PlayStation has announced it's updating its line of PS5 Pulse headsets with two new models providing improved sound, comfort, and noise-rejection features for chat that filter out background noise.
There will be two new models on offer supporting PS5 consoles and other devices: the Pulse Wireless Headset and the Pulse Edge Wireless Headset.
The former will be out by the end of this year while the latter is slated to come out in early 2027. Release dates, pricing, and pre-order plans will be shared soon, Sony stated in its PlayStation Blog post.
These two new PS5 headsets are said to sport "superior sound quality", and "custom studio-inspired planar magnetic drivers" are at the heart of that promise. They're apparently better designed to help players pinpoint those quiet but important sound cues, like enemy footsteps. "Larger planar drivers have been added to PlayStation Pulse and Pulse Edge headsets, creating fuller, deeper bass, while keeping the clean sounds players have enjoyed from Pulse Elite."
The other side to these headsets is the chat functionality, and the new models now feature "AI-enhanced noise rejection in their integrated mics to filter out background noises. Both headsets also feature an updated form factor designed for lasting comfort and durability, with rotating earcups that allow the headsets to lay flat for easier portability."
If you're looking to separate the two headsets, then it does sound like the Pulse Edge headset is the better of the two. It's got additional features like "planar magnetic drivers" that offer deeper and better bass sounds while retaining the more subtle sounds.
The Pulse Edge headset also has "active noise cancellation" and a detachable boom mic, making it a better overall product compared to the standard PS5 Pulse headset. You also get a carrying case included with your purchase.
Will you upgrade to either one of these new PS5 headsets? Let us know in the comments below.

How many accessories will they drop? This is the 4th pair of headphones this gen right?
Also, no mention what so ever on its Frequency range. Really the most important thing to inform someone about, and it's not listed on their site anywhere.
They are nice in their design but honestly I'd recommend the Steel series arctis/nova headphones all day long. All these Pulse headphones are too pricey for the audio quality (I've owned a few). Choosing a Steel Series pair in a similar price range would be a much more satisfying experience - trust! They are also far more comfy for extended gaming sessions.
The Edge version may be more decent in sound quality than the rest but I imagine they'll be priced similar to the Steel Series Nova Pro, which will no doubt be the better deal of the two, going by previous performance of the Pulse headsets.
They look nice and I like the detachable microphone. But I already have 3 Sony headsets that I barely use. Sony's Platinum headset (PS4) is still my favorite. So lightweight and comfortable to wear for extended gaming sessions and pretty good sound quality.
I mostly use wired Beats earbuds instead whenever I do decide to use headphones.
I'm more interested in the Elevate speakers that release in November, but I'll wait for reviews before I make a decision to buy or not.
I'm skipping those, the last set were so uncomfortable and didn't fit properly at all. Other people told me that they had a good experience with the same set, I think Sony do know how to make good peripherals and the white ones are nice to look at. I just have too much hair and I think they test them on people who don't.
Fruits of Sony's purchase of Audeze, I see!
I'm happy enough with my current headsets, but I'd be interested to see the price on these too. They look pretty light.
Is it reasonable to assume we would own them, or is there some sort of legal clause in the fine print detailing how they’re only temporary rentals?
Im never buying another one of Sony's Playstation headsets again after the garbage plastic materials they use for the last two sets.
Hopefully they actually have good build quailty unlike there previous headsets that are notorius for cracking very easily.
Jesus they just don't quit with the overpriced accessory shilling
Made far too many mistakes buying PS headphones over the years. The quality control is absolutely shocking. The amount of times the headset snapped was crazy. I got 3 replacements of one pair.
@GirlVersusGame mine broke cuz my head is big lmao the white plastic snapped after a few months and I was barely extended them to take off my head 😅
@11001100110zero I think we'll more than likely hear something about the specs closer to release
@Theamazing1 that's why I returned my Pulse Elite before I even gave them the chance to crack. These at least look to be more durable at the stress points tho
@Drago201 That's pretty funny, I don't know why they can't just use an extendable/retractable headband. I had two pairs of the black PS4 ones break. The first snapped randomly on my head. The second broke on the folding hinges. There was nothing else holding them together so they hung from the wires like a wind chime. The white ones went back to the land of peripherals.
I keep a lot of things boxed. That headset went right back in there, I'm sure my PS4 ones are around somewhere. That long black thing is a Move Controller, I just noticed it looks a little odd if you've never seen one before. Especially very late at night. I better go to bed.
Isn’t this the third headset they are releasing this generation?
@ReignMan_27 Probably. I don't expect them to be great tbh. They'll cover the standard 20-20hz, and go lower a wee lower thanks to the planars in them. The battery life won't be great. Planers tend to require a lot of juice, most of them require dedicated amps, and adding massive magnets in the set, add a bunch of weight.
Cheapest I can find are the HiFiman ones, for $230, and that's the dinky Chinese brand.
@GirlVersusGame yeah mine snapped right above the little connector for the plastic and rubber headband part I would've been more mad but instead of paying the $150 I got them at $110 off so I wasn't as mad but still for that price it should've been built better I went back to earphones after that lol
@ReignMan_27 i would be tempted by them if its made of metal which i dont know why they didnt do that in the past but yeah these do look better.
More brittle plastic garbage nobody asked for. Sony's annoying us with their take on apple's over-hyped branding.
Cool. I have Pulse Elite, I think. If they stop working, I'd look at Sony and Steel Series' different models.
would like them to focus on improving dualsense built-in mic, I read in v6 revision they removed the rear mic that's for the noise cancelation, but I'm still on ps4 and bugged with the dualshock not having one, can't stand using a mic and prefer it built inside the controller
I think I prefered the PS4 headset.
Not that the pulse is bad but I wasn't "mindblown" by a difference in quality and the way the PS4 one folded was a nice addition when you travel with your laptop, so was the little black pouch to put it all in ^^
I own the pulse 3d and the the elite, the elite has some connection issues so went back to 3d, now my premium ones just sit in the box. Il pass on these lol
I have the pulse 3d headset and I'm pretty happy with the sound but the battery hardly holds its charge so I'm looking at the steel series artic nova Pro set. My mate bought them and he says the sound quality is far better than my pulse ones and the battery's last for ages. I'll skip the Sony ones I think.
I'll probably compare it to the upcoming Beyerdynamic MMX 130 Wireless.
One attractive by being planar, one by open back. Maybe I'll then take more money into hand and look for one that offers both (but they mostly aren't wireless...).
I just buy the same cheap £20 Sony headphones every few years after wear and tear.
Now with even thinner breakable parts!
The first pair of Pulse headsets were an affordable entry point into Planar Magnetic headphones for audiophiles on a budget(sic). The sound they produced was actually really great but the construction, the fit, the wearability for extended periods of time all of it left a lot to be desired.
Just a massive rattly, plasticy mess. These new iterations at least look like a massive improvement.
More PHYSICAL products? The original version of these were terrible, were sold on within a week, but how many pairs of headphones are they trying to flog this gen.
I can't remember any sony headset to worth it's money. I'm huge fan of beyerdynamic and sennheiser audio products.
The endless Sony grift continues.
The last ones were rubbish. Prone to disconnect and not a good fit. Bought Arctis pro and never looked back
@Northern_munkey Steel Series batteries are next level. I honestly don't know what form of wizardry they practise to make them last so much longer than other brands. I went with a standard Nova rather than the pro and they are good, fit nicely and a pretty light so you don't get any discomfort after long sessions.
ahhh, come on. The Pulse will lack the Built-in Game Audio and Chat Balance Control for PS5. This we have on the current Pulse so... ***** move Sony.
Sony would like us to hear but they won't listen
Very confusing. I’m assuming the Edge is an upgrade on my Elites, but will await reviews.
I can obviously sell the old to fund the new, so I’m only considering the delta between those sums against the level of upgrade offered.
@ilyn yeah I have some old Arctis 7x on my PC.
Battery life is excellent and they are more comfortable than my Pulse Elite.
It’s hard to compare the sound. They have a different profile but that can be personal preference.
The uncomfortable Sony pad design can impact sound quality by not forming a good seal, especially when wearing glasses.
I prefer a fabric type pad over the rubbery faux leather type material.
Never again. All my PlayStation headphones' headbands broke. The SteelSeries Arctis Nova 7X is better in every way.
I’m too happy with my Inzone Buds, no regular headset for me
@11001100110zero If they are using drivers from Audeze (and they obviously do, because they own the company), then the frequency range is 20-50k. The range is never the problem with planar magnetic drivers; it's the sound profile that might not be to everyone's taste.
And spotty connection with Sony's link adapter.
@11001100110zero As for battery life I'm not sure about the numbers, but Pulse Elite outlives several controller charging cycles. Not sure how many. For reference, I have Audeze Maxwell that are rated for 80 hours of wireless operation. And this is the real number, I charge them extremely rarely.
@Krlozgod
Yes.
They all suck though so its not like people are missing something.
Nice. They totally look like they’ll last longer than my last two pair…
I always need to wait and see how comfortable they are with glasses on. The original pulse was a great headset but my ears felt like they were getting into two. But I guess that’s the drawback up having to wear glasses.
A lot of hate in here as usual, but i’ve had both the normal and Elite of the now “last-gen” headset and thought they were brilliant.
I’ll stick with my current Elite for now, but may grab the new Edge around the time of PS6.
@Jacko11 I think the same. Since release i have the pulse 3d and they are great. Only the earpads i have changed and i use them not only for the PS. Not sure what people do to headphones in oreder to break them.
@Sergo I think people break them by taking them off one-handed. Gotta use two hands people, like with a fine hat…
How do these releases compare to the Pulse Elite? Don’t those have planar magnet drivers? Where are the audiophiles in the chat? @SEVENTEENSOILS, do you know??
The thin headband, lined on the inside with soft imitation leather, doesn’t look very reliable. They would have been better off using the design from the Sony Inzone H9 II headset.

I’ve got the original PS5 headset that launched with the console. It’s plasticky, the headphone cushions outer material has crumbled off - but the sound is good. I love the look of those Pulse Edge headphones and they’ve got active noise cancellation for outdoor use and advertised as being more resilient, so if the price is right, I will consider them.
I'll stick with my usb jack into my mixing desk, using a pro overhead mic, with the party audio coming out of the speakers, and proper Atmos surround. I'd rather not lose my hearing with audio blasted directly into my ears all the time.
Actually pumped for this. I loved the original pulse and pulse elite but the elite broke in the exact same spot after 2 years so will wait it out for these. Sound quality is great for the price so hoping these wont be crazy expensive.
Sony intentionally make their hinges skinny so the headphones break easily
The ear covers all end up cracking and pealing.
@ilyn I pulled the trigger on a pair of steel series artic nova pro's..white to match my ps5 Pro and psvr2..£151 new of ebay.
I got Arctic 7 but doesn't support PS Link so can't use them on my PS Portal. This does though but I think it won't be cheap
