Beast of Reincarnation presents itself like a Souls-like action RPG, and it definitely shares some traits with games of that ilk, but I think labelling it that way isn't quite accurate.
It is an action RPG, but it's not as intimidatingly difficult as FromSoftware's efforts, and it's doing enough stuff of its own that makes it much more interesting than yet another copycat of that formula.
That being said, the game's influences are clear, but it melds elements together in a way that mostly works very well.
You play as Emma, a woman cursed by a plant-based blight that robs her of human emotion but grants her extraordinary abilities. She exists in a post-apocalyptic Japan, one reclaimed by nature and infested with dangerous plant-animal hybrids called malefacts.
Having bonded with one such creature, a large wolf named Koo, it's down to the pair to rid the world of the titular Beast of Reincarnation and save the remainder of humanity.

What that means for the player is a pretty simply structured action adventure. You explore a series of open zones and must defeat the Nushi — the boss — that presides over each one.
Each map is reasonably big and allows you to run around freely. When you're ready, you can follow the main objective to pursue the boss, progress the story, and move onto the next area.
Some maps feel more open than others, but I enjoyed this aspect of the world design. You're given a lot of reasons to poke around; there are optional mini-bosses and lots of useful, valuable items to discover away from the golden path.
The environmental design is also pretty nice for the most part. Whether it's grasslands and ruined villages or a massive underground settlement, there are some interesting sights to behold as you go.

Sometimes they can feel a little dull to move through, as there isn't a lot of dynamic stuff happening outside of battles.
Some maps are better at utilising Emma's traversal abilities than others; using her hair, she can extend roots to the ground that launch you upward, as well as form a horizontal path that acts as a useful bridge. When these are needed to get around, it makes the exploration a bit more diverse.
It won't be long before you run into bad guys, and this is where Beast of Reincarnation starts to find its footing.
Combat is a mix of Emma's traditional swordplay and Koo's special attacks; the latter can be selected while time slows to a crawl, giving it the feel of a turn-based RPG, even though it isn't one.

You have no stamina to worry about, meaning you can keep on attacking. Doing so deals damage, of course, but you'll also build up a second meter that, when full, staggers them, allowing you to pull off a fatal finisher.
Parrying is a vitally important part of fights as well, but if you're not a fan of parries, don't worry — the window of time is very generous.
There are two main reasons parrying is your best friend in this game. Firstly, it builds up enemy stagger meters much more than regular attacks, and replenishes your Entanglement Gauge, which is what fuels Emma's special attacks. Secondly, each successful parry grants Koo a point of FP; this is the resource required to use his skills.
Again, the manoeuvre is fairly easy to pull off, but they still feel very satisfying to do. The game's emphasis on parries and their relative ease of use makes me think of Beast of Reincarnation as a sort of Sekiro Lite.

Koo's command menu adds a nice wrinkle to battles. Over the course of the adventure, both he and Emma will gain new special attacks, and each one has some sort of benefit on top of dealing damage.
Enemies all have a weakness to a particular status effect, so I found it best to give Koo a wide range of element types so you have at least one that's especially effective.
Outside of this, his commands have various benefits. You can use them to create temporary grapple points, bring enemies closer together, launch them into the air, and more.
Emma's special attacks are also useful, but for me they all sort of blur together because of the way they flow into combat. Using one didn't really feel that different from using another.
Still, combining her melee and special attacks with Koo's commands is the key to victory, and when it clicks, you feel really powerful and it can be a lot of fun.

Difficulty is mostly well-balanced as you level up and gain better weapons and skills, but enemies also hit very hard. It can feel a bit uneven in that sense, with some frustratingly fast deaths when you're caught off-guard.
Thankfully, you don't lose anything when you die; the only penalty is being respawned at your last campfire.
After beating each boss, you return to the cleanse walker, a large bipedal vehicle where you can talk to your allies, research food and item recipes, and more. You can go back to it whenever you want, for the most part; it felt to me a bit like Death Stranding's shelters.
It's aboard this machine you'll get a majority of character moments and storytelling, but to be honest, I didn't care much for the narrative aspect. I never got invested in Emma's journey or the stories of her supporting cast.

While the game looks and runs okay most of the time, it can appear a little drab on a regular PS5. There are some low-quality textures and other elements, while the frame rate (in Performance mode) can occasionally fluctuate from its 60 frames-per-second target.
Generally, in the midst of combat, these things aren't much of a deal breaker, although it's a shame some of the big bosses cause some performance hiccups.
Conclusion
Beast of Reincarnation is an interesting action RPG that ties together various elements to present something quite unique. While the narrative isn't particularly enthralling and it suffers from some visual and technical issues, the combat is a highlight, focusing on parries and a mix of melee and pseudo-turn-based commands that feels fun to balance. It wears its influences on its sleeve, but there are just enough fresh ideas that mean it stands apart.

From Pokemon to Soulslike.
Game Freak stretching their legs a bit, love to see it.
Plantses with wolves... Brilliant
Thanks! This was exactly the review I needed to help me determine if this was going to be worth my time before Mortal Shell 2 drops in a few weeks!
Sounds like something I’ll probably enjoy but we’ll see. Will give it a shot at least on GamePass.
Mixed or average, so far. On Metacritic..I will still pick it up down the line. Thanks for the review.
Any word on who actually developed the game apart from some producers from GameFreak? They never did say who they outsourced it to.
Ya know, I was really looking forward to this one - then I saw the dreaded words "souls like" and I was instantly turned off...I mean seriously, are we not done with this yet?? It's like 20+ years ago when everyone wanted to be the next GTA, and only Saints Row managed to come close to being a genuine contender 🙄🙂
Sounds like this will be the Atlas Fallen of 2026.
(Coming from me, that's a compliment)
Will wait to see what DF make of the Pro version before making a decision, but my back catalogue is very busy.
It sounds like a pretty neat Sekiro-like game. Not perfect but adequate enough.
@IronCrow86 I was with your comment on the IGN review and I’m with it here! Soulslike has been such a quick way to pull my attention away from a game. There’s been so many incredible looking games that I lose interest in because of that tagline.
Bout what I expected from them tbh. I'll still play it
Loving it so far. I can say it has charm. Got the plat to Ghost of Yōtei yesterday. This should keep me satisfied till Stellar Blade: Blood Rain.
To think these are the same people that make those Pokemon games 👀
Did Gamefreak really develop this? Sure it's not them slapping their name on a game while another studio actually does 99% of the work?
PC gamepass for the win on this one. Hell yah
Hmm. Was expecting better. Still, I’ve played many a 7 and thoroughly enjoyed them. Will give this one a go eventually. Too many games ahead of it to push it up the list.
I want to give this a shot but will wait a year to see if it goes to switch 2. (my purchase backlog should be a little lighter by then too… I hope. )
It's incredible the amount of people that don't seem to understand this.
"Soulslike" isn't a trend anymore, it's a genre descriptor, just like FPS, Metroidvania, roguelike, or character action. Saying a game is a Soulslike doesn't mean it's trying to be the next Dark Souls any more than calling something an FPS means it's trying to be the next Doom. It's simply describing the core gameplay mechanics. You can dislike the genre, but calling every Soulslike trend-chasing is misunderstanding what the term means today.
Sounds decent, the negatives in the review sound minimal to me, a lacklustre story isn't anything I choose to worry about. Will certainly give it a go later.
Totally forgot about this game and didn’t really know what it was until recently. Sounds right up my alley! Thanks for the great review… Hoping for a switch 2 release personally but will probably cave and buy in ps5.
All those cons sum up a Game Freak game quite nicely, glad I waited on this will more then likely get this at a much later time.
Not the best Game Freak game, but not the worst one either. You do have to respect them though for allowing their developers to do something original, and not kept them in the Pokemon mines forever.
Great review thank you Stephen, I wasn't sure about this one but the review has peaked my interest more, not sure I can fit it in before Wolverine and Control but I'll try!
Sounds like something I'm going to enjoy and will definitely play soon.
I hope it does well and encourages this dev to continue to develop outside its comfort zone.
@Titntin Game Freak have always done this. They have a surprisingly large portfolio of non Pokemon games, though their track record has been mixed overall. Drill Dozer is easily their best non Pokemon game, and it's very hard to find nowadays.
@IronCrow86 Every generation has its genre chasing. PS3 was military shooters and cover shooters, PS4 was open world games, PS5 is soulslikes, there will be something different on repeat for the next gen too.
@TDHorizon We can go even further than that. Doom clones were dime a dozen on the PC. The PS2 bargain bins were full of God of War rip offs. The PS1 had loads of Crash Bandicoot clones. Even back in the 1980s, everyone was trying to rip off Pac Man and Space Invaders.
The gaming industry has always been a trend chasing industry.
These types of games annihilate me even on lower difficulty levels. Maybe if I had save states or rewind...?
@Oram77 haha. I was thinking the same thing.
To be fair though, “Occasional performance dips” and “Some visual rough edges” is quite the compliment for Game Freak.
I wouldn’t be describing some of their recent Pokémon games with such kind words.
@ShadowRJ Thanks for that as i had forgotten what trends were during those times. I was quite young when I had the PS1 and PS2 and i remember PS2 in particular i wasted all my time playing wrestling games, fighting games and San Andreas on repeat. Didn't experience all of the amazing RPGs and other genres during that time.
Interesting the review calls it 'Sekiro-lite', I'm currently battling through Sekiro for the first time at the moment (beat Guardian Ape last night, phew!) and it's a great journey so this sounds right up my street.
Will get on sale though as I've played Sekiro and Ghost of Yotei before so need something next that's not swordplay for a bit to have a change.
@TDHorizon I also wasted my time during that era. A lot of which was spent on those trend setting games. I also missed out on those classic PS1 and PS2 RPGs, and my wallet is paying for it dearly.
Tried it on gamepass and already ordered the disk. It's NOT a soulslike. Like Ninja Gaiden, Stellar Blade and Ys are not soulslikes. It's action-rpg, those exist.
@Dalamar To be fair, Stellar Blade does have souls like elements, though I agree that it isn't a souls like overall.
@ShadowRJ I think that camps that replenish health and healing items, but also respawn enemies is not enough to earn soulslike moniker.
My copy's arriving today, excited to give this one a go and see what Game Freak can do outside the Pokémon license. Hopefully this does well enough that they'll work on other projects more often.
@Dalamar Agreed. Stellar Blade lacks a lot of other aspects that makes souls likes a souls like, but it does have those elements.
@Futureshark instant PTSD at the mention of guardian ape
Perfect game for the backlog until it gets a couple of patches to smooth out the visuals, performance and uneven difficulty.
Great review, thank you, @Quintumply. How long is the game, please? And did you do everything in that time...?
A game which shines in its gameplay and world but struggles with technical aspects like performance and visual fidelity? That sounds like a Game Freak game alright XD
I've always held a soft spot for Game Freak's non-Pokemon works as they tend to offer a pretty distinctive flavour of their respective genres so I'd love to give Beast of Reincarnation a go in the near future myself, though preferably on a discount 🙏
it looks like more of the same that’s flooded this generation 🥱
would love to hear other peoples thoughts on the graphics. i dont usually care but wow they are bad. the equipment screen looks like a 3ds game menu screen. 0 anti aliasing going on just straight pixels even though there is nothing going on in that menu. the world is hard to see has this constant film and fog over it. feel like im playing a switch 1 game. i switched through all graphics modes and there is no difference in ANYTHING. no change in quality or frame rate? toggle has to be dead. im on ps5 pro. at least the combat looks cool and feels tight. but id really like at least one other person to say something about this i feel like im going crazy.
Very interested to play this one, but with it on gamepass, i will wait for it to get cheaper to get it
Haven't played this but I feel like "souls like " gets thrown on so many games that don't need it by journalists. I've played a few that got the label and after playing was left thinking that there were better ways to describe the gameplay loop than just slap the label on that kinda sorta fits.
@Fiendish-Beaver Thanks for reading It's a pretty lengthy game, I think around the 30-40 hour mark?
Different thing tried by the Pokemon developer, so what the heck. Count me in. Looks and sounds cool to me.
@Pat_trick spot on! all those types of comments I interpret as "it's not fair, they didn't make the game for ME!!"
I’ll have to check this one out. Glad it turned out ok.
Add to that the text being tiny, tiny. Mistake on development as nobody really plays theee games on a monitor anymore. Big AAA mistake. Also the voice control is on the main menu AFTER starting a new game.
Thank you, @Quintumply. I do like the sound of the combat...
You think it could be a 8 when patches and updates will happen ?
Didn't ever really get the hype for this, and average scores seem aligned with my impressions... I guess because it's Gamefreak, but not Pokemon? Some of the traversal options and powers seem cool, but combat looks pretty iffy and is seemingly repetitive, with the same few enemies to fight over and over. I can see this coming to PS + essentials.
Physical copy can be played offline without patch

7 is a good score
I have, albeit a bit reluctantly, removed this from my wish list. There's just too many other excellent games recently out or coming soon, and my backlog continues to grow more and more. At this point a game has to really stand out or perfectly fit my preferences for me to be able to seriously consider it.
@dwayne91 Yeah i don't like how lazy gaming journalist and reviewers these days when comes to using "Soulslike" label. They just slap it at any games every time they see the game looks challenging or have a bit similarity with Souls games.
@PuppetMaster @dwayne91 I spend the very first lines of this review trying to diminish the idea this is a Souls-like As I say, it shares some traits people commonly associate with those games but it does enough to differentiate itself. I wouldn't really describe it as a Souls-like.
@RagnarLothbrok Dude you acting as if Game Pass is a death sentence. Look at Expedition 33
Is anyone else getting audio pops on base PS5?
@Quintumply I heard the performance issues from the review copies has now largely been sorted in the post release update, is that true?
@Deadhunter that might not be an audio pop. There's a certain trophy it might be related to.
This game is actually really fun, albeit depressing. Once Emma and Koo get powered up, the combat is awesome. Bosses are cool and challenging. Environments are darker than Nier Automata.
I’m on chapter 5 and definitely hooked.
This game from the onset, had me thinking of the striking resemblance to Wild Hearts, especially the large plant entwined beasts and animals.
