More Classic Lord of the Rings Games Are Coming Back, Dev Confirms

So the question is…how many of these games will actually be worth playing? Any gems I’ve missed that I should keep an eye out for?

Never played any of the old Lord of the Rings games, but hopefully this will be a sign of future well loved licensed games being preserved for modern audiences.

I for one would be estatic if Spider-Man 200 and Nightfire somewhoe got the rights sorted.

Many of the old LOTR games are all time classics! This is a LOTRenaissance right here.

Wish I could play Battle for Middle Earth again, but alas...

I played the start of the new War in the North remaster and I'm quite impressed. Not necessarily by the combat or anything, but to how true to Lord of the Rings it is, both the books and the movies. I love seeing places not seen in the films, like the ruins of Fornost. Looking forward to more of these and Can't wait for the Warhorse game

Well, it's not exactly a good time to be a Middle-Earth fan at all I'd say.

The Hobbit trilogy was a disappointement(unless you go and watch the M4 edit), the last "adaptation" we got was the terrible show Rings of Power, and we have an upcoming disaster with the Hunt for Gollum. Let's hope the team at Warhorse Studio can manage something good but I'll hold my breath until I see something worth being excited.

If they're able to tackle the EA games like The Two Towers, Return of the King and The Third Age then that gives me hope that maybe someday the 007 games may come to current platforms. While it was amazing that NSO and Rare Replay got N64 Goldeneye, I prefer Nighfire and Everything or Nothing.

I don't know how licensing can bring The Two Towers and Return of the King back. The Third Age, Conquest and Battle For Middle Earth games seem far more likely.

@dskatter the Two Towers and Return of the King games were very popular and had local co-op that I think a lot of millenials played as kids.

I have nostalgia for them for sure. I think the rest of them are a mixed bag

@naruball You can still play Battle for Middle Earth if you have the disc. I was playing 1 and 2 a couple of weekends ago. You can't buy them new any more but if you don't have the discs, they can be had on ebay and CEX

@Shepherd_Tallon Sure you can! There's mods and you can just adjust the .ini. The HD texture pack is pretty good too

@naruball .....if you have a PC then download the 'BFME All in One Installer' and you can download and play both games and the Rise Of the Witch King expansion....all free !
Literally takes 2 minutes to do, the games run great

@LiamCroft Would love to play The Two Towers again. I remember the Helm's Deep section too! Game came out during my college years and it got played more than I should have when I had papers due.

Id love a chance to play some of the LOTR PS2 games with trophies. I fondly remember playing the crap out of The Two Towers.

Aspyr is a name that makes me shudder... Their star wars ports were rough.

I'd love a Conquest re-release. Basically a LOTR version of Star wars battlefront if you've never heard of it.
Two Towers and Return of the King would be great too.
I might have to fetch the OG Xbox down from the store room, I still have the discs somewhere.

Just give us Conquest, Third Age, Two Towers and TRotK and i'm happy.

The best games, gameplay wise, are Shadow Of Mordor and Shadow Of War.
I loved both games and got platinum in both

I don't think any of these games have anything to gain from a rerelease. They were all solidly "meh"-tier even back then, and the graphical bells and whistles that can distract from subpar gamedesign with modern titles is truly lacking in most games from the early 00s.

I tried The Third Age somewhat recently, and it has aged like milk. Boring maps, low-res-textures, wonky looking meshes, nonsense story, etc. etc. If you have fond memories of these games, but haven't played them since they came out, it's probably better to leave the past untainted by reality.

I would be interested in a rerelease of Battle for Middle-Earth 1 and 2, but maybe I should heed my own warning on those as well.

It's pretty crazy how perceptions work. Back in the day, when I didn't own a PS2, I watched a friend play the beginning of The Two Towers and it did this transition from FMV of the live actors in a grand battle into the actual gameplay and I literally couldn't tell the difference; I was shocked and in awe of what this beastly next generation machine could do. Part of it was comparing it to PS1 / N64 of course, but also there was the softening effect of the CRT and low resolution compared to today's standards. I feel that whenever older 3D games get the modern resolution bump treatment it tends to bring out the simplicity of their models, making the whole package look a bit barren and disjointed compared to the screen-filling perfection it was originally.
