVR mod shortly. Once that gets completed, I'll just buy this on Steam and play it in VR with the Steam Frame.
Is there a way to skip the entire 'Library' level?
60 fps "for the most part" on the Pro sounds like a profound failure to me. But I guess no one wants to bother with proper testing and feel fine leaving Digital Foundry as the sole arbiters of performance. PushSquare also continues their streak of ignoring base PS5 on their Playstation news site.
I played level 1 of this demo many times on Xbox back in day, but somehow never got into this series.
I'm wondering if I should buy this physically on PS5 while it lasts, anyway I can't wait to play this again.
They did a poor job optimizing the dual shock controller. I was expecting them to optimize it like they did for Starfield, ship comms over the controller speaker I was expecting something similar for Halo. Cortana over the controller speaker, ship comms and other communications over it. I different feel for each gun.
@BleedingDreamer
I agree it is very poor.
I wonder if they will patch it, they have really missed a trick here.
I remember first seeing Halo on the original XBOX playing on a pod in HMV just as the system launched and being absolutely blown away. It was just incredible to me seeing a game like that on a console and when I had my turn to play it I fell in love.
I'd also recommend that everyone here watches the XBOX 20th anniversary documentary on YouTube just to see how close this game almost didn't even make it to shelves. Crazy.
Can't wait to play this next week! One of the last bastions of my Xbox days that hasn't crossed over (and easily the most important one) has arrived! Wish it had Firefight as well, but it'll be great to play this again on PlayStation. Fingers crossed for remakes of Halo 2 and Halo 3 to come over as well. Not really fussed about new Halo games, actually; 343/Halo Studios seem like they can't really make a great new Halo game.
Hopefully buying it on sale about this time next year. 🤞🏻
@WhoderMan I was talking about the absence of online functionality in Halo: Combat Evolved. Campaign Evolved has online co-op ofc
I have already played this back in the day. I want to keep it in my memories, but I understand the novelty of it being on the PlayStation system.
The most fun I had back in the day (with the original XBox version) was playing local multiplayer against my buddies.
@LiamCroft The game details info at the bottom of the page says this game is 1 player (4 online). Just making sure, here…
On any of the game modes, does this PS5 version have:
1) four player local multiplayer?
2) two player local multiplayer?
Thanks for the review!
Looks solid I will definitely buy it, I hope all the music is in tact and there's no remix versions. Great job from Halo studios aka 343! I'm glad to see they do have talent, almost couldn't tell from the last couple of Halos 🤷🏻♀️
Im not buying a game that you always need to be connected to the internet to even start, along with the hoops of creating multiple psn and Microsoft accounts, as well as not getting a disc...its just messy. And Halo 1 is one of my favourite games and the first game my wife and I bonded over. We were looking forward to this so much, but if the game is going to feel like we're renting it and not owning it, I would rather stick with the original. Maybe if it goes on sale for $20 years from now, we'll bite.
@MrPeanutbutterz Aged like milk is maybe a bit strong. It's still aged ALOT better than most games that came out in 2001. It's still fun.
But it is certainly creaking at the seams!
Haptics are working for me (resistive triggers)🤷
Edit: man, this game is just as fun as the first time I played it 😭 so many good memories of this campaign.
It's beautiful on PS5 Pro to boot! I've been using the performance mode as PSSR does an amazing job polishing up the image.
@MrPeanutbutterz Totally agree. It was important and revolutionary at the time. So was Pong. I'm not at all interested in playing a game that is 25 years old that I played in college at LAN parties. There is definitely a nostalgia to it. However, for $50 bucks, I'll pick up something new.
@RoliePolie91 Maybe somebody ought to keep an eye on the long-range forecasts for that particular area. If we see another major massive temperature dip (no guarantee that'll happen), that'll be a sign a Switch 2 release is coming...
Review didn't mention anything about audio? Does it support Dolby Atmos / Tempest 3D?
@Deadlyblack That brings up a great point. Does this support keyboard and mouse if connected to the PS5, @LiamCroft ?
I was very let down to learn that there was no gyro aiming in this and it's highly likely I'll just get it on PC once I upgrade my GPU.
The gameplay looks trapped in 2001 to me, think I'll pass. But I suppose history is happening right now, much like when we saw Sonic on Nintendo hardware for the first time all those years ago.
@MrPeanutbutterz same, just last month and I didn’t like the big empty maps, felt like I was walking forever… Reach was much better.
Still, happy for those that are happy!
Halo on Playstation is as magical as they come.word up son
This is great but also the only thing that matters here is split screen and you completely skipped over it!
How does it play? Does the colour palette make it hard to spot things. Is horizontal aspect skewed across big tvs, is there a vertical?
Halo died when it went single player and online only. An now it's back! Give it the attention it requires please
Pre ordered it from Very for £39.99. Its gone back up to £44.99 now though. Really looking forward to diving back in!
@Kriandis That's not even worth worring about.
Mate, Multiplayer is not included and that is the biggest issue here.
The most overrated of all overrated games of all time, Ladies and gentlemen, the award goes to, Halo.
It's chit, but everyone's scared to say it's chit.
@GemDog669 Clearly it's not chit my dude 😊
Glad it's good but personally it's only the MP I'm interested in so will skip this myself. Won't even play it on GP. Weird to see it on PS but happy days.
@SBBuds halo infinite is your what you want then its pretty good
@GemDog669 97 on metacritic one of the highest rated games of all time your opinion is the minority
I'll probably play this at some point but I'm not buying it until I know whether or not they're continuing the series on PS5.
@johncalmc I don't think they will be. But maybe that's just my Xbox fan side speaking
The rerecorded dialogue is absolutely terrible for this one. Everything sounds so monotone as if an ai is reading it.
@Toot1st yeah I've played it on Xbox. I know people here want the MCC but for online Infinite is well, infinitely better. I love playing legacy modes I think it is, like the old Halo 2 days with modern graphics. Infinite has it all, all the maps and modes from the years gone by, awsome game. Shame about Crossplay but I learnt to live with it.
@get2sammyb I'm somewhat indifferent towards FPSes in general - I tried the original remaster of Halo on the 360, and it didn't do an awful lot for me. Is this likely to turn me around on the game?
I am suprised this is doing well with playstation fans. Hmmm it definetely didnt stop me switching from 360 to ps4. Halo is also the only xbox game i cant get into.. just something about the franchise that irratites me (do have fond mutliplayer memories though)
@GemDog669 Nah. That award most definitely goes to God of War Ragnarok, Deathloop or Wolfenstein 2: Colossus.
no true physical... yeah wont be playing this, even though I was looking forward to this.
The original Halo’s campaign was fantastic and I will get this eventually but like with the equally impressive Black Flag (whose original I also played to death) I’ll probably wait for a sale.
@species It’s as the review says a product of its time. Keep this in mind, the level structure and way it plays definitely is reflected in its time period even if it’s had a shiny new coat of paint. If you enjoy older linear shooters you’ll enjoy this.
How's the gyro aiming? Oops, there isn't any gyro unless you're playing on Steam.
I'll stick with MCC and pick up this game key disc when it's half price or less. Add it to the list with Doom: The Dark Ages and Indiana Jones...
@RomanRiz @RomanRiz got it today. Have to say its a bit of a letdown for me. Pillar of autumn Mission was fine but Not awesome. Intro ran in 30FPS. Second Mission on Halo ist really Bad in performance Mode when it comes to Details while Moving. Switched to quality Mode and nothing got better despite 30FPS... I Play on a Pro and new OLED TV.
Edit: I turned Off motionblurr and camera Shake and its way better now.
@Kriandis brother the disc cant even fit the full game, get a grip.
When an overrated bore fest like Halo gets a 9 on playstation, you know the world is on tilt.
@LiamCroft
What's the performance like on base PS5 please?
@dodgykebaab
I could care less about multi-player. I don't even subscribe to PS Plus, because I do not play multiplayer games.
I will just wait for it to drop to $6 on Steam.
@Kriandis
Fully agree with you!!!
I think you replied to the wrong brother!
@LordOfTurnips
It requires 70GB of storage space
New Ultra HD Blu-ray Discs hold up to 66 GB and 100 GB of data on dual- and triple-layer discs, respectively.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray
I guess you forgot when there use to be 2, 3, or even 4 discs for a game, Brother.
As someone who ran through the original Combat Evolved multiple times, it remains one of the greatest FPS campaigns ever made. The original was pure sci-fi action. It didn't need 'correcting,' and it certainly didn't need a leftist girlboss lecturing Master Chief in new prequel missions.
Between forcing modern ideological messaging, re-recording iconic dialogue, altering classic map layouts, and tweaking core gameplay to fit modern AAA trends, they completely ruined what made the original great. Hey, at least it saves me money. I'll spend my time on games that respect the audience and don't view them as subjects to educate.
@BaronLaw This is why when do bring bring out the redone Halo 2, 3 and Reach I'm not buying them. There was no reason to force in that crap. I will not listen to morons tell me what i should think who support the DSA. Anyone who supports DSA is a moron who doesn't understand history of Mao Zedong, Joseph Stalin, Pol Pot, Fidel Castro or the current leader of China Xi Jinping.
@BaronLaw Jeez really, I expect such nonsense was commissioned 2 or 3 years ago when that liberal brain-junk still got airtime in the days of '(s)he who shouts loudest is (s)he who gets heard the most'.
@Kriandis Thanks for that. That comment added nothing of value.
You are not buying the game. You don't play online, and PlayStation is not even your primary system.
AND, on top of that in your first comment you moan about it not being on disc, then you claim you'll buy it on Steam?!?!
Pick a bloody lane mate!
@Kriandis oh belieeeeve me, I did not forget how ridiculous Wolfenstein on the 360 was with its multiple discs. But is that really a good answer? Plop the game into multiple discs? Its really annoying installing red dead redemption because of it, specially when its a single install that goes much faster and is much more practical than the disc version.
God bless cyberpunk 2077 being a free upgrade for the ps5 and a single download.
Do you really want to play whats on that disc? It takes longer to install an inferior version that barely works and looks like a watercolor paiting.
Here's the thing tho, I like physical media, I love my collection.
Digital simply is better and we really need to face that reality and fight for our rights as consumers to have that content available in perpetuity, if we keep focusing on outdated physical media these companies will try and get away with anything to rid us of our digital rights.
@dodgykebaab
I did pick a lane. If I am not going to own it, I don't mind paying $6 to rent it.
@ORO_ERICIUS got to be disabling the Grainatic Ablurration.
"It won’t win any awards; I wasn’t particularly blown away by any single vista or location. However, what Campaign Evolved has managed is good enough."
9/10 - Excellent
a 9/10? I love Halo, reason i sold my PS1 and moved to xbox OG back in 2001 but this Halo game isnt good, AI is dumb as sh$t and thats not acceptable in 2026
