RPGs are bigger than they have ever been, regularly offering over 100 hours of quests and content. The new Fable from Playground Games is doing the opposite: it's staying in line with the length of the original trilogy to offer a more modest playtime.
Speaking to Polygon last week, associate game director Will Kennedy explained Fable has roughly 15-20 hours of main questline gameplay, and then an extra 15-20 hours of "side and open-world exploration content" on top.
The RPG does have some life simulator elements where you can marry townsfolk and buy houses, and if you were to fully immerse yourself in that side of the game, game director Craig Littler reckons you could "literally play it forever if that's what you want to do".

However, in terms of actual story content, it seems you're looking at 15-20 hours to finish the main narrative, and then double that to wrap up all the optional quests.
This sort of length is very much in line with the previous three mainline Fable games. How Long to Beat has Fable 2 and Fable 3 as the longest main quests in the series, but even they are only 13 hours long according to player reports. The titles become much longer when you add in the side content, which is what Playground Games is going for in the 2027 reboot.
Fable is not a Fallout kind of experience where your playtime will reach triple digits, but that might be a good thing when it's launching in close proximity to other big games like God of War Laufey and Persona 4 Revival in February 2027.
Does this sort of playtime for an RPG sound good to you? Let us know in the comments below.

Sounds pretty good, hopefully there's some replayability with it too - different choices and consequences to explore.
This won't include the initial 10 hours you put into chopping wood to slowly build enough gold to buy the town inn either.
Not necessarily a bad thing, a lot of those games that are 100 hours plus are so bloated so as long as the content is good i don't see an issue.
That's a relief. Over the last few days I've been going back and forth on whether or not I'm going to get this because it felt like another enormous game. I was on my way to cancel my pre-order just now when I saw this article.
@LiamCroft X-Box owes you one sale!
Who beelines the story of a RPG anyway? The sidefluff is often where the magic is at
They felt short on Xbox too so I wasn't expecting an epic journey that spanned over the course of a couple of weeks, but I do think pricing should be a factor if they are keeping it short and sweet. Jumping between Modern and Retro is that kind of constant reminder, games were shorted back then and still memorable. I've had Fable Edge of The World (book) queued up for a while now, to listen to with whichever simulator game. It's about seven-hours long, double that for the game's main story sounds about right. The books fill in many of the blanks, there's seven now, Blood Ties being my favorite. They aren't a bad way to catch-up if you never had an Xbox.
Nice! That means it will only take me about 7 weeks to complete it… 🥲
One of the Skyrim devs said he'd completed the main quest of that game in 2h30m. That sounds more like rushing than an actual speedrun - the fastest speedrun is 1h5m glitchess, 19m with glitches.
With WRPGs it's usually the non-main quest stuff that makes up the vast majority of things to do.
I'll definitely be taking my time in this game and it's side content!
Looks like it could be amazing to be honest!
@Matroska My first Skyrim playthrough was six-hundred+ hours, not counting all of the other editions that came after it. I watched my first speedrun of a game this weekend after BotBot recommended trying. I can see why people would do it for the challenge and for an actual leaderboard, but rushing an RPG sounds terrible. I've been walking through Crimson Desert all weekend, talking to everyone, exploring, it feels like natural progression and will probably last weeks.
Fable 1,2 and 3 are quite short games so im not surprised.
Buts is taken them nearly the same amount of time to make fable as the first 3 combined!
Hmmm no new game plus 👀
If the game is good i don't care if it's 200 hours or 20 hours
I never speed run the main story. I usually end up spending 20 hours getting out of the starting zone as I obsessively do everything.
I think it took me that long to reach England in AC Valhalla!
I'll play this on Gamepass via Geforce Now I expect.
Hard to say how it will go. If you watch a gameplay video of DA Veilguard you'd be pretty excited but we know what the reality was like there.
If there isn't a good story, great writing and compelling characters, I'm not motivated to even play 20 hours.
I remember watching preview videos of Hogwarts and being on the fence and really didn't like the look of the combat, yet I ended up playing the hell out of that one.
@GirlVersusGame I kinda disagree with the whole shorter should be cheaper opinion. Just because the main story isn't 100 hours doesn't mean less time, effort or money went into the game. To me it (hopefully) means they just made those 20 hours the best they can be. Obviously Fable is slightly different because I’m sure the side content will exceed that but I’d much rather spend £70 on an Uncharted game over Assassins Creed, which while probably 4x longer isn't as focused. Either way I’m happy to buy Fable full price, just to support the developers!
@Kiefer-Sutherland It's hard not to agree with those point, especially when I heard them in the voice of the man himself. I hope it's 'the best they can' too. I don't play a lot of Xbox games, those were mandatory. I'm all for supporting Developers, I just know people are getting hit harder with pricing everywhere else, I'd rather see prices balance out a little more, but they can't keep the studio lights on with hopes and dreams either.
If I end up liking the game I'll play it multiple times anyway. Also these estimates rarely ever represent my playtime-.-'
Feels really short for the type of game it is. Can work if it's done well but runs the risk of players feeling short changed if any of it doesn't feel upto standard or feels like filler.
I’m presuming the game will be a more modest price then. Perhaps £45-50. Hopefully the trophy challenges provide some additional run time. Will likely get it, but wait for a sale.
if the main story line is just 15-20 hours that is a huge disappointment..
Listen I NEVER complain about these games not being long enough, but 20 hours, AFTER they spent this amount of time in development. All I’m gonna say is playground is lucky they also make Forza Horizon.
@johnedwin normally I’d disagree, but with the amount of time this game has been in development that’s absolutely insane. I was expecting 35-50
For an RPG that is disappointingly short. If it were any other kind of game, I’d be more than okay with that, but even an old-school, lean RPG like Chrono Trigger takes around 25 hours to beat.
20 hours for the campaign is good enough.. never played more than a few minutes of the Fable games as a kid as we were a PlayStation household and only one of my friends had SuXbox..
But I can guaran-GD-tee you I can stretch that mf to a good 50+ hours the way I explore open world RPGs lol
Fable has never been long. The focus is really the main story and even the side quests are almost checkpoints than long side adventures. There isn’t a lot of bloat beyond the time it takes to own all the property (most game that system) and perhaps looking for buried treasure or legendary weapons (much of that was streamlined in Fable 3 because the weapons morphed based on requirements). maybe the demon doors if you want to open all of them (but with morphing gone they may not be as restrictive).
The side quests are more you get to a part of the game that opens that region and you can quickly knock out the quests for that region and move on (with only a few that require you to come back later). At best if you want to make everyone your friend you may have fetch/escort quests but those are optional. As your combat is where the skill points are earned. There are good quests that make changes to a region but to solve them is often simple (paying Barnaby or giving the guard the wanted posters).
The hero is usually on a mission (all Fables are a personal quest that spirals into world threatening status in part because of Theresa manipulating the strings…) so they aren’t spending their time grinding on quests (as the guild is usually in a state where that isn’t how the world works by the time the player character becomes a Hero. )
Fable. Hundreds of millions of pounds worth of development. For what? After watching gameplay, it's a game I've already played many times over the years. It's a symptom of the overall risk-averse malaise with AAA gaming coming out of the West. It very much mirrors the output of Hollywood. And now we're told it's 25 hours long. Hundreds of millions of pounds to develop. We have to put up with £70+ price points to justify the development costs for games like this that are far less interesting to me than games made at a fraction pf the cost.
You know gaming is now a chore for you if you're worried about a game's length before you've even played it. And if you're the world's most busiest person yet want to play so many games quickly instead of using all that time on just one, there are people who want to use that same time on one. And no they don't want to play never ending online games. Short and long games can exist for us all.
Isn't this the type of game where longer play length is a plus? I can't imagine why someone would want to rush through an RPG. But 20hrs is not that unusual, you could straight-line through Skyrim's main quest in a similar amount of time.
@jly1987 20hrs worth of main campaign content plus 20hrs of side content is what is said.
Thats fine with me so many games coming out in february and not all games need too be 100 hours there's plenty of them.
I spent 30h in last of us 2 and begin to feel full. But im now close to end. 30-40h games is enough.
20 hours on internet is my 60 hours on ps. I honestly never understood how someone can finish game like this in that time. I play the way like normal person... arrow for the main quest is north... I will spend 20 hours in south
20 hour main storyline or 20 hours in total/completionist run?
Hopefully the side content is good and there's plenty of it then because 20 hours is pretty short for the type of game it is still hyped for it.
This is on par for the course I think? I played the first 3, they’re a little more Hollywood adjacent action adventure games than full blown WRPGs, which I think is for the better. A little easier for a game to maintain a sense of whimsey without going into menus every attosecond
Sounds like a perfect length, I prefer games that don't overstay their welcome.
Hard Pass for me. I loved the original games, especially Fable 2 but this new game is too "modern audience" for me.
Hope the people that do get it enjoy it though.
@GirlVersusGame crimson desert will last you more than weeks. More like months. I've put it on the back burner for when those long winter months kick in and not because I got bored of it-i love it, but it's a huge undertaking and through out the spring and summer months there is too much golf to be playing and time to spend out doors touching grass with bear and boz. Epic game and one I'm very glad you are enjoying.
@8th_Observer The article says 15-20 main plus another 15-20 side content.
@GirlVersusGame whether it’s 5 hours or 500 hours, this game will start at $70 like every other AAA game.
@jly1987 That's not 20 hours total, it's just 20 hours to beeline the main quest. They then said at least another 20 hours of side quests etc.... and that's all without factoring in proper exploration, or the time you'll spend messing around with the NPC systems, or job systems, or buying houses and businesses.
To be honest it sounds perfect to me, likely 60-70 hours of time in a first 90%ish complete playthrough.
Fable will probably join my wishlist on the PS app and my wishlist for PS Plus-additions.
I still haven't bought a single game brought over from XBOX even though I'd really like to try Pentiment, Starfield, Indiana Jones, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Avowed and the upcoming Fable.
#toomanygames
@For-Kier I don't play Triple-A games all that much and the ones I played on GamePass seemed to cannibalize the industry so I stopped. Indies are my go to, and priced correctly. Studios like Sony have more than enough money to do what they do, smaller studios are where I focus. I'd quit gaming today if all there were available were Triple-A titles. I appreciate that people like them, it's just a preference, so is not seeing people have to pay more to play less.
Haven’t played any Fable game, but if it gets a disc on PS5, which really every $70 game should get a disc, then at this length I can borrow it from the library, finish it in 2 weeks, and return it.
If a company wants me to buy a game for $70 it needs to be longer than I can play in 2 weeks, which is just about 20 hours.
Edit: Clicked on the Buy on Amazon link and it is a disc based game. Well at least it’s a box, I suppose it could just be a code.🤬 And it’s $69.00, just like Wolverine. I guess Amazon decided on selling games for $69.00 instead of $69.99 for marketing purposes. I suppose Bezos can afford the 99c.🤑
I cant wait for this game i adored the original fable games i hope this isnt the last xbox game on ps5 could be though
Perfect, Fable games were never massive but you could spend so much time on them. I’m good with this length.
@Bramble - I’m that guy who will often speed through the mainline of the story and ignore side quests if they don’t add value to the story or are worthwhile quests. It depends on the game, but I mainly do this just because I have limited time to play games.
@rjejr I dont understand this line of thinking. $70 for 20 hours of mainline gameplay plus extras is totally reasonable.
To each their own I guess but the expectation developers need to make 100 hour games in less time, with better fidelity, for less money is what is driving studios out of business.
There has never been a point in video game history where we get more value for our dollar which is the objective truth.
Having never owned an XBOX I've never really had any interest in Fable but this articles title grabbed my attention and I watched the video. A game I can fully explore in 40 hours with management aspects? Sounds perfect for me. Thanks Liam!
@TheDarts Idk, don't buy it? Seems silly to become that upset over it.
Still holding high hopes for this. Fable as a franchise deserved so much more than Xbox has done with it.
Would have liked to see around 30 hours for a modern game but 20 can work depending how they are measuring and also the quality of the side content that will inflate that hour count.
Replaying fable 2 has me really missing the type of game we got back in those days. So much heart and soul.
Sounds good to me! The life sim elements will take up a lot more time anyway.
@11001100110zero idk, dont reply? Seems silly to become upset about thinking someone is upset.
@TheDarts Not upset. Nope. Happy gaming!
@Ajbr8687 I have a library within walking distance of my house. If a game is 20 hours or less I can borrow it and play it for free before having to return it. If it’s longer than 20 hours I’ll pay for it so I don’t have to make the trip twice to renew it, or feel like I have to rush through it in order to return it on time.
But if a game is on sale, I paid 10 cents for a $15 game on Switch yesterday, well I’ll take it.
I also paid $15 for The Witcher 3 complete years ago. 6, 7, 8 I don’t remember, but it wasn’t long after it released. So that’s kind of my baseline. If I wait, it will be on sale, so why pay more?
I do tend to pay more for 1st party Nintendo games. I think 8 year old Switch games might still be $60, so might as well pay the price day 1 b/c it might not get cheaper in my lifetime. So I bought Donkey Kong Banaza for $70. Then like a month later Nintendo sold the rest of the game for an extra $20, so I might just not buy anymore of their games either. 🤑
@11001100110zero me neither! Aren't we a pair! 😁
I'm not complaining 20 hours is a good length for me. But I can't help but wonder since this game has been in development for like 8 years. that's it...?
It’s no fun unless you can spread your oats to as many waiting fields as possible. Of course you can do the opposite and put an end to the NPCs existence and be an evil little cretin. It’s fable after all.
I’m an “every nook and cranny” type of RPG player. 20 hours usually means 60 for me. And I’m ready for it!
Have to say, it’s a bit disappointing. Wish it were around 50-60
must admit a bit disappointing that the main story is so short. I would have liked to have seen a longer storyline, but hopefully the off storyline bits can keep the gameplay fresh and fun
Perfect length
