Modest Sales Predicted for Sony's Critically Acclaimed New Fighter 1

Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls isn’t setting cash registers alight if new predictions from Alinea Analytics are to be believed.

The industry observer predicts the licensed superhero fighter sold 485k copies across the PS5 and PC in its first week, amounting for an estimated $33 million revenue. It reckons 74% of the copies were sold on Sony’s home console, with PC making up the remaining 26%.

It should be stressed that these aren’t official numbers, and Alinea’s proprietary methodology remains unknown. Some claim its figures to be roughly reliable, while others point to big misses in its results.

But if accurate, this would represent a modest start for the game overall, although not an outright disaster.

Late review code meant scores only started rolling in earlier this week, with the title currently commanding an impressive 86 on Metacritic, making it one of the higher rated releases of the year.

Moreover, impressions from the fighting game community have been broadly positive, aside from the title’s botched PC launch.

Alinea’s Rhys Elliott hypothesises that the rough state of the release on PC could have cost it massively, with sales potentially closer to one million had it stuck the landing on Steam. I think that’s optimistic, but it’s clear a lot of players bailed once word of the iffy port started to spread.

Dev Arc System Works has been patching the game quickly, but it’ll take a lot of work to restore the release’s reputation on PC.

That said, the core game is excellent so I’m optimistic about what the future holds. As long as Sony continues to support it with new content and timely discounts, I think this could enjoy a long lifespan, so I’m not overly concerned about these soft launch week sales estimates.
