Physical Disc Fans Must Wait to Play Control Resonant on PS5

They did this with Alan Wake 2, so I'm not surprised by this news

Regarding physical getting delayed? probably due to inexperience since it is usually handled by publishers but I think Remedy are self Publishing this. Either way getting that digital deluxe with 48 hours early access.

They just want as many people as possible to buy the non resaleable copy. Not really a surprise, it means everyone buys from them rather than secondhand, and they can keep the price higher for longer.

I just canceled my preorder of physical edition and won’t buy it. I don’t want to support those studios that sneakforce digital games

I can wait 3 weeks. Especially since a Phantom Blade 0 physical hasnt been announced so October is free for me lol

@Danloaded I'm with you on this. At least we know it's coming. Waiting a couple of weeks on a month that has 1001 releases is no biggie, in fact it is welcomed.

I have full confidence it’ll be well worth the wait. Control was fantastic, and Alan Wake is one of my all time favorite games (and the reason I even bothered to get a 360). Remedy has a fairly strong track record (not counting that abysmal live service slop they sent out to die), and I expect Resonant will be a great game.

It's gonna be a busy fall anyway, and I'm used to waiting for physical games.

From all the blockbusters that I am interested releasing on September this was at the bottom of my list, specifically since I haven’t finished the first game, and ai was going to skip the launch, but since I already paid in advance for my copy of Fire Emblem and Onimusha I was going to get this at launch. I can wait 3 more weeks but now it will launch on October which for me has more titles that I am interested in than September but fortunately most of them aren’t AAA or only DLC/Expansions.

Well at least they confirmed it'll have physical disc. Still waiting for PS5 disc for Onimusha 2, Kunitsu-Gami, Ghost n' Goblins Ressurection, and Romeo is a Dead Man.

As a longtime digital only buyer. I feel bad the way the physical collectors are bring treated. I mean their money is green and folds just like mine. Happy it’s coming out on disc for people to buy but man that is a long wait. I am not even sure it’s very safe to buy physical until Sony say’s the PS6 will have a disc drive separate for BC with PS4-PS5 games. If they don’t do that, ya’ll are going to riot.

Is that all the larger remedy is? Or is there a ton of contractors not pictured lol.

i'm okay with the delay gives me some time to finish up all the september games before this comes out.

@Oram77 The Alan Wake 2 release was a totally different situation. The physical edition was released a full year after the digital release, and Remedy originally stated that they had no plans for a physical edition when the game was first released. They only later changed their decision. A delay of 3 weeks for Control Resonance isn’t the same thing.

Gotta wonder...Have the disc production lines already slowed enough to impact an expected supply enough to require additional time to source enough stock?

Or, on the other hand...maybe the GTA6 production lines secured so much plastic for the box component of its inexplicable code-in-box release that it's impacting SKUs of games that actually have discs that could better use said plastic? Massive waste of plastic, if you ask me--one reason I hate code-in-box approaches, and to think Sony's at least sounding like they're encouraging that type of SKU going forward (they don't allow selling standalone digital codes, distributed through means of e-mail and gift cards, unlike Nintendo and Microsoft; and even though Sony's sounding like they're sending one message, in actuality I expect them to actually dial even code-in-box releases back via discouragement of the types of products that typically get those kind of releases once we get into 2028 and beyond)...

Digital copy will be bought then! Hyped.

Currently, physical copies look like they don't get the digital content. Hopefully, this delay canchange that.

@shiningpikablu252 Doubt it because None of the other devs releasing in September seem to have this issue. As I said earlier. It's the first time Remedy are self-publishing in a while. Probably ran into some logistical or technical issue.

I was undecided which version to get, but this has tipped me over to get the digital version. I've booked a week off work just after it releases and can't rearrange it at this stage.

I can wait. I’m trying to get through as much of the KH series and Xenoblade Chronicles as I can in time to play through Blood of the Dawnwalker in 2 weeks all while juggling every day life. I enjoy these first world problems

AW2 wasn't. they released physical just after game bombed digitally.

Id say the reason for the delay is physical isn't important anymore and new releases won't be happening physically anymore very soon it's time to start accepting it maybe start up your digital collection now?

Delays happens, even in pressing factories, especially when the bigger studios, are the first served. And maybe they found a bug, that they wanted to fix for the disc release?

It’s almost like these things are planned out to force people done a certain path.

I pre-ordered the steelbook edition so this sucks for me - but I'll wait, because the steelbook is cool (and while this is likely my most anticipated game for the rest of the year, I'm not getting it twice)

I pre-ordered this and Silent Hill Townfall which both were to release physically on the same day so this works perfectly for me. Now I just need to juggle games in October such as Hellraiser Revival

@Boxmonkey not really. There is a very simple answer to all of this.

And its to do with money and how its structured and push square should know this.

Basically when you release a game to put it on disc it costs quite alot of money upfront, due to the rating system or something along those lines.

But strangely if you wait a period of time after release, that cost comes down dramatically.

I believe Colin from sacred symbols explained this in detail about his own games. That its cheaper and cost effective to release the game on digital first and then release physical later, after a certain amount of time.

I think it came down to it has to be out for a period of time and then you can just print what you like. Basically

Can’t believe Sony paid Remedy twenty million dollars to delay the physical edition. For Alan Wake 2 I mean, and that was in 2023. I’m guessing for Control Resonant they paid hundred million dollars and gave Sam Lake a nice coffee grinder to delay the release.

Conspiracy theories aside, I was already planning on going digital. Good chance that I’ll double dip if I like it, just to support Remedy (and to get the cool looking steel book).

I can't tell what the target of your sarcasm is. I mean, given manufacture and distribution time you may not even get the day 1 patched version on the disc.

If you are referring to being able to download a digital patch for the disc, 3 weeks after launch, then you always have this option - just don't put any disc in your console until 3 weeks after launch!

I've always genuinely found it curious that if preservation is the main goal of discs / collectors, why they don't release around 6 months after the digital launch - when the game is fully patched (might be a bit longer for certain dev teams).

@Rich33 That has happened on occasions (not super often, but it happens). Spyro Reignited Trilogy released with only the first game on the disc, but later reprints got the entire package on the disc.

Guess that means more digital sales and then Sony can announce how poorly the physical copy have sold.

I’ll definitely be getting a physical copy of CONTROL Resonant, but with MARVEL’s Wolverine out just before it and COD MW4 out roughly a month later, it’s likely gonna be November until I pick it up.

@Fake-news I doubt that's the case. The more likely explanation is that there's some sort of issue with production, such as transport delays, less stock than expected, some sort of really boring reason.

@Inkdude0 thats very short minded, no one is sneak forcing anything. Remedy is a studio that consistently struggles with money. this is probably some delay in logistics, not a fantasy land all discs must die conspiracy.
(even tho I trully believe no single major publisher actually wants to deal with physical anymore)

All I was referring to was that as the disc version releases later, chances are that by the time the disc comes out, the game will already be on patch 1.01 or 1.02 by then and all the killer bugs will be fixed.

Now you mention it, I think I remember something like that - but I couldn't remember the collection.
Its probably a bit academic now, but it does link in with a conversation we briefly had a few days ago about the 'quality' of the version on the disc.

@Rich33 Yeah, the problem with physical releases is that mannuals aren't needed anymore, and are a bit of a waste of paper, so why print them.

A bunch of extra goodies are usually reserved for collectors editions, so not the base version that most buyers get, and guides don't need to be printed for RPGs anymore, because the internet exists.

There are some nice physical releases though which come out with a poster. Very rarely from AAA games though. I think Metroid Dread was the only one that did.

It isnt. simple as that, the whole preservation movement is useless if you dont have the game files ripped and stored digitally anyway so the preservation argument for physical games is entirely moot.

@ShadowRJ love my physical games, specially when it comes with goodies like maps and booklets, since that's not the norm nowadays they dont appeal to me as much anymore.

@LordOfTurnips As a collector, I think a lot of us use "preservation" to make them sound more on the side of justice. I think most of us can admit that we just like owning stuff.

The actual preservation of games is done mostly by the community via creating and storring ROMs of the game. Nintendo are the only game company with a great track record of preserving their stuff.

Its probably getting slightly off topic, but 2 of the last games I bought physical editions of were Witcher 3 which came with a poster sized map (and some other random stuff IIRC) and Infamous 2nd Son which came with a Beanie - though that may have been a Game pre order exclusive.

On the manuals front - that is something I very much prefer them putting in game like they do now, because some of them were not exactly helpful (usually because they were too short).

Welp that sucks.. was going to preorder Friday for my birthday but considering all of the other games in September and GTA coming out November I’ll probably just wait for a sale next year.. it is what it is

I'm in the UK - England to be specific. I seem to think it was a Game exclusive for Pre-orders (and maybe limited even then), but I might be remembering that wrong!

I'm happy to wait for the physical copy. There's always too many games to play. This Sept is maybe the biggest monthly schedule ever as far as top tier releases.

@Valkian24 It wasn't due to Epic's publishing rights. Remedy knew that most players were already primarily digital (their words, not mine https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Wake_2#Release), so they initially released digital only on console to mitigate costs.

Even if that was their argument, I wouldn't be surprised if there was some concern about AW2's sales figures at Remedy pre-launch, given that it was a sequel to a 10+ year old game and previously Control had a slow sales ramp.
