Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4's PS5 Beta Includes Campaign Mission for the First Time

Good marketing. This'll get fans engaged with the tone and setting.

Incidentally, I haven't yet self-aggrandized for acutely predicting a gritty, down-to-Earth CoD from IW this year to 'course correct' after last year's big man drama. Hopefully next time there's an entry people think is tonally off, they don't bemoan about how much better s*** entry Advanced Warfare was and just wait another year for the next one. Lord knows you don't have to buy every CoD every year if a particular one doesn't sell you.

Been really disappointed in the last load of COD games. So will just be trying the open beta for this one. If it's good then I'll pre-order. Hopefully it's good as they've had 2 years to work on it.

I've always thought, why don't have different versions of CoD, and what mean by that is have a version that is just mulitplayer-only or champaign only and th current version we have now, I think a lot of people would opt for a MP only version.

I just want DMZ back.

@Oram77 because they'd have to sell them cheaper - whereas people interested in Campaign, Zombies (or whatever co-op crap they have) and/or Multiplayer have to purchase the full thing to play their favourite part.

It's a shame the campaigns have been dreadful the past few years making them worthless in the package - Zombies and Multi being good/ok consistently at minimum carries the load with Warzone being free anyway.

@Jacko11 Yeah that't where my thought process came from because the campaigns have been awful for a long time, and they know most people don't care from them anymore...

People will hate but CoD consistently delivers great games.

@JoDoMac I agree that they deliver consistently high selling titles but I wouldn't say all of them are great. There are plenty that are but there are a few which are also mediocre.

Pet hate is the whole ‘North Korea invasion’ nonsense, it’s just patently ridiculous. There is absolutely zero way that North Korea will attempt a full scale invasion because their entire existence relies on the current stalemate and certain powers’ tolerance of them behaving themselves. This feels more like a way to grab the South Korean multiplayer crowd.

@Oram77 Honestly that would probably just overtime lead Activision to stop making COD games without campaigns with a full 70$ price tag.

Call of duty is one hell of a drug. People just cannot resit to buy it every year.

Really looking forward to it, should be some good fun with the mates! I’ll be there for the Beta play through for a little spicey shooty shooty bang bang action.

I mean Black Ops 7 is the definition of trash. so i guess skys the limit.

Already pre-ordered it but TBH, I have zero interest in playing a mission from the campaign until I can play it all at once. I’d just prefer to play it all in context. Plus, considering you can plow through a COD campaign fairly quickly I want to savor the experience when the game comes out. Besides, I primarily play COD for the MP. It’s the only game I buy that I literally play every day for a little while until the next game comes out.

So, i’ve quit playing cod years ago and can’t keep track of what they’ve released, is this a brand new game or is it a remake of one that already exist?

@OmegaStriver This is a completely new game in the current Modern Warfare timeline which is different from the legacy Modern Warfare timeline but confusingly has some of the same characters (Price, Makarov, Ghost, Shepherd) as well some new characters unique to this timeline.

@nessisonett I'd find it easier to call Call of Duty propaganda had I not visited the DPRK, they do it too and it's not at all subtle. We certainly do too, these adverts we have on TV now, for men to enlist, they look like Call of Duty trailers, really big budget efforts with great music. In many ways video-games are used to sell conflict to young people, it works. Once they have an enemy and are told, go.

Those troops might not go boots on the ground in South Korea but they are with us on another frontline, I see them mentioned all of the time on State TV, our as they say Allies. We have now statues and memorials to those troops. When I saw that trailer it was on this site, there was live-chat etc and I knew within seconds that it was a here comes North Korea type game, I just didn't know it was Call of Duty. I thought a new Homefront game.

I think the movie Red Dawn was good fun, I expected that game would be too, I blinked and it was over, if there was a game there I missed it. I did really like the first Modern Warfare game, especially the Pripyat level. I think I played the second one too. Now apparently there are zombies/etc, kind of weird but someone surely wants it.

They didn't talk much about the DPRK when I was in the South either and when we were on the Chinese side of their border it was full of North Korean business and restaurants. I was told they were crossing for work, and very common. They kept to themselves.

They didn't seem to care about conflict, just wanted to provide for their families. It's hard to word but there's a distinct divide between soldiers and people, I'm not a soldier but my people are engaged in active combat. Those North Koreans aren't soldiers either but right as I'm typing this their military are preparing for another mobilization, alongside ours. Call of Duty is the last franchise I'd expect to ever make such a distinction, or to get it right. They need an enemy, I'm just glad it's not me. Perhaps it already has been, I don't follow the game, I know we almost banned it at one point, but we ban many things. Some of the games never released on discs but were available digitally, I never looked into why.

For a time purchasing the game Stalker got people years in prison, in the DPRK they'd probably unalive you for playing this new Call of Duty. Perhaps there will be blowback, there was when their Guardians of Peace Hacker Group hit Sony after their portrayal of Kim Jong Un for The Interview. They spent months on that operation, then used an advanced wiper on Sony's servers, they took 100TB of data too. They took everything from employee social security numbers to unreleased movies, then started to leak it all. I wouldn't be surprised if this game inspires a similar response. This is also why that Spiderman license is now shared, all of those Marvel emails were leaked too. I think they even threatened to blow-up the theater that was hosting the premiere. The Feds had to be brought in for Sony to screen that movie safely. Either way I liked the movie.

@GirlVersusGame In the first Modern Warfare reboot they took war crimes committed by the Americans and said the Russians did it. They’re not the brightest writers on the planet.

@nessisonett Well hopefully they aren't targeted for their involvement with the game, the same for the PSN/Sony's servers. I don't think a game should cause a massive international incident but that one movie did. I don't want to see innocent gamers caught in that crossfire. It really depends on how they spin the story and if they offend the Kim dynasty. No company is bulletproof, nor is any server or service, I suppose time will tell. Even if they replace him that could spark up tensions, they take all of that very seriously.

I mainly talked to children over there, I was a teenager myself and their views on the West were pretty intense, I was given some anti-Western sentiments too but moved passed it, they aren't given that opportunity. Not that Call of Duty will make much difference to their lives, what I saw were localized machines running games I'd never even heard of, the rest were Chinese knock-offs, I regret not buying one of those machines and sticking it in a diplomatic bag. I've done that with weirder things. I took very little back out of there with me, some flags, drawings some of the children did for me, no games/movies or music.

They do have all of those things, it's all carefully selected, there were mobile games too but I've never played one so I don't know if they were legitimate versions or their own. It's just a really strange place, I'd say people need to see it for themselves but that really didn't go well for Otto Warmbier. I probably will go back, I'd love to see those children again. They'd be older, I'd like to see if their views changed but they were children of State Officials so it's very doubtful, I do think about them every now and then. Especially when my own country started to close it's borders and isolate it's people. Then of course seeing North Korean troops in Moscow, that definitely brought it all back. The last parade we had, I saw them there too, it was surreal. I'd been to every Victory Day parade since I was a child and I never expected to see that.

@Mes_Urson No, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is not a remake of the first game Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007). Instead, it is an entirely new installment and a direct narrative sequel to 2023's Modern Warfare III, continuing the storyline within the rebooted timeline.
