If you were there on day one of the PS4 generation, you probably bought Killzone Shadow Fall and Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag with the system. I also snagged Need for Speed Rivals and a PS Camera at the midnight pickup from GAME, then jogged back to my university dorm to play for a few hours before classes the next day.
These kinds of console launch experiences reserve a special place in our hearts, helping to form our initial impressions of a new generation as early adopters. The actual quality of what we play can almost become secondary to the thirst to experience something new — that’s why Knack still lives fondly in the memory.

In the case of Black Flag, however, publisher Ubisoft released a banger entry to back a banger system.
13 years later, it’s back on PS5 to confirm that wasn’t just nostalgia: Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced returns a fan-favourite to glory with a faithful yet expanded remake.
Here we have the base game restored to current standards with a complete visual overhaul and a laundry list of gameplay improvements. You don’t get the Freedom Cry expansion, the multiplayer modes, or the modern-day missions, but in their place are new questlines and longer, better character arcs.
The end result sits smartly between the two gameplay styles of the Assassin’s Creed series; it feels and plays like the games of old, improved by many of the features found in the most recent entries.
Pirate protagonist Edward Kenway sails the Caribbean seas in search of The Observatory, an ancient structure both the Assassins and Templars are also on the hunt for. The quest weds the series’ traditional gameplay loop from before the RPG instalments with ship combat and ocean exploration.

It’s an experience that excelled in 2013, and remains an accomplished one over a decade later.
Basic mission design and an activity-scarce open world stand out more amongst all the improvements, with simple side tasks and collectibles providing little reason to deviate from the story. Once you’ve collected one Song Sheet, you’ve already seen what all the others have to offer, and every Fort liberation at sea plays out the exact same way.
This was the Ubisoft open world formula during its peak, and in 2026, it’s an example of how far the genre has come. There is a certain degree of charm to its simplistic nature, but don’t expect it to stick for the entire 30-hour journey.

Luckily, in the midst of a main quest, Black Flag Resynced still lands.
It’s a mixture of old and new as classic stealth gameplay and sword fighting are elevated by modern design and techniques. You get a custom version of the Guided / Exploration modes the most recent Assassin’s Creed games implemented, where some objectives are marked in the HUD while others demand you search for them.
A stealthy approach is more viable with a new visibility meter, a dedicated crouch button, and better traversability like ziplines and “advanced parkour” moves sourced from Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
If you’re spotted, the updated combat system now demands well-timed parries and takedowns to eliminate the Spanish and British soldiers. Attacks usually reduce and eventually break their guard, opening them up for a one-hit kill. It’s a simple process that doesn’t really evolve throughout your travels, save for the improved gear.

Ship battles now have more to offer, though: every weapon on deck has a new secondary fire option to unlock. They expand your capabilities out on the high seas, incorporating double fire, extra shrapnel, and even elements from Assassin’s Creed Rogue. There’s more to it, bolstering firepower at the wheel.
All told, it’s an admirable restoration effort that pays homage to the PS4, PS3 original while recognising where it can improve. I found it to be a worthwhile update that’s fairly modern, slightly dated, yet thoroughly enjoyable all at the same time.
I appreciated delving deeper into Kenway's journey; new quests expand the narrative, some of which even extend the plot beyond the original game’s ending.
There are sets of missions tied to new officers to recruit aboard the Jackdaw, a handful of levels pitched as “what if?” scenarios involving the Animus, and miscellaneous side quests that go deeper on story beats and characters from the base title. The standout addition is that post-game content, though, with a full epilogue on hand to continue the plot.

You might not get the full breadth of content from the original, but Ubisoft has put in the work to expand Black Flag Resynced where it can. The new Officer storylines are intriguing, and I loved going beyond the boundaries of the original ending — more content after the credits is a compelling reason to keep playing.
Every one of these updates and additions can only be appreciated in-game, so the graphical overhaul has to do the heavy lifting for getting fans through the door; Ubisoft will be pleased then the final result is so substantial and impressive.
It’s a generational advancement that brings so much life to characters and all the environments around them. Using the latest version of the Anvil engine, Black Flag Resynced couples a remake of all assets with new ray tracing features. It looks stunning both on land and out at sea, with beautiful tropical vistas and lush islands to explore.

The facial models can be a touch inconsistent; there’s sometimes quite a difference in detail between a big-budget cutscene and general gameplay. However, when it’s putting in the effort, the remake and its character cast look really good.
What impressed me most was the new weather system, and how it affects the ocean. A summer's day produces beautiful oceanic scenes with calm, blue waves gently lapping against the Jackdaw.
However, the forecast can quickly turn for the worse, and all of a sudden, I’m facing hurricanes and tidal waves. Threatening to topple your pirate ship, they present just as much danger as any man-of-war. The sky darkens and the water becomes choppy, revealing a weather system just as dangerous as it is pretty.
An overall beautiful renovation, Black Flag Resynced is a leader in how to modernise an ageing classic.

Bringing it up to scratch comes with one downside: the Animus Hub. This is the set of menus containing the game’s silly Battle Passes and premium store selling absurd skins for real-life money. On-screen notifications during gameplay constantly remind you of some stupid “Project” you’ve finished or a currency reward you can redeem, all of which obviously weren’t in the original game.
The pop-ups are extremely annoying, overtaking your access to the map on the pause screen and directing you to a slow and clunky menu should you accidentally press the touch pad when they appear. This crap has got to go.
Conclusion
Like a captain going down with their ship, Ubisoft has remained loyal to the classic Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag experience in this new Resynced version. It’s as you remember it, except better, bigger, and markedly flashier in all the right ways. Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced demonstrates there’s still a charm to staying faithful.

It looks really beautiful but Ubisoft decided to make the physical edition playable only if you do a server handshake. Just like all of their recent releases.
Can't wait till midnight tonight. So freaking hyped.
Good to know it's a somewhat faithful remake bringing some cool new additions. A shame about the Animus hub pushing for microtransactions, a very Ubisoft move.
Thanks for the review!
Too dated for me in terms of the open world experience compared to modern stuff - I loved it back in the day but would just find it frustrating now, but great that they've done such a good job on the restoration for those interested.
@Pat_trick If its like Shadows its the pushing the free battle passes over the MTX more.
@Zuljaras
I don't really have an issue with this kind of thing, it seems pretty commonplace across gaming.
I hope my copy (yes Sony, my physical copy!) arrives today, it was dispatched yesterday. I cannot wait to jump into my favourite game in one of my favourite franchises. I know it's not a particularly popular opinion but I love the Assassin's Creed games and personally, I don't think there has been a bad one yet! Some are better than others for sure, but I always get a huge amount of enjoyment from each title.
I am so excited to play this remaster!
Let's go! Time to sail on the Jackdaw once again!
I love this game, time to purchase and download now so I can play tomorrow, yippee!
Also pleased to see a decent review posted here instead of more click bait, thank the lord!
For anyone who cares, best deal I've found today is %14 off £100 of PSN credit on ShopTo. That makes this game £42.99 today.
Glad this is a great remake. I loved this back in the day but I have no desire to return to it. Hope everyone who plays it has a great time!
Really looking forward to playing this tomorrow I had to get the steelbook from Thegamecollection because obvs. Black Flag has always been my second favourite in the franchise.
99% physical sales inbound, speaking with wallets!!
On a serious note, glad this is reviewing well - looking forward to a replay somewhere down the line.
🎶 A pirate I was meant to be, trim the sails and roam the sea! 🎶
Like a proper fan looking into the future, I canceled my physical preorder and bought a digital copy.
Wow, Ubisoft still has to shove their in-game purchase crap at you at every opportunity. Color me shocked, SHOCKED I say!
Have the steelbook all pre-ordered and awaiting to be delivered. Cannot wait to hear some more sea shanty's again. That was my jam as I cruised the Caribbean.
You know looking at this along with the Rayman remake makes me wish they Would Remake Far Cry 2 or the original.
@Areus FarCry 2 is the best one, I would kill for a remake of it
Time to get "Leave her Johnny" stuck in my head again and sing it to my pal Jonny until he wants to deck me.
This will be my first time playing it so I’ll pretend this is the new entry they’d actually been working on after Valhalla.
@Zuljaras Not hating, but genuinely curious why this is an issue? Do you play your PS5 without an account and have never connected to the internet? Do you play v.1.00 of all games that come on the disc and never apply patches? Do have you similar ire when a game syncs saves on boot?
How come you're fine with owning a Steam Deck but are upset that this game pings its publisher's servers?
I'm so hyped for this remake, it won't save Ubisoft though and I won't touch any of their other games. Just buying it for the Nostalgia factor, I don't even care about the Assassins Creed series, I just enjoy it as a pirate game. Same reason I bought the original. Same with Odyssey, only bought it because I'm a big fan of Ancient Greece and Greek Mythology. Have no interest in the other games.
Shame they didn’t take the anus sections out of this, sorry autocorrect, I mean animus sections 🤭
I'm very glad the game has turned out well! I am also glad you have called out the annoying pop ups that Ubisoft has become notorious for. I agree that crap has got to go, but I love this site because you all actually say things like that. Great review, thank you!
Thanks for the review, Liam. This is the next Assassin's Creed in my series playthrough.
@MrPeanutbutterz I want to know that a playable build is printed on the physical media. Most games I test without patches. Especially on the Switch.
I do not resell my games so there is zero incentive to me in such releases.
On the Steam Deck mostly I play GOG games that are DRM free and very few that are on Steam and bough heavily discounted like 2-3$.
It is about the usability of the physical media. I want to OWN a working copy not a working key for download/server verification.
I have no problem with updates and I use them for example with Assassin's Creed Origins, Odyssey and Valhalla.
At the end of the day it is how much value you are willing to accept for a physical copy of a game and if that value is worthy of your money.
TLDR: I want my copies to have playable build of the software on them without the need of server verifications.
@Titntin usually Shopto has an additional 5% if you enter the code PLAYTIME. It's best to get a few codes when they run that promotion, which is quite often.
@MrPeanutbutterz
Well, its an issue because in case of a server failure/shutdown your physical media is rendered useless.
Its not really a problem given there are solutions, less savory ones but they exist.
@naruball OOO - that's great information thank you! I'll try it next time - probably next month
Skipped this the first time around due to severe AC fatigue, so looking forward to this.
🎶 “Super Jonny bowker the skipper is a rover” 🎶
This and Shadowfall were also my first PS4 games. Both nice physical copies which I still have to this day
I really want to want this, but the lack of high/low profile really makes the remake unfaithful to me. Jogging as opposed to walking by default is a huge difference in how the games plays, and having played Mirage, not for the better. I’m very disappointed they couldn’t even offer normal AC controls after touting a faithful remakes.
I’m excited to play this entry for the first time - it sounds great.
Sounds more like a Metal Gear Solid Delta than a REmake and that’s fine, but makes it less an essential purchase. I think I’ll wait for a sale on this one. It’s a fantastic game, but I’ve played the original. I’ll save my money for September.
@Shirtpotatoes75 oh yeah your physical copy that you can't launch without internet. Sony is very sad about it
@somnambulance I actually loved MGS Delta. Snake Eater was already my all time favourite game and the remake was so good I actually prefer it to the original PS2 version.
Can't wait to jump back in. Now that I'm thinking about it, this might actually be the 4th or 5th time I've bought Black Flag... yikes.
@gordonps
As I said previously, some kind of online handshake doesn't bother me that much, it's part and parcel of modern gaming. I am not sure why being somewhat accepting of this aspect diminishes my stance on my strong preference for physical copies of games that I buy.
Definitely going to pass on this one. When you peel back the ever present mechanical Ubisoft glaze every game they make gets by the mainstream games media; there appears to be real problems with the changes and engine adoptions it makes.
Not to mention the ridiculous Diablo-slop-like skins (that do have gameplay affecting stat changes), blasted via pop up notifications blocking your access to the map button frequently throughout the play through.
If you adored the original, there are some shifts here that may be a downgrade from the original. It's worth looking into what those are. Also important to understand that if the ubibloat open world formula has grown stale, this title has the most basic and mundane side content of that formula as it is an older iteration of that formula.
@Neuromancer I’d say Delta’s got a little edge due to visuals, but I mean, it’s a remake of a 10/10, so of course it should be good. I think it’s great, but I’ve played MGS3 enough to where there was no novelty in playing Delta. I felt the same way with the Oblivion remaster and TLOU. I feel like I’d probably feel the same with Black Flag Resynced. It’s a great game, but it’s the same game.
The pinnacle of AC games gets the TLC it rightfully deserves.
Only 1 day left ! 👍
@Neuromancer
ya, same for me, I only bought Origins because of the Egypt stuff, but I don't really care that much about AC. I did, however, get shadows because of the ninja/samurai aspects, but not because of Ubisoft; those chodes suck, but I do love Viking and Norse culture, so I did play Valhalla, but not because it was from one of the most interesting series of the last 3 generations.
@somnambulance Worth noting the map is now totally seamless, you can go underwater anywhere now and there's tons of new side content including some that expand the side cast.
@Czar_Khastik corrected for you:
Like a proper fan looking into the future, I canceled my physical preorder and “rented” a digital copy.
@KundaliniRising333 Downgrades? Other then the modern day stuff being removed that hasn't aged well as its big plot point was dropped and had to be tied up in a comic its pretty much nothing but upgrades.
Also funny you put down the side content while champion Crimson Desert where the majority of its side content is fetch quests, busywork and clearing enemy camps. Its basic MMO lite stuff.
I started this game multiple times but never made it out of the first city for some reason. So looking forward to trying again with the remake.
Sweet, glad Ubisoft didn't f it up somehow. Definitely will get it this weekend.
@Korgon What will be on sale on the Jackdaw?
I was watching a streamer play early access a few days ago, super excited for this.
@TheSingularity Same. Very over this era of gameplay, even with the additions. It was fun back in the day though and looks beautiful, so hope it lives up to people’s expectations.
No PS4 game needs a remake. Not a single one.
@rollinggamer
Ah good catch. I fixed it. Appreciate it!
I’ve already bought it. Looks wonderful.
I wonder though if there is a ‘Sync or swim’ pun or tag-line missed in this article 🤣🤣🤣
Looks good but not for $60
@Dalamar
Respectfully, Bloodborne does for a start in my view.
I appreciate that the PS4 generation is still relatively recent but I would suggest that the PS4 version of Black Flag was already compromised having starting development for PS3. When I see the comparison between the original and remastered versions of BF, I can't help but think that the remake more than justifies it's existence. That's not to mention the millions of people who were too young to have played the original who are now part of a potential audience some 13 years later.
It's fine that you have a firm stance on remakes/remasters but there are equally fans or new audiences for who a high quality remake will be exciting. 13 years is an awfully long time in terms of gaming technology.
Picked this up at the original launch and it’s a fantastic game.
@DennisReynolds Those are nice selling points, admittedly. If this were 2024 or 2025, I’d be all over this one and it is hard to wait, but Ubisoft is notorious for putting their games on sale not far long after launch.
Besides, September through November is busier than many years in just three months. That said, if GTA and Dawnwalker are surprise clunkers, I’ll be eating this comfort food in November for sure. 😂
Not sure on this one. Played it to death at the original release, and not sure the open world design could keep my attention today. If I hadn't ever played it , I think this would be day 1 however.
@somnambulance Yeah fair enough. It will no doubt see a heavy discount by the end of the year so its worth waiting if you're happy to do that.
I find it weird Ubisoft calls this the"Resynced" edition, but then went out of its way to excise the "syncing" aspect of the storyline. Seems like they can't decide if this series is still the weird DNA-based sci-fi series it started as, or just a historical action series.
For anyone looking for some counterpoints, the PCGamer reviewer played both versions back to back and has some fair criticisms levied at Resynced. As someone who never played this entry, I am certainly waiting for a deep sale before diving in. (As is best practice with Ubisoft titles.)
@Dalamar I think this is the PS3 version they've remastered ......👀
I remember playing the original on my shiny new PS4 and loved it. Have the deluxe version downloaded and ready to go on my pro. Roll on tomorrow!
@Shirtpotatoes75
Where did you buy your physical copy? I preordered mine from target quite a while ago and just yesterday I’m told it’s been backordered. Obviously I’m pissed off because preordering is supposed to prevent not being able to get a copy.
I wonder what would it take to remake the first game.
@Shirtpotatoes75 I respectfully disagree. Bloodborne would be fine with just framerate and loading times patch. Younger audience could still play Black Flag on PS5 or start with more modern AC, it's not like the conveyer belt is stopping. And technology progress used to be leaps and bounds several console generations ago, but now it slowed to a crawl.
@LiamCroft I couldn't ask, do you know how base ps5 performance is at all?
@Dalamar
I guess we are coming at it from different angles fella, technically of course, you are correct in that PS4 games don't "need" remasters however, I love an excuse to replay favourites with a new lick of paint from time to time😂
Have a great evening squire👍
@Locksley
I'm based in the UK me old cobber, I use a super reliable online games retailer called Shopto.....my copy failed to turn up today in the end, but it'll deffo be here tomorrow, so it's here on release day.
@Shirtpotatoes75
Oh okay. Thanks, brother. Enjoy the game!
@Dalamar No game needs a remake. People have different preferences. For some, it's really hard to go back to older games. Just because you don't want a remake, doesn't mean it's not a good idea for them to exist. No one is forcing you to play this.
Can’t wait to play this!
@Shirtpotatoes75 My experience as well. I enjoyed all games in the Assassin's Creed series. When I finish Shadows, for sure I will get this one!!
Looking forward to this one tomorrow.
The Animus Hub sounds dreadful. I'll stick with the PS4 version which still holds its dignity intact.
Does this still have the Kenway's Fleet trade game? I used to love managing that.
@Zuljaras Yup and the reason why I wont be getting it!
You had me at “no modern day sections”
Any opinion which graphics mode is best on the base PS5? 30/40/60 frames.
@Yahooligan There is a video comparing all the different video modes:
https://youtu.be/4MQLa2RwKlY
Probably worth a month of ubi+, certainly won't be buying it though.
@freddquadros
Funnily enough, Shadows has been the one title in the series that I did burn out on, this is from someone with a platinum trophy in Origins, Odyssey and Valhalla. I think it was the crazy amount of targets on that particular menu that resulted in me struggling to follow which targets pertained to which sidequest.
I am about 70 hours deep but had to take a break and haven't gone back just yet. Still loved my time with it and look forward to adding the platinum from it but for now, I am so hyped for Resynced.
Enjoy squire👍
@Shirtpotatoes75 Yes, I too think there is too many targets. But because I juggle 4 to 5 games at the same time, I feel less burnout of a particular one. I have 151 hours there already. But I get what you mean. The enemies can be quite the damage sponges, and navigating Japan takes more time because we can't do a straight line to places.
But I think I'm much closer to complete the content now, so I will carry on. Resynced will come in due time.
@LiamCroft you'll have to address the backlash it receives for the 80$ worth of DLC's added at launch by Ubisoft.
All of them adding ingame perks behind said paywall, not just cosmetics.
@Shinnok789 Those in game perks are no better or worse then the ones in the base game. They just add a bit more flash and OTT elements to the game. Really though are you upset they have an optional hellfire knight armour as DLC or dragon armour?
@Zuljaras All fair points. Could you still buy the disc to play through and move on? Or pick it up when it hits rock bottom prices (which most Ubisoft games do)?
@MrPeanutbutterz Still not worth my money.
If they put it on GOG I might consider if they are not going to make a proper physical edition.
@DennisReynolds Ubisoft's tactic needs to be addressed.
If they were only cosmetics it wouldn't matter much, but putting game advantages behind extra paywalls, offering them as extra content for a hefty sum, should never be encouraged or overlooked, no matter how big or small the advantage being offered.
@Shinnok789 They aren't advantages there's better more useful perks in game, the best sword is Ezio's swords and its free. Also £8.99 for an outfit, sword and guns isn't that bad in this day and age.
@Zuljaras Dang. I'd say the only hope of a proper physical edition is if they launch it for Switch 2 and stick it all on a cart (like the Oblivion remaster, which surprised me).
Again, wasn't knocking you or anything, just curious as you have an amazing collection of physical games (seeing your comments in "what are you playing this weekend" is always a treat).
While I'd still play it, I do feel like Ubisoft have cheapened their own titles with this sort of stuff, ergo I'll wait until it's exactly that - cheap.
@MrPeanutbutterz Thank you
I see that the Resynch is really beautiful but at least I have my Black Flag ALL on cart + DLC for the Switch 1
The layoffs simultaneous with the launch are just aggressively stupid in terms of marketing.
I was never going to buy it anyway.
@Zuljaras I never played the DLC for it! Had it at launch on PS4, swapped it with someone for... Infamous Second Son (a newer game, but they didn't like it and were an Assassin's Creed fan).
Hope they release a version of this at some point that you find more palatable!
@EfYI See also - Doom The Dark Ages expansion launching almost the same day they laid off a sizable chunk of the studio.
@Dalamar
Technically, this was a PS3 game.
I didn't play this originally so this version is my first dive in. There's a ton of jank in this unfortunately. It's still mostly fun but man, I've had multiple instances already in like 6 hours of play where i killed enemies and they immediately respawned on top of me in the same place. Movement on foot is jank city where you never seem to land on the spot you're trying to at close range or it takes your character 5+ seconds to move from one little ledge to the one in front of you, ship combat can be frustrating i.e. you are trying to turn the ship and have the side guns selected to attack but it keeps selecting the front guns instead and you miss your shot. Hand to hand combat is very basic and not very engaging after the first few battles. There's a lot of these little complaints that are adding up for me. It does indeed look great though, and the sailing and exploration is still engaging despite these complaints. I just wonder how long it will take me before these frustrations just build up to a point where they're too frustrating to continue.
I'm really enjoying this; brings back all those memories of playing it on the PS3
Now if they could add PSSR to it, and I can play fidelity at 60FPS then it would be complete!
I bummed it’s not streamable on my portal yet. I’m thinking it will be because Lego Batman and First Light took a few days to go up for streaming. I’m not home so remote play is crappy.
I will never buy a game with pop ups begging me for more money. Disgusting trash.
@MyHairGrowsFast it is one of the most overrated games ever made.
I'm sorry but after 13 years I expected so much more the game is garbage and I'm getting my money back.
