Playing video games is a hobby designed to be enjoyable, so why has a wave of new Marvel's Wolverine previews been met with ridicule and slander? Despite the fact such pre-release verdicts were generally very positive, inaccurate videos have spread claims about the next PS5 exclusive that simply aren't true.
The misinformed hate has been so bad that it's gotten back to Insomniac itself, and that's not okay.
Going into this preview with the knowledge of what's happened since the initial wave of articles hit the Internet, it set up something of a rare opportunity to dispel some myths. This is my preview, but also clarification. I played the same two and a half-hour preview build other outlets were given access to, so here are some standout points from the experience along with setting the record straight on a few things.
This Is a Cinematic Action Game
Insomniac will tell you Marvel's Wolverine is an action adventure game, but in practise, it's far more the former than it is the latter.
You are primarily playing this game to tear flesh from limb as Logan.
While there are quiet moments to chat to fellow superheroes, explore a bar, or master a minigame or two, much of the campaign is structured around action-packed missions all about combat. It's streamlined compared to Marvel's Spider-Man, as Insomniac opts for a linear approach that leaves little room for optional activities and side quests.
It gets to the point.
Following a generation of open world efforts some people have fatigue from, Marvel's Wolverine offers high-quality gameplay, action, story, and visuals all at a more consistent pace than a Marvel's Spider-Man or Horizon Zero Dawn.
You need only push forward to experience it.
Combat Is the Focus, and There Are Combos
Marvel's Wolverine is not just mashing the square button, as some would want you to believe. Just like every action title since the birth of the genre, there is a basic attack button.
However, the game quickly introduces combos to perform and a skill tree provides additional abilities on top. Is it on the level of a Devil May Cry? Absolutely not. That doesn't mean it needs to be reduced to ridicule, though: Wolverine is not a single-button game; there's a good amount of depth to explore.
It's essential you engage and experiment with that depth because fighting is what a lot of the campaign will have you do. More often than not, seemingly, a combat encounter carries you from one scenario to the next. Let us hope there's enough to the system to entertain us the entire time.

The Quick-Time Events and Button Prompts Are Not a Big Deal
Right, let's sort this out. Inaccurate and deceiving social media videos have made Marvel's Wolverine out to be a QTE-fest.
Since I played the demo this week instead of at the Insomniac Games event, I went into my session with this knowledge and wanted to actually put it to the test. I made a point of counting every single sequence of QTEs and on-screen button prompts I saw during the preview.
Across almost two and a half hours of playtime, I got six of them.
You're free to dislike them, of course, but I see very, very little issue encountering one every 20 to 30 minutes.
Stealth Is Entirely Optional
Don't worry, you don't have any Mary Jane-esque levels to moan about in Marvel's Wolverine: stealth is entirely optional in the new game.
Stealth takedowns are possible and there's grass to hide from enemies in, but this is an approach you can ignore entirely if you want. It's not a game over if you're spotted, so the focus on the mechanic has been drastically reduced.
Wolverine Has a Revive Mechanic
Compared to Spider-Man, developer Insomniac has had to work out how it handles Wolverine's regenerative abilities.
It's done this in two ways: a revive mechanic and a healing attack.
The latter is a simple one, as you strike a staggered enemy and you get a chunk of health back. The former, meanwhile, removes a chunk of your Rage meter and turns it into a revive once you lose all your health. If you don't have enough Rage to trigger a revive, then you do actually die.

There's Scope for Character Builds
Alongside levelling up and unlocking abilities, the game has an Adaptations function that could be used to make character builds.
On this screen, you can select a certain number of Adaptations to activate, and they all relate to a different aspect of the combat system. You could make your stealth kills better or improve the Rage meter, for example.
This isn't an RPG where my Wolverine will be completely different to yours, but this is an extra layer of customisation that lets you apply flair where you want it.
Nightmare Doors Offer Challenges and Story
For some reason, some channels on social media thought to make fun of a door animation... because it's tied to an important plot point in the game: discovering Logan's past.
In reality, when you're actually playing Marvel's Wolverine, these are called Nightmare Doors. They're optional activities that provide combat and traversal challenges to complete, with gold, silver, and bronze times to beat. For completing them, you earn a sort of totem you can display within the room Nightmare Doors lead to. These little totems also come with an audio log that provides more context on the backstory of Wolverine.

At Least 25 Suits Can Be Unlocked
It's not a superhero game without a selection of suits to pick from, and Marvel's Wolverine has at least 25 of them. A screen in the pause menu had 27 slots for suits in total, but it's possible more could appear as you progress the story. I'll say there are at least 25 suits in the game, just to be safe.
Whiskey Bottles Are Your Collectibles
Switching to a linear structure rather than utilising an open world, Marvel's Wolverine has reduced the scope of its collectibles. There are no Spider-Bots or backpacks to find, but Whiskey Bottles can be picked up and added to a little collection. These are your main form of collectibles in the game.

Yeah, That Sentinel Boss Fight Isn't Great
The one complaint I do find myself agreeing with relates to the Sentinel boss fight featured in the previews and released footage.
You fight the torso of a gigantic robot that's trapped in rubble, and it swings at you with its arms and fires laser beams. This is a very tedious encounter with a health bar that takes forever to whittle down.
I didn't enjoy it in the moment, but I think it's worth putting this criticism into context. The boss fight comes immediately after a time skip in the demo; it starts at the very beginning of the game and then fast-forwards to this encounter at the end of act one.
This time skip automatically unlocks more abilities to use, but they're all dumped on you at once in the preview. Playing the full game, you'd have mastered these skills by the time you reach the Sentinel — it's possible this battle plays out much quicker with the understanding and experiences leading up to it under your belt.

Marvel's Wolverine is shaping up to be another fantastic addition to Sony's prestige first-party lineup; it offers all of the high-quality gameplay, design, visuals, and fun factor you'd want from an Insomniac Games joint. My preview session had the lot — on the basis of act one, it's another PlayStation Studios masterclass.
If you enjoyed everything Insomniac Games has put out so far under PlayStation's wing, I see absolutely no reason why you wouldn't fall in love with Marvel's Wolverine. I think it's still got some ways to go to convince me it could be a proper Game of the Year contender, but then the full game is only a handful of weeks away now. We will have it all by this time next month.
Marvel's Wolverine releases for PS5 on 15th September 2026. Have you got your pre-order locked in yet? Let us know in the comments below.

I’m not convinced this sort of tone is likely to change any minds. There’s a malaise around Sony exclusives and insisting that people are wrong to feel a certain way about a game is not the way to dispel that.
@nessisonett There’s a disinterest, and then there’s flat out misinformation. This addresses the latter, and I didn’t insist anyone is wrong.
I'm sure it's fine but at £70...linear...in a packed latter part of the year...when there's Dawnwalker, Onimusha, others for a bit less, people are going to question if it's really bang for your buck. In the UK, this and $2B-GTA6 are both £70 😆. So much for GTA6 setting the precedent for increased prices.
Not going to lie, it just sounds ok. No risks taken, good story, good mechanics, good gameplay. Nothing innovative, though. Hope I'm wrong! I'm sure it'll be a fun game at least
This goes way beyond a cynical look at PlayStation. This goes way beyond video games. There's a legitimate collective, cultural insistence on finding things to hate about everything nowadays. Maybe it's the fact that I'm older and these trolls are (hopefully) much younger, but I just can't wrap my head around being so f**king miserable that I have to take the wind out of every sail I see.
Wolverine looks to be a fun comic book spectacle. I actually really like that it's linear and not open world. It won't win GotY, but it doesn't need to. Much like it's movie counterparts, these are designed to be fun, safe, accessible, and entertaining. It doesn't need to be more. Would it be cool if it was? Yes. Am I all that disappointed that it isn't? No.
You can have valid concerns or criticisms of products that companies are trying to sell you, but flat out lying to get internet clout is just pathetic.
Game is Spider-Man but with Wolverine. But no on was crying about things when Spider-Man released so it didn’t face the onslaught from jaded gamers.
Just to look at what can be rendered in-engine, both real-time and then when no input is required, is simply astounding.
I am lucky enough to have worked alongside some people from Insomniac, and may again down the road and I shall always be grateful for what they bring to the table.
Not one conversation ends in how they can't achieve something, it's about how not yet do they know how, but will set people on figuring it out.
Truthfully, the storyline could be just picking cabbages from a field whilst being shot at by Mr Blobby, and I would still buy this based purely on a perspective of wanting to admire the artistry behind the game itself.
I personally take no issue to people loving it, hating it, hating Sony, wanting to leave the platform, not buy exclusives, but I shall always admire their in-house approach when it comes to the artistry of games. I am happy to be transparent in just wanting to look at something pretty from the industry I work in.
Thanks for the article, and I look forward to not buying this for £70 due to having the ability and free-will to just purchase Loaded/ShopTo credit if so desiring.
@wildcat_kickz this why people really shouldn't care what people say on the Internet if it game u like buy it and enjoy it games are entertainment people who keep on hating on everything I'm games just really need to find a new hobby in life
@wildcat_kickz hate drives engagement. Online, Wolverine will likely be review bombed by the angry gamer more so than it’ll be praised by those who love it. Thats just the nature of people. The ones who love and enjoy something will usually just love and enjoy that thing. The ones who hate that thing will do everything in their power to draw others in their misery.
This is definitely more to do with misinformation and it being "cool" to hate on a game rather than the game having legitimate issues. The game isnt even out yet and weve seen such a small part of it.
I’ve been missing my Uncharted adventures and this looks to hit the spot. I need a game like this.
Well that's the confirmation for people who thinks the combat is just mashing one button over and over. Although, i personally don't mind a simple combat as long as the enemies are smart and have good variations.
@LiamCroft Can you confirmed if Wolverine have dodge and parry mechanic? Btw nice preview 👍
Another weird thing around this game is this idea that it's worthless if it's not a 10/10.
Are we not allowed an enjoyable action game anymore?
Appreciate both Sony and Insomniac have set a high bar over the years, but I'm just looking forward to slashing up some folk.
Great preview Liam, and a good way to address the nitpicking!
I’m really looking forward to it. It looks like brilliant fun. Roll on the 15th September!!!
Looks fine to me!
Is it going to play different to something similar or before it? Of course it is! Is it comparable to others? Yeah if you compare apples and oranges.
This game isn't even out yet and to be this negative is just plain old odd in my opinion. This doesn't have something to do with say.... the discless future right?
The internet is very negative at the moment in general. This goes for everything too but I digress.
I'll give this a chance like I would any game that peaks my attention.
If they throw in some battle arenas and other things to keep the gameplay fresh and continuous I don't see how this could be anything bad tbh.
Just my views anyway
@AhmadSumadi I agree with all of that except for it being "just the nature of people." It is now, but it wasn't always. We shouldn't just accept that we have a collective culture of moroseness. We should be more proactive in trying to reverse that decline. It's why I try to call out people in the comments when they're just being complainers for the sake of it.
Removed - trolling/baiting
@nessisonett Dissatisfaction from whom? The internet? Most major PlayStation 5 exclusives continue to sell just as well as ever, even without receiving such aggressive discounts (I remember finding God of War [2018] and Horizon Zero Dawn for $10 just a few months after launch). No one is "displeased" with PS5 exclusives except for the people who won't be able to play them—and I think that's great; the fewer jerks like that playing, the better.
@wildcat_kickz Unfortunately negativity sells which is why these people are so desperate to find ANYTHING to complain about it.
Since when did video games become so sacred that you aren't allowed to mock them? Those twitter videos you posted the other day were just people poking fun at the cinematic side of Sony games, not misinformation. Harmless fun. Basing your whole preview around it is weird imo.
As for the game, streamlined Spiderman I think sounds like an improvement. At worst this game will be a quick enjoyable action romp with lots of spectacle and such. Whether you remember the game long after is another question.
@PuppetMaster Yes, there are dedicated dodge and parry mechanics!
@SMJ I guarantee you it will be the best you'll find in the superhero game genre right now (wow, if Batman Arkham were released today it would be massacred because that combat hasn't aged well at all).
Excellent Preview! I was already sold on the game and I'm not even a big super hero guy! But it's nice to read something postive for once.
It’s simple you either like this sort of game or you don’t, buy or wait to buy or don’t.
It’s just personal taste at the end of the day.

@wildcat_kickz Thank you for saying this, and articulating my thoughts so well. There is a certain section of gamers who seem to only derive joy from being critical and negative on anything to do with the hobby - from hardware, to software, to the companies, to other gamers.
It's not clever, most people are tired of it and see straight through it now (or put repeat offenders onto ignore, as I do) and it achieves nothing except to spread misery amongst company.
This just isn't my style of game, but it looks amazing and I'm sure it'll be as good to play as the rest of Insomniac's catalogue.
Don't worry, the grifters will forget all about this game when Intergalactic gets another trailer
I think I've managed to avoid a lot of the online chat cos I've been avoiding spoilers but if anyone thinks Insomniac Games would make a simple "press forward, one button" game just doesn't play games!
They've been an all time classic developer that's made some of the most fun games I've played.

@LiamCroft Thanks for the preview snippets, Liam. Just wanted to also state, from reading your preview it's clear you are a fellow man from Derbyshire.
Your way of delivering facts like it's a lump hammer to a kneecap is exactly what is needed in this sea of misinformation and social media "hot takes".
Keep saying it how it is, directness in this article is appreciated from me at the very least.
@TheArt You can evade the Wolverine £70 price by buying physical. Argos £60, Smyths £63, etc.
Granted this strategy doesn't work beyond 2027 because of Sony ruthlessly killing off discs but while you still can, take full advantage of the benefits physical gaming provides.

Why does it sound like apology article?
Removed - flaming/arguing
Oh no a game got mild slander online, better start defending it. In all seriousness though I find this whole situation pathetic. Not just the slander but the reaction to it. I have seen people hit with much worse and shrugged it off, but this mild stuff is getting Insomniac to have a mental health check? When did Insomniac get this over sensitive about stupid online slander wars?
It looks fun, I don't see any issue there. I wasn't crazy about having to mash a button to stop a car on the first Spiderman game, but then I wasn't happy to see they'd removed it in Spiderman 2 either. The game was fun again once I stopped thinking about those minor differences and instead focused on the actual fun. I trust that Insomniac know what they are doing.
@SleepyNick Never seen anything like the criticism this game has received and I've been doing this a long time.
Removed - flaming/arguing; user is banned
For whatever unholy reason, social media algorithms seem to prioritize manchild meltdowns, gossip, and literal fake news. I’m almost 40 and can’t imagine throwing temper tantrums (online or IRL) about video games.
@Dalamar Don't see the apology at all. He even agreed with some of the criticisms — he was just able to provide context because he, y'know, actually played the game!!!
@TheArt so what wrong with linear game? Do you want to do the same 20 things over and over for 500 hours or would you rather have a 20 hours of a great quality.
I think Wolverine looks at the very least like a damn good time. Is it going to be revolutionary and unlike anything we have ever seen? Of course not. It never claimed it would be.
It's based off a comic-book character that has been around since the freaking 70s. If you were thinking this would be an unimaginable revolution in gaming or something...well...you are simply being unreasonable. Simple as that.
@LiamCroft Nice. Thanks for the confirmation! 🍻
@wildcat_kickz you’re correct. Certain public figures have made it less shameful to be callous and gross to people. It’s sad because the behavior has trickled down into almost every facet of human interaction.
The general feeling around Sony due to consistent blunders this generation is now causing anyone and anything to do with them be caught in the crossfire. Not my type of game but looks fine if you’re into marvel stuff, unfortunate for the devs to be catching strays.
@get2sammyb when some people go into a thing with a preconceived notion, they’re gonna read things a whole lot differently than those who went into that same thing from a point of neutrality. See it around here every day!
People are making money off of negative engagement, it's as simple as that.
@get2sammyb Sure, it has been happening more and more. Maybe that has something to do with monetized tweets, there has been far more slop tweets since that change. But this is still just poking fun, nothing more.
Who knows, maybe the original God of War game would have got the same treatment if Twitter was around back then. Wouldn't have stopped me from having a blast with God of War!
I’m not really a fan of the character Wolverine in general, and there’s simply too many other games I’m interested in coming out around the same time for me to pick this up immediately.
I remember when gamers weren’t so toxic and entitled and people judged games on their merits and didn’t wish for things to fail. Miss those days.
@get2sammyb oddly enough, no game is a 10/10! NONE! My favorite game of all time is The Witcher 3 and I don’t even give it a 10/10. Hell, I’ve been enjoying TF out of quite a few 7s and 8s as of late.
@Dalamar because you read it that way.🤷🏾♂️
From what I've seen (which isn't much I'll be honest, no twitter for me) the 'insults' towards this game have been massively overblown.
Not really worth this much defending. There's been much, much worse and unfair criticism of games and Devs in the past. The whole 'holding a stick forward is the whole game' joke isn't even sort of new, I'd barely call these short videos banter.
Ahh, the childhood memories of going to a kiosk to see if the newest X-MEN magazine was delivered fresh off the printer.
Running home and flying into the bed, lying flat on the belly and enjoying the cover before delving into the continuation of a entertaining story.
This game seems to be made for my nostalgia.
People really need to get their expectations in check. I know what the game is and I’m excited for it. I’m losing my mind over because I have normal expectations. The internet is just filled with people who like to complain and but never explain why.
Removed - flaming/arguing
@Jireland92 Do I think any of this nonsense is a big deal in the grand scheme of things? For Insomniac, us, Sony, the world at large, no.
However, when you compound what has been said and done, on top of weeks of relentless comments regarding disc-less futures for all as far as PlayStation is concerned, it gets a lot to contend with.
Studios like Insomniac actually do genuinely like to get a feel for what people are thinking, creating heat maps of what people want from them, how they see their game and so on.
So when you have social media managers reporting back that the world hates your game due to it being from a company that is not publishing your disc, oh and it looks basic like a mobile game, oh and that death threat last week, well now there's 20 more. It all just keeps compounding.
I only do social media here, but it's fair to say that the world at large seems to think social media is getting more and more negative by the day, and so companies on it trying to get a feel for things are finding it harder to do so.
From my knowledge of them, no one at Insomniac is going to be impacted by this on a personal level. However, like us all, they're adults and just sort of done with the relentless negativity that's being bounced around the world right now.
Being on socials and selling your product shouldn't mean people get to tear you a new hole every Tuesday because their mother didn't love them enough.
People who are that negative and wish to bring down something others love, that harms no one, should either live a solitary life, or get counseling.
But yes, Insomniac don't care as such, it's just they're likely done pretending to appease the worlds negative Nancy's ... aren't we all? Sure sounds like Liam is.
There's an entitlement to the world now, that used to be hidden before social media took off, and now everyone feels validated, seen, heard, and yet no one seems to stop and think if that's an algorithm to keep them engaged, not their opinion that's important.
So no, no big deal, agreed, but I just think studios are done with dealing with the same crap we all are done with. We are all used to companies pretending to either not acknowledge it, or be overly nice to it, now they are firing back.
I'm not saying this is how Insomniac or Sony are feeling, but I would say more than anything I'm just trying to word from their side how it may be seen all inclusive, not as a microcosm. Playing Devil's Advocate to speak.
@wildcat_kickz Seems to have said all this far better to be honest haha.
@TheArt Onimusha also a linear game and $70. Capcom confirmed it can be finished around 15-20 hours.
I think gamers needs to enjoy and appreciate linear games more before they reach the point where they feel playing a video game is the same as if they're doing an 9-5 hour job.
Sounds like a basic linear action game which I dont have a problem with at all. What's concerning is how long this game took to develop and how much it cost.
@get2sammyb
You're not reporting those who praise or look forward to the game. Maybe if we offered a spotlight on people who like what they see, you might experience everything differently.
Sure out of 2000 that post (if people even post positivity these days) some will poke fun at something. But, some of these people won't ever get to play it because they didn't go PlayStation. So maybe it could be a way to lessen the blow.
So most of the non hateful critiques of what they've seen thus far, that's been reframed as hate by the Sony aligned machina, is entirely reasonable based on the design choices and scope of the game.
Gotcha
I heard a lot of people was playing that Sentinel boss fight wrong Maximilian Dood said you suppose to parry the attacks he said the boss is defeated a lot quicker when you do that
Someone can correct me later, but most of the complaints were about character designs and possible story beats and tones.
Gameplay was fine for the most part, except some sequences that if made by other studios would have another kind of take, like instead of being interactive it would've been an over the top cutscene
@ButteredCrumpet Don't sell yourself short! 😂
The game looks fun, as for the story.. well insomniac may falter there depending on the writers. That is my main area of concern.
Even if the story is a bit naff, I will still have fun with the 12-15 hours of action gameplay and it will end up a 7/8 out of 10.
I think we have seen too much from Insomniac's formulaic ways to give this a 10/10 because it won't be pushing the medium forward in any meaningful way. Sadly Sony games are more risk adverse now and the writing quality isn't great. At least the games remain fun to play though.
@wildcat_kickz could not agree more with this sentiment.
don't care what others think the game looks good to me.
I’m not sure why you’re bothering with articles like this. Not one single person that has already made up their mind will read it let alone change their mind. Also people are allowed to dislike whatever they want and say whatever they like. It doesn’t mean you have to read it
It's times like these that make me feel happy that PushSquare is the closest thing I have to social media. Arguing with arguers over an argument that is as meritless as yelling at clouds.
This looks like a case of Insomniac picking the right game type etc for the character in question (just like they did with Spiderman), and applying their usual incredibly high production values.
The haters can raise their blood pressure to insane levels whilst others enjoy it - it wouldn't be a Sony 1st party game if that wasn't the case lol.
@wildcat_kickz Perfect comment. We really live in a sad and miserable internet era, where people can't and won't allow others to simply enjoy things. Luckily, I always make my own mind and go with my guts, but there are lots of manipulable people out there.
If we must make an effort to simply enjoy games, the problem isn't in the games.
Feminist writer to. Not sure though why its getting so much hate.
They are the new woke/anti-woke odd people.

Dunno, the game looks pretty cool to me. I am playing the FF7 remake and I just enjoy the pacing and how it's giving you the tale of Midgar, basically. Looking at Wolverine through a similar lens from one of the best devs in the industry and I'm pretty excited.
@freddquadros It's definitely the right attitude to just tune out the noise and like what you like. But you also don't need to be terribly manipulatable to get sucked into a black hole of negativity. It's pretty remarkable how contagious that mindset is. You don't even realize you've succumbed to it half the time. Maybe 15 years ago, I worked at a retail store and it became the culture to just complain about everything. I was part of it. It took someone to pull me aside and point out that all I did was whine as a way to commiserate with my colleagues. It really opened my eyes. I just wish more people would take a second to self reflect about what kind of message or attitude they're contributing to the world.
As I said on another thread, I saw the preview quotes from games media outlets for Watchdogs and Dragon Age Veilguard, to name two out of dozens of examples.
If I want a "fact check" I certainly don't go to gaming sites for one, as they are practically reading out identical press releases from the publisher/developer. "Return to form" being one example.
I will decide who has been doing the misinforming and myth-pushing when I see playthroughs from the likes of theRadBrad.
I almost always watch some post-launch gameplay before buying games. It saves me from being duped by both sides.
Whether it be a lot of nonsense from gamers who criticised AC Shadows unfairly, or the games media who can't be trusted on practically anything.
@Leinad7
Than ever? That’s quite a leap 😅
The article specifically noted that the emphasis is on action and that it gets to the point. And ‘much of the campaign is structured around action-packed missions all about combat’, but that’s only according to someone who played the game, so what do i know
My only beef with this game is when its coming out. It looks nice and plays fine but with all the other bangers coming out in September its hard to justify buying this over something like Blood Of Dawnwalker.
Thanks for the preview 👍 It's always good to get as much information out to people as possible.
@wildcat_kickz I understand. The allure is really strong. I always liked to be positive, it's something of my personality. But I understand how, with the climate of the world, people will turn to hate and cynicism. We must be different, uphold what we love, and don't mind so much what we don't.
It looks fun, just not $70 fun. Just like I did for Spiderman, I'll wait for a sale, and at that point it'll be patched maybe another mode added, more suits, the longer you can wait the better the experience it seems is the norm now.
A lot of people in this generation love snark and model their takes after "the bigger they are the harder they fall". Expect same treatment from GTA6, and people will blame their cat getting pregnant on some aspect they don't like about it.

@Grumblevolcano
Third party sellers will still be able to sell digital codes after 2027. So Sony might sell a game for $70, Amazon or Wallmart might still sell it for $60. There will still be competition, just no physical versions
It will be nothing less than great. Insomniac’s track record is rock solid. People need to check themselves. If something is bad or you don’t like it, that is one thing. But to mislead and run misinformation because of other issues you have which are totally unrelated, then find another damn hobby. If you are that upset and miserable, get the hell out. Life is too short to be that miserable, and a buffoon to boot.

My view is, there is a legitimate distrust of mainstream games journalism and people are turning to independent influencer types on YouTube, etc. more and more. This creates big opportunities for bad actors. There is an entire genre of "rage bait" channel on those platforms which are very superficial on real analysis. Granted there are some very good channels which blow any mainstream outlet out of the water in terms of quality, too.
Wolverine looks good, even great, from the gameplay video. Insomniac rarely miss at making fun, accessible games. That said, it's a stacked release schedule and I'm not in the giving-Sony-money mood much these days. Also, the cinematic action game formula - as cool as it is - has gotten a bit tired for me and I want a bit more depth in game mechanics than what Insomniac usually offers. So I'll buy this used down the road. After I play Onimusha!
But I can't deny it looks good. Just maybe not exactly for me. Thank you for the preview.
„You need only push forward to experience it.“
Yes, that’s what this guy in one of this videos showed.
Edit: It’s that video: https://x.com/diegosousabyte/status/2088233170843939098?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E2088233170843939098%7Ctwgr%5E76d4c7e9a096847591b41b7a894e42ebcbf33bf2%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.pushsquare.com%2Fnews%2F2026%2F08%2Fits-a-relentless-onslaught-wolverine-ps5-dev-responds-to-unprecedented-criticism
A straight-forward, linear action action game?! Unacceptable!
Now make it an open world with souls like, deck building, vampire survivors, and football team management and you will have me interested. And it better have a physical release. Not on BD, but on floppy disk.
All joking aside, I have no concerns over Wolverine or its gameplay. It's Insomniac, even at their worst, their games are still pretty great (not counting Fuze).
What exactly do people expect from this? Its a Wolverine game i just want great bloody combat and a decent story and this seems to be that.
@Psnfanboy79 If the game fails to tell to many experienced gamers how you could beat a boss, it’s the fault of the game.
@ItsAlwaysSunnyyy and you know no risks were taken how? They're getting away from their hallowed open world genre and that's a risk. You really need to think about this more friend.
@DennisReynolds they just want to cry online to feel important. I'll be playing this and enjoying it I treasure my award for a Sony game word up
@Max_the_German The article says that the preview throws you in a section thats further in the game where he has more abilities. So that’s probably why people don’t know how to use all of them yet
@LogicStrikesAgain yeah the article even SAYS this..
Pre-ordering beginning of Sep. You can't change my mind.
@LogicStrikesAgain That’s still bad design. Imagine that you could beat the Asylum Demon in Dark Souls with the broken knife, without getting killed as an inexperienced player. You wouldn’t learn anything.
But the game tells you that this is not the way to do it, that you are too weak, and that you should leave the arena to come back later with a much better weapon, attacking from a much better position.
@LogicStrikesAgain It's much less likely for retailers to discount digital products. I'd guess it's because digital products barely take any space up on shelves/warehouses, you can just have a code printed on a receipt or sent by email.
I'll be playing on day 1, this is one of the very few games I'm really looking forward to
@get2sammyb only issue is X men Origins Wolverine game.
Did a far better job at a sentinel battle than this lazy unoriginal boss battle in this wolverine game. Using a stale tried and
tasted concept of fighting 1 half way up its body. Its a legit criticism I think.
Also the regeneration of it fixing the suit aswel, as its been pointed out this has been fixed before hand with the batman games.
And the red mist section apparently only 1 chase in the game with that but surely that would be a feature,
Also I think people should watch MrMattyPlays video on these issues players have.
Im going to enjoy the game for what it is.
But I still can't not crisitice boring battles and mechanics which already had solutions made within other games.
Some reason, im getting ryse son of rome from this game(not a bad thing). Really pretty, gory, linear, and not much to it.
Maybe on sale? Looks fun but often I find that "cinematic experiences" play themselves.
About that Sentinel fight:
Now I haven't played the game myself, but I heard from someone who was invited to play the game that they were able to PARRY the boss and stagger it MUCH faster leading to a quick takedown. They even said they observed how other players were taking a long time fighting the boss without taking this strategy.
In fact the way they broke down the game was that the systems were rewarding aggressiveness and using it's universal parry to lead to more opportunities.
Got the info from Max, the guy who we had featured here for Tokon recently. Should be on their last stream around the 25:37 mark linked here. I don't even know if links are allowed here. Give me a heads up and I'll remove it.
https://www.youtube.com/live/yyl0N87ExWM?si=bUA93IThRq93RvJr&t=1537
Not sure if anyone has seen footage of someone landing it, but we'll see eventually either way. Makes complete sense to me though. How you approach a fight can change everything. If things feel a bit slow or strange, there's probably room to capitalize on it by throwing some ingenuity on your end and make sure an opportunity isn't missed. Everyone is just going to have to sharpen up.
For clarification, not with pitchforks online.
Everything I've seen of this game makes it look like Uncharted sans the charming cast to make up for the rudimentary gameplay.
Bad writers have infected every major Sony studio so idk what people are expecting in that department, but it won't be good. And that's going to bleed into the gameplay because the entire thing will be heavily scripted. It'll basically play itself for the most part.
Even among "movie games", this just looks plain unimpressive. Go play Asura's Wrath, it's not a great game, but it's 10x the superhero spectacle this game will be.
***** you don't even need to leave Sony's library for better options, just go play God of War
@Grumblevolcano That is a good point to be honest, sometimes physical stock does make a difference. But i still think retailers will try to compete on pricing to attract costumers
@Max_the_German I dont really get what you’re saying, but thats probably on me, i’m not that sharp right now. All i’m saying is, the preview version puts you in a further section of the game, where you miss the tutorial on how to use the special abilities that are unlocked. If anything, its the preview version that’s flawed
@_Nightsever_ He's a lot more positive and clear then most of the other previews. It mostly seems like the issue most critics have had is the preview content jumps chapters. So there's no fluidity.
After reading the bits in the article about the gameplay, it does feel like a game where if you've played any of Insomniac's Spidey outings, you know what to expect, which makes sense.
@LogicStrikesAgain Yup it's quite clear at this point that the preview being cut in segmented chunks has played a bigger role in the tepid but positive reception. I get that Insomniac probably had spoilers or something but it's a weird decision.
Please Sony, more linear games! I'm so done with every game needing to be open world, we can have both..
I truly believe that games like Wolverine are made to be first and foremost: fun, accessible and with a few twists in the story along the way. That's it. They're not made to be goty, they're not made to be for hardcore gamers, although they can enjoy it too. And I believe developers like Insomniac and naughty dog are very good at delivering these type of games. These games are not made for haters, they can enjoy a super difficult and inaccessible game somewhere else...
As a character, Wolverine strikes me as someone who doesn't want to stand around and talk, but move on to the fighting - perhaps not as quickly as Sabertooth, but he's not wanting to talk everything to death. So this works.
I don't have the open world fatigue some people seem to (at least I don't think I do), but there have been several great games lately that were less open world than they may have seemed - God of War, for example. Linear storytelling/gameplay is only a problem if it's done poorly (same with open world).
Personally, I'm not too excited or upset just yet - I'll wait for the game to drop, some reviews based on the whole thing to come out, and at least the first sale to hit, before I pick it up. But I will pick it up (on disk, if practical).
With so many games coming out, I'm not going have much time to spend on previews. I'll wait and eventually make up my own mind. I rather enjoyed what I played of Spider-Man, and I feel this developer has a good track record.
And also, I'm not sure gaming sites need to be defending a multibillion-dollar corporation. Let the game speak for itself when it's actually released.

Somehow a major area of contention was overlooked, as many complaints are also about the BlackRock-approved scripts and/or story elements that have to be shoehorned into practically every 1st party Sony game
@darkhairwarrior
That last statement rings true. I think the biggest pushback is due to the fact that the camp of toxic positivity is very manufactured and disingenuous about what they present us, ultimately either resorting to gas-lighting or ad hominem attacks when they get called-out.
If they were forthcoming about their product (or intentions) they still may be ridiculed and lose sales but at least ongoing jaded, resentment would be less prominent
@FxTANK EDIT: I just realized I horribly misread part of the comment. My bad
I agree, and they probably know that kind of transparent would lead to less sales. There's probably a considered reason we never saw the graffiti mission leading up to SM2's release. I hope Insomniac are not implementing things they can already guess will cause more discourse
@darkhairwarrior
I dont think the article actually says that any of what you mentioned is misinformation.
Who says you’re not allowed to express your opinion?
And what does Sony going discless in 2028 have to do with people liking this game?
So if people like a game its now considered toxic positivity? But you calling this “AAA slopfest” isnt toxic?
Also, are you suggesting the negativity surrounding this game is because people are angry with Sony? And is that perhaps also the reason why you hate this game?
@LogicStrikesAgain What a completely bad faith response. I wont respond to the things you claim I said if I did not explicitly state them. Please do not put words in my mouth!
"Despite the fact such pre-release verdicts were generally very positive, inaccurate videos have spread claims about the next PS5 exclusive that simply aren't true." is stated in the literal first paragraph of the article. It is an incredibly disingenuous statement.
Wolverine is a Sony game. Insomniac is a Sony company. PlayStation is a Sony ecosystem. It is perfectly reasonable to aim criticisms toward Sony through Sony products.
Even if that wasn't true, correlation is not causation. People can both be upset with Sony, and not like the game they reveal. It doesn't make their criticisms any less valid.
There is nothing toxic about me calling AAA slop what it is. I am not insulting anyone by expressing my opinion.
@darkhairwarrior
You’re talking about thing like SBI involvement not being misinformation. I’m saying the article never said that it was.
I agree, i never made any claims against that.
You seemed to be suggesting here that the negativity surrounding the game is because of people being angry with Sony, rather than due to algorithms as the site was implying. Thats why i asked you about it. Not putting words in your mouth, just asking you to clarify the inplication of what you wrote
That’s you opinion, and you’re entitled to it. But if you regard positive reactions to these games as toxic positivity, shouldnt you consider such pejorivate language as toxic negativity?
This level of backlash reminds me of Starfield.
Also the 6 QTE's in 2.5hrs is worrying me. Plus the writer finding it ok every 25-30 minutes to me kinda justifies some of the backlash. As hopefully it's meaningful & not just added to prolong the story.
@cragis0001 6 QTE in the span of 2.5 hours sounds okay to me. Last week i finished Metal Gear Rising and there was plenty of QTE in the cutscenes, QTE for every Zandatsu, and QTE in every boss fights.
But i'm not sure why people hate QTE. I didn't hear any backlash back when og RE 4 and Shenmue popularized QTE. Then more games used QTE like God of War, Quantic Dreams games, Telltale games, Yakuza, Bayonetta, MGS etc etc. And now Wolverine have 6 QTE in the span of 2.5 hours and suddenly it deserves a backlash?

@skyshot
Pushsquare makes money from your pathetic interest in the game.
Most people do not engage with the negativity, and most people are going to enjoy what seems to be an expertly crafted adventure. Keep on losing with your sad memes. Only other losers will care.
Like I have said before - there's a before and after the launch of GTA VI. The amount of FOMO the PC players that produces cope memes will experience is going to be off the charts.
Having been on holiday I feel I missed all the aggro around this. But it does highlight how toxic a lot of discourse has become. Perhaps we are better off just discussing games less and playing them more. Not that this would help the good folk here at Push Square and elsewhere I frequent.
Either way @LiamCroft this was a solid write up. Looking forward to playing this eventually, but I am slow and behind and the next few months are stacked!
Shouldn't have involved Sweet Baby Inc, it's pretty much guaranteed to not be a big success
Ideal im glad I pre-ordered this and will play the hell out of it Bub
I am one of the ones that is not interested in GTA6 so this is a nice alternative for me
It's just, nothing from what they showed look that impressive. Not saying it will be a bad game and i am sure it will sell 10 million copies - Wolverine character is pretty damn popular.
Playstation first party games are suffering because you can start to notice they are all the same over the shoulder sandbox with similar fighting reskinned figures, the occasional QTE and endless dialogue and cutscenes.
Pizza is fine, but not for every meal. The one highlight recently is Astrobot because it was different. I'm sure in a vacuum Wolverine is great, but we've seen it before.
Was all over this until one of the early commenters reminded me it will be £70.
Wolverine looks like and will probably be a blast to play. Much like a popcorn flick at the cinema there is no need to overthink it. Insomniac games have nearly always been pretty decent. I imagine it will sell just fine between release and Xmas.
@Skippermonkey should be discounted in a year's time, just like Spider-Man was.
Maybe just accept the fact some people don't like the game honestly the mental gymnastics going on here is shocking!
It will all be out in the open when it releases!
Every Single one of you who have spammed every single comment section, crying about disc's have helped create this space where good Sony games are getting shat on.
I hope you are happy with yourselves.

@Korgon i disagree. batman is older than wolverine and arkham knight was a freaking banger, arguably revolutionary for the hero genre just like asylum/city.
@MrGawain exactly. it looks like wolverine could be DLC to spiderman 2, haha.
Removed - flaming/arguing
The only complaining ive seen online is sweet baby inc involvement
Removed - unconstructive feedback
@TheArt all of those games are also $70….onimusha is also a linear game. Same with RE Requiem and 007 this year as well
People saying it's spiderman but with Wolverine paint seems quite unfair from what I can tell.
For a start it's linear, not open world which gives it a massive differentiator on its own. I'm actually glad they took this route as open world fatigue is real for me.
Just like with everything online nowadays think the criticisms of Wolverine are missing the forest for the trees on what are more legitimate issues with the “Sony Style Game”. Wolverine looks great and will probably deliver, but I do think just like this entire Gen for the most part Sony is definitely over reliant on this style of game as their true heavy hitters. This is not to say they don’t have wider genres of games. Obviously Tokon and Saros just came out this year but they are the exception to the norm and especially with Saros it was a side game and not treated as a high profile game. Also think the heavy push into Live Service games took away funding that could have been used to fund a wider range of 2nd party titles in more unique genres. Sony doesn’t have any single player fps or first person games in general. Sony does not have any good rpg team of any kind in its ranks.

@nomither6
I love the Batman games as much as anyone but I wouldn't call them revolutionary in any way. The Arkham games are among my favorite games of all time but not something I had never seen before...and that's completely okay.
Plus Batman just lends himself to a video game much better with all the gadgets and whatnot. Wolverine has claws and can heal himself, not much they can really do with that outside of a classic hack and slash type of game so again I don't know what people were expecting.
@Grumblevolcano If you are buying your PSN credit at a full price, more fool you. Its easy to get about 15% off PSN credit with a little Google search. It takes me about 4 minutes to buy the code and enter it into the store for my credit.
Of course you don't mention it because it doesn't suit your narrative, does it?
Actually, discounts vary by the day and today the largest discount I found was 14.15%, but the point remains - it makes this game £60.09 on the store today.
Despite the fact that my September "dance card" is probably going to be filled by Beast Of Reincarnation and Brigandine Abyss, the fact that this game is a kinda "throwback" more in line with an old-school GoW game or the Transformers "[fill in the blank ] of Cybvertron" or something is actually ENCOURAGING.
Video games are almost afraid to BE VIDEO GAMES at this point. Not every game needs an atlas and spreadsheets for character builds, aight? Sometimes I still slap Ninja Gaiden or Contra or Shatterhand in my NES 'cause I just wanna explode some naughty pixel villains.
Let's try to remember what "fun" means.
@Korgon i’m curious to know what was it before the arkham games that you’ve seen then? Spider-man 2 the movie game? Assassins creed?
@nomither6
Many influences. It was an action adventure game so there are plenty that came before it. The combat for example, while I definitely would say Arkham perfected it, reminded me a lot of how Heavenly Sword's combat worked with the whole different counters for different attacks. Stealth was influenced by a bit of AC and a bit of Splinter Cell here and there.
I think I remember reading an interview at some point where the director said Metroid Prime was a big influence for the level design.
Wolverine: The Push Square Apology
@wildcat_kickz 100% This. Every single comment section is just people complaining.
I personally think its a symptom of Youtubers creating rage to increase their earnings, which trickles down to people that watch them believing that whichever game is the current thing, is actually the worst game ever because it has a women in it, the frame rate dropped below 60 a few times, or that it is only 18 hours long.
Growing up with games like Battletoads, Altered beast etc... people moaning about Halo or Wolverine must be under the age of 20. I would say that about 80% of non indie games that are released in this day and age are good at the very least. Most are great
@Toot1st And It's a pretty valid criticism, too! I'm very wary of the story of this game. Take that and add it to how, 'same-y' all of it looks combat-wise compared to what we've had before from 1st party releases and it's easy to see why it's not all trolling and hate for hate's sake
@Max_the_German
Pretty sure that was the joke.
It's the standard reception to a new game. Happens all the time. I'm surprised it isn't under pressure to be delayed.
I think the video of just pushing forward on the joystick during an entire sequence tells me all I need to know about this game. Wait for a sale and buy it used.
I do want to get this game but it seem sold out on amazon may have to look around because I'm not paying that much for a download game
But the game does look good
Oh no, Sony games getting criticized and made fun of???
Sony fans do the same with Xbox games, so it goes both ways, right? Grow a thicker skin. It's just video games. Nothing worth to get upset about.
I'll wait, and pick up a used copy, or a deep sale, as it's one of those games, I likely only play once.
Personally, I'm much more excited for Onimusha, Phantom Blade Zero and Silent Hill Townfall, which is more up my alley.
So many fun games coming out, this fall.
Linear and mission-based? I was going to get it and now I am definitely not.
@PuppetMaster if QTE's are implemented well then I don't find them as a problem. But I've played many games where they feel added into the game just for the sake of dragging scenes out or feel repetitive if it's just an attack mechanic. As if it's the later you can have several in such a short period if over run.
The truth about Wolverine for me is that it just didn't wow me. But it's Insomniac so I'm not ruling it out entirely. But I'd rather have a new Ratchet & Clank, or a continuation of the reboot they started. Or a reboot / revival of Resistance.
