Hands down, Alien Isolation 2 was the highlight of my time at Gamescom 2026 — and that’s even with the demo I played being the same one that many got their hands on at Summer Games Fest earlier this year.
This long-awaited sequel from Creative Assembly is easily my most hyped PS5 game for 2027, and my 20 minutes – running on PC with a DualSense controller – solidified that. Sure, that’s not a lot of time, but CA wastes no time making you feel right at home.

After a brief monologue from Ripley herself, recapping the end events of the first game, I was dumped into an APC adorned by the glow of CRT monitors. Its driver shows off the far improved facial animations, with a character model that could pass as Tom Skerritt’s Dallas from the original film if you squinted.
Creative Assembly clearly hasn’t lost its touch when it comes to capturing the aesthetic and vibe of the 1979 classic. In fact when I spoke to Project Art Director Anastatia Sopikova she confirmed that the studio has access to the 20th Century Studios archives, allowing them to pull props straight from the original Alien.

It was also stressed that while the franchise has endured and seen much success in other forms like the 2024 hit Alien: Romulus or even the newly released Aliens Fireteam Elite 2, the team is focusing purely on that original film. Alien Isolation 2, like the first game before it, is a celebration of the world that Ridley Scott established almost 50 years ago.

But that doesn't stop Alien Isolation 2 from making some key changes from its predecessor, like kicking you out of that APC, into a wind-swept and rain lashed external environment. When out on a patrol, some kind of object crash lands onto the planet which leads Blake, the player character, and a Weyland-Yutani exec commands her team to go on foot to investigate.
Stepping out of that APC, I was immediately struck by the sound design, which opens up to a vast and harsh soundscape that’s slashed by rain and blasted by brutal winds. And what’s worse: a storm is on its way, and we’re quickly informed that these are not like the kinds we have here on Earth.
Exploring these barren woodlands, following the burned snapped branches towards the crashed vessel, it’s insane how quickly you lock into this world. It feels tangible and impeccably immersive, helped all the more by brilliant haptic feedback support that brings the roaring thunder to life.
The lighting is equally impressive as lightning dashes shadows of stark branches across the ground, and a glowing flare blooms a red hue across it all. But then you see it, an offshoot vessel of some kind, which fans will know to be the lab from the Sevastopol station that Amanda Ripley jettisoned in the first game. Unbeknownst to Blake, the perfect organism lurks inside.

But even still, Creative Assembly wants you to soak in the environment. Its interior design feels familiar for fans of the original game, but gives it a lovely polish with the aforementioned lighting. For me, the upgrade was a nice and seamless evolution. It feels new and modern, which a full generation’s wait will do to a sequel, but it still felt you could play these games back-to-back.
The demo plays brilliantly with that sense of tension as you know what will be found within these walls. But quiet sound design and some killer iconography make this ominous lab a delight to explore. I adored that you could still hear the muffled storm bustling just outside its walls.
The game has also made nice little changes to gameplay, like having to hold Square at the iconic save points or having to press Cross/X to open doors rather than them opening automatically. It’s little tweaks like this that add a pinch of extra tension.

And then the big lad turns up. The Xeno’s introduction is much more sudden than what we got with that grating reveal back in 2014, but it is a masterful moment of suspense and wonder. The design of the Xenomorph is gorgeous and this was the moment I really felt that graphical jump. The way the light plays off that slick glossy material and it lets you bask in its glory, defining one of the most iconic silhouettes in sci-fi horror.
Then we’re back in business, sneaking around a killer with no way to defend yourself. A bottle can be used to distract the Xeno, but you’ll primarily be peeking from under desks and sneaking through under floor vents. An awesome feature saw the thuds of the Xeno’s footsteps rumbling through the DualSense controller, and you could still feel and hear them even as it explored other parts of the lab. It reminded me a lot of the nerve-wracking thuds of Mr. X’s stomping in Resident Evil 2.
I think a mark of just how successful this opening is for Alien Isolation 2 is noticing how tense I was upon completing it. I’d often say anywhere around 30 minutes can be too short a time to really get a sense of a game, and for sure there are many questions I still have for the full release.
But within minutes I was transported into this retro-tech sci-fi world, and the bustle of Gamescom, the other press members playing the game around me, and even the members from Creative Assembly faded away. I think we could be on to a winner here.
Are you looking forward to Alien Isolation 2? Has this hands-on preview raised your hype levels at all? Let me know below.

Still need to play the first game (performance is much improved on the Pro btw), but sounds like we could just jump in here and be fine? Either way, sounds fantastic!
Looking great. I hope it's as good or better than the original.
So happy this franchise has seen such a quality resurgence.
This is exciting, I didn’t want to read too much of that for spoilers though. I didn’t realise this was quite so far along. I’m really surprised and happy they have managed to make this, it didn’t look likely at all not too long ago. Guaranteed day one for me, which is rare to say these days.
Looks like we're gonna spend hours shivering and holding breath inside the locker or under the table again 😱
Really looking forward to this, adored Alien Isolation so very much. For a moment I truly believed it had been shelved, as SEGA and Creative Assembly were both incredibly tight lipped following the initial release and positive reception, regarding a sequel.
Now just a countdown until release date! Can't wait to find an object to hide in and say words of encourage to myself out loud to get me to tackle (run away from whilst whimpering and cackling nervously) a Xenomorph.
You've just ramped up my already massive hype for this game. The original is one of the greatest experiences I've ever had with a video game. I only played through it for the first time a few months before the sequel was announced. I was gutted when it was over as I assumed it was a one off and I'd never play anything like it again. But here we are - Alien Isolation 2 previews are live and it appears to be just as good as the original.
It’s hard to talk about Gamescom right now after a couple of developers came out and said their laptops containing early builds and important data were stolen overnight.
@danzoEX It's even worse hearing it happened to Indie Developers, I heard someone took a whole PC one year.
So glad they are finally coming with a second installment... it took them WAY TOO LONG! The first one is a gem.
This is such an easy lay-up for a big W, all they need to do is not drag out the ending section... I also think it's time that Alien Isolation 1 got a PS5 version, just saying.
Its my most hyped game for next year, so im glad to hear its still gonna be a tense and scary experience like the original.
I think Alien isolation is the best survival horror game ever made
Looking forward to this, loved the 1st one.
Also I've seen every Alien film and have to say Alien: Romulus is probably my fave film of the entire franchise, saw it in cinema twice. Also love Aliens. I thought Alien: Covenant was terrible.
@Neuromancer I’ve got some bad news for you…Ridley’s not finished and the sequel to covenant is allegedly back on. Possibly at the expense of a Romulus sequel.
I thought the first one was a bit long but it's one of those games that's stuck with me all these years later. Excited for the sequel.
Great preview, Aaron.
@ear__wig shame its not 60 fps on ps5 as it is now on xbox series x
ive never really understood the sentiment that alien isolation is too long I loved it didnt want it to end. wanted more of it so i got the dlc and now a sequel
The game looks very promising. Claustrophobic, atmospheric, foreboding and still faithful to the source material. Very happy about that. The article, however, read like a stream-of-conciousness blog. Not good.
@Neuromancer Alien 3 was a travesty. Killing Newt after spending 3 quarters of a film getting the audience invested in caring about her stayong alive and replacing her with unlikeable criminals you couldn't give a crap about was exactly what James Cameron said about it, 'the stupidest ***** thing' they could've done.
@Thelegend159 I wish Scott would retire already, he hasn't made a good film since 2015.
@TheDarts I'll admit Alien 3 isn't great, but I prefer the Director's cut over the Theatrical cut. Still better than Covenant.
@Dan12836666 With all the 60fps updates/remasters given to games recently, Alien Isolation should be one that gets that treatment. It's beloved and has a fan base, let's hope Creative Assembly comes through. Especially as Xbox already has 60fps
I might watch someone else play but somehow I’ve become more scared of horror games as I get older.
@Neuromancer I agree, but then I'm not a fan of most of the films after Aliens. However, Prometheus and the parallels it set up with Christianity, religion and faith, and Elizabeth's 'pilgrimage'eschewing the Engineer's nullification of belief to still look for answers from 'God' were far more interesting than David becoming the focal point in Convenant and us getting a bland, convetional story about a robot with a God-complex. Total betrayal of the first film's set-up.
@TheDarts Alien 3 by William Gibson (Writer of the Sprawl trilogy) is a pretty good alternative version of Alien 3. There's a comic book & audiobook adaptation.
I missed the fact gameplay footage emerged, or more pertinantly location. Looks to be in the thick of it am buzzing
@Neuromancer thanks for the info
@Neuromancer @TheDarts Totally agree. Covenant is a good film in that it’s a good film if you separate it from Prometheus and potentially the Alien IP mentally. It’s not a bad film if it’s a standalone, but… that’s also a big problem with the film… it doesn’t have the ability to be a standalone film as it relies on being a certain kind of flimsy tape between Prometheus and Alien to exist.
Prometheus is definitely one of my absolute favorite films of all time. It succeeded as a film largely because it didn’t answer questions and instead told you to embrace the mystery and knowledge that some answers are untold. Also, it was an Alien prequel that didn’t use the crutch of its IP to sell itself. It was perhaps one of the most clever inversions of utilizing an established IP to go someplace completely different with it and expand its universe.
How Covenant responded to the tone of Prometheus was absolutely frustrating. One of the most frustrating sequels I’ve ever seen. To jump from something that largely sidesteps the cliches to something that is devout in its approximation of them… it was jarring. It felt totally contradictory to everything set up in Prometheus to the point where I can’t even acknowledge that Covenant exists most of the time because it ruins my experience of Prometheus.
I dunno. I can acknowledge Covenant was artfully made, but maybe I just don’t like where they went with it? I dunno. I’d take a sequel to it if it’s a better sequel.
I liked Romulus, but felt like it was sort of a good version of today’s Hollywood trends in milking an already established IP. It’s good in most every way, just lacking that special spark that makes a film seem like it’s a universe unto itself, as the original Alien film did, Prometheus did, and perhaps even Aliens did, as Aliens was such a tonal shift even if it used all the same components. It’s sort of like how Terminator and Terminator 2 feel so radically different, you know?
When my son is old enough to watch the Alien films, we’re skipping that one. And Alien 4. Maybe Alien 3. There’s things I like about Alien 3, but it’s also largely unnecessary as a film. It’s rote 90’s action sequel territory, even if it’s a good time.
@somnambulance I think if all your kid watched is Alien and Aliens 2 he'd doesn't need anything else. There no tonal shift greater in films than that between those two films 😀
Unless you let him watch Prometheus and after go to YouTube where there's a couple of excellent videos that break the film down, explain the lore and go on to help resolve the story far better than the turd that is Covenant.
I agree if Covenant were standalone and Prometheus didnt exist it'd be ok albeit utterly predictable and forgettable. As a sequel to a prequel it wasn't Force Awaken bad but it wasn't far off.
Alien Isolation is in my top 10 games of all times. But 60fps treatment needed before Alien Isolation 2. I would gladly replay it on PS5 if will be updated to 60fps.
@Neuromancer I recently read the unproduced screenplay by William Gibson (Johnny Mnemonic, Neuromancer) I like David Fincher's work but I would have liked to seen that version made too. Gibson's is more like a Cold War in space between UPP (Union of Progressive Peoples) and Weyland-Yutani, they use the the Xenomorphs as a biological weapons and Ripley sleeps through most of it. I say read but I mean audio, I've listened to a lot Aliens/Predator books. Great for gaming too. Cold Forge was brilliant too. I think it was Furious who pointed me towards Gibson's work, I'd finished Cyberpunk and wanted to try the genre in books too.
That's the one, they hired both Michael Biehn and Lance Henriksen for the recording.
@ear__wig I have the game but ill probably get a hartattack while playing it. I can't stand excessive gore but my favorite genre on Netflix is horror.😅
Day1 for me. Loved the first one.
I love horror games yet this is one I'm too scared to play once the xenomorph is introduced properly.
I read that I should deliberately get killed by it a few times so that the 'fear' of that happening is lessened. Might try it one day.
No theatrical release beyond Aliens and Predator 2 has been a positive contribution to the franchises. Doggy doo hot garbage.
Isolation taught me that I could enjoy Survival Horror games.
Really enjoyed the SH2 remaster
I'm now knee deep in RE4: PSVR2 and it is amazing
@somnambulance Nah, Alien 3 is a masterpiece. It brought the horror back and was much more in line with the 1st movie. A fitting end to the OG trilogy.
Covenant though is a case of Ridley letting himself be convinced by a vocal minority that the xenomorph needed to be back in focus, so he botched his original plan of the prequel series. Instead of Prometheus: Paradise Lost, we got a far less engaging and run of the mill movie with a much more cliched focus on David. It alienated the new fans that was brought on board with Prometheus and was far less successful at the box office, effectively killing his prequel series.
And now we have Ridley messing up the sequel to Romelus. Alvarez first movie was a greatest hits montage for sure, but it had excellent world building and we were set up for a creative sequel that could go in it's own exciting direction. But of course Ridleys ego couldn't allow that and he has now gotten Alvarez off the project. Such a shame. It should have been two separate projects; let Ridley finish his sequel and let Alvarez do the Romolus sequel as intended.
The number 1 on my list…… Still playing part 1 once in a while. Love it.
I’ll enjoy watching others play this. I’m too scared to play for myself haha.
Never saw this at gamescon
@havoc33 @TheDarts I mean, yeah, Prometheus, Alien, Aliens basically is the essentials of the series. I liked Romulus and Alien 3, but neither one actually feels essential to me.
See, maybe I need to watch the Director’s cut of Alien 3 or something. It’s been a while since I’ve seen the film, admittedly, but I remember thinking Alien 3 pivoted the tone of the series in a gritty, grunge way (very 90’s) and it just felt very ok to me. I’ll have to rewatch it. My thoughts may be from watching the film once back-to-back with Alien 4, and I really did not like that one.
@somnambulance the problem with Alien 3 was that after watching Ripley and the others fight and die trying to survive and keep Newt alive for two hours, having Newt die off-screen, a despicable decision that instantly turned me off to the film, and Ripley ending up with a bunch of unlikeable criminals I couldnt give a crap about, the entire film was a chore to watch and a terrible sequel. It actively tried to disenfranchise me from the start, subvert my expectations and replace them with a story fitting for a off-shoot movie, like Rogue One is with Star Wars, rather than a mainline sequel that deliberately throws out all the momentum and investment we built watching the previous film.
Pure hubris to try to recreate the horror and tension of Alien by rendering Aliens pointless and inconsequential, and on top of that failing to recreate Alien because not a single character in Alien 3 was someone I could care about living or dieing. Including Ripley which is testament to how poor Alien 3's execution was.
Played the first one, loved it but I cheated my way through it. Such is life.
I was hoping this would arrive before discs get discontinued, I didn't realise how far ahead in development this was. I'll be looking forward to this one.. I enjoyed the first one but I still need to play through some of the extras
Let's rock
Currently playing the first game (PS4 backward compatible PS5) due to 'word of mouth'. From my experience, it is easily equal top non 2026 title. If this is out next year, then it's easily a Day1 buy for me. Also hope the physical edition includes a download code for the 1st game for those who cannot get a copy.
I hoped that they will never finish Isolation 2. I loved the first game, it was brilliant, but I dont want to get another 17 heart attacks again.
I hate you creative & sega ... but I cant wait
Alien is my xmas movie for 15 years & Aliens new years eve movie
@TheDarts Come on now, Clemens, Dillon and Morse all had their moments. Aliens was a great movie, but very much a product of it's time, just like Alien 3 was. Aliens was a pure 80s over the top gung ho marines movie, but personally I don't think Ripley, Newton and Hicks setting off to live a happily ever after would make for a fitting continuation of the series. How Ripley ended her life to basically kill the Alien once and for all was a very powerful way to end the trilogy, especially after all the heartache she endured.
